Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@thefatcontroller, I know. But I'm only here for a week so I'm impatient. Gone back to bed as bar and reception is full of grumpy people Laughing

@maggi, I imagine the Spa at 1950 is probably getting a few booking today... but always worth having a go (and the view out of the treatment room windows must be quite special too).

Just seen quite a few people skiing from 2000 to 1950 and that mega slow lift from below 1950 is running with at least one person on it. Conditions are still a bit grim

@jtr, Assume this is Pre Saint esprit chair. In these conditions that would be 15 minutes of sheer hell. Lift website saying it is shut?

Correct about chair and agree it would be a survival exercise. It now has stopped so maybe that one person was a liftie or someone being subjected to a cruel and unusual punishment

Headed out first thing but feeling a bit poorly today so bailed after a couple of hours. Fewer lifts open today compared to yesterday (Vagere, Grizzly, Derby due to open, but not yet) so only the lower pistes currently skiable. Had a couple of laps around TransArc 1 and was thinking about heading towards 1600 to play around Cachette and Rouelles, but a distinct lack of energy this morning means that will have to wait. Pistes in great condition and boot-deep and maybe deeper fresh snow to the sides.

Maybe 30cm of fresh snow overnight at resort level, more at mid-altitudes and sounds a bit chaotic up top. But nice to see the resort looking like it should in mid-winter Happy

Waiting for first lift to open

Plenty of fresh snow, even relatively low down (this about 2000m)

Despite the conditions, plenty of great skiing being enjoyed

Heading home

Powder to the door!

So it looks like people are skiing from 2000 to 1950 and getting the Cabriolet back up. The queue for it st 1950 is huge

So, assuming conditions allow.

What's the crack with this speed flying, and any specific schools/instructors/guides in particular for Touring from 1950/2000?

Good lord, what weather we have seen today. Eventually once released from 2000 we went and did Marmottoes, wind was still up and decided after nearly freezing on the Marmottes chair to head down to the bottom of Pre Saint and take the bus to 1600. The buses had chains on today, hadn't seen that before. Arrived in 1600 about 1pm to a huge blizzard. Horrendous, so bad we went straight into the Arpette and had food. After food headed down to 1800 with plan to take 1/2 way Transarc and go to Peisey. However when we got of 1/2 way it was sunshine, yet Vagere to our left was shrouded in cloud and snow. We abandoned Peisey as it looked like everyone was going there and went back to 1800 . By the time we got to 1800 Vagere was clear. Up that and back to 1800. Snow was amazzzzing. We wanted to head back to 1600 so planned to go up Vagere but that had a huge queue. Went up Transarc to 1/2 way and took the new blue from there to 1600. Challenging on boards, very flat in parts but was still fun. By the time we got to 1600 it was snowing heavy again. Got back to 2000 to find it still snowing very heavy and wind was up. I do hope the wind drops a bit as the lifts linking the area could so do with opening up. All in all good day but need this fecking wind to drop. Photos below from morning onwards......

I'm just worried that the long range charts show temps going above 5 degrees again around the 22nd, unless I'm a complete idiot and misinterpreted (which is very likely). I'm out on the 30th.

@thefatcontroller, down here too. If anything, colder, windier and snowier than last night. I'm beginning to think about my plans for getting to GVA on Thursday; it will need careful timing to ensure I can get my car out of my garage if the snow is like this on travel day.

WHAT A DAY!! It was another crazy powder day in the trees and meadows today!

Started early as the rush was on to get the first tracks everywhere! Never seen so many fat skis in the Funi in the morning as today!

Started from Arc 1600 and had a quick blast back down the side of the race course in knee deep powder before heading over to Arc 1800. Windy up top of the Cachette and the pistes down to the Vagere in Arc 1800 were covered in powder or wind blown!

The Mont Blanc, Arpette, Carreley, Vagere, Grizzly and Derby chairs were all closed at the start of the morning on the Arc 1600/1800/Peisey Vallandry side and as reported already. Nothing open on the Arc 2000/1950 side with roads also blocked coming up from Bourg and going round to Arc 2000 side. What a start to the day.

Headed up the Transarc to the mid station and then had some great lines back down. See photos!

Then through the forest to skiers left of the Transarc, but as the Derby was closed and there were queues at the bottom of Vallandry, headed back up the Vagere as it had just opened.

The Mont Blanc, Arpette, Carreley and Derby chairs did not open today. At least from what I could see. Not sure about the Grizzly.

More really nice powder, getting deeper all the time from the top of the Vagere and after quite a few laps of the lift it was time for lunch.

After lunch with a few people dropping out, it was into my playground and powder cushions all the way down! Really fun! Take a look at the photos!

Steeper and Deeper all the time! The day just got better and better!

Finally with tired legs it was time to head for home through the forest!

Quite a day and more to come tomorrow. It was still snowing as we skied down on our last route.

The pistes everywhere we went today were in great condition. With more snow coming, they can only get better and better! If you are coming out next weekend you are in for an amazing week.

The roads tonight are bad, but open. Arc 1950/2000 opened after lunch, but may well be shut again tonight if the snow keeps falling. You MUST have chains to get into the stations, but it is still OK down in the valley although they have forecast snow to the valley floor by tomorrow.

Photos for today have been published on the Les Arcs Winter page in the January 2016 album. Enjoy!

https://www.facebook.com/LesArcsWinter/

If anyone wants to come out and join us playing in the powder, please send me a PM to get the meeting point and time details. We plan to be out everyday while the powder lasts. Due to the weather we need to be very flexible.

@rob@rar, I understand your worry for getting home, but I hope it keeps on snowing for at least another couple of days! Very Happy Hope you are feeling better and able to come and join us tomorrow. Should be an even better day than today! Smile

Can't you start digging a tunnel Maggi like the Great Escape? Looks like lunch will be at the end of the week. Meet Genepi at the Mojo in bar this evening which was great. Conditions in Vallandary and 1800 have been great today, Limited runs open but enough to keep me occupied.

Which Finnish resort. It'd be good to hear how you got on?

There's something about both the Scandinavian and Finnish ski options that hugely appeals to me. I'm quite happy to be at a small resort if it's in a proper winter/arctic country.

@Piemonster, Ruka. We're running an Inside Out Skiing trip there for the first time. Small resort, but a good range of terrain from a teaching point of view, and lots of other stuff do do like ice karting, husky dogs, snowmobiles, etc. Looking forward to it.
