@leggyblonde, it's still feckin dangerous to even contemplate chancing some of the remaining stashes that are there to be had with a bit of hiking (take a look in the 2015 / 2016 Avy thread in the off piste section and pics from La Grave yesterday).
That said I have not been up on the lifts for three or so days.
I'm now hoping that the warm temps of next week will provide some spring snow conditions stabilising things better.
But just when I think about doing a few lines I see photos that show just what can come down.
Good idea to ski as I think pistes will be great next week.
@enda1, will you be wanting bar / restaurant info ?

@Weathercam, Thanks, I suspected that might be the case having seen some of your other posts. I will make the most of learning from the UCPA guides for the first few days I think, and then get some skinny planks
Thanks again for your updates and info!

We bought our ski passes on the early bird offer through the resort as a pack with the chalet. Their will also be a voucher to pick up for the gear rental. Anyone know anything about this? Are there a choice of rental shops and if so, anyone a recommendation?
Many thanks again for any help you all can offer!

@enda1, ok, so it will probably depend on who they are using this season, and on where your accommodation is located. They will probaby be able to advise which ski shop it will be. I doubt you will just be able to walk into any of them with a voucher, it will probably be a specific shop. I have been known to be wrong though

@Weathercam, yeah we'd love some insider info.
Good places for happy hour/later in the evening.
We'll probably mix cooking in and eating out in the evenings so a couple of choice places would be wonderful! Thanks.

In no particular order.
Vielle Ferme (Swedish hotel) they do a glorious Rotisserie a couple of nights a week, tis very special. Go into the hotel for a drink in their bar (really good hassle free Wifi) and ask what nights they are doing, also ask when the UCPA party night is (can be Tues or Wed), all the Swedes come over to the Vielle Ferme for a thrash. Ask for Magnus the General Manager and you can mention my name Gavin.
Just down from Vielle Ferme in the old village, Mojo run by Brits Met and Tim - great bar and food and happy hours. We tend to go down on a Friday around 18:30.
Down from Mojo on the left by the bridge, Petite Pont very nice French restaurant run by my bros ex's daughter (!), does two sittings so go for the late one.
Check out the Frog restaurant and bar, will be doing a Burns night this Sunday as Dee is Scottish meant to be an Celtic band playing.
Then in the modern commercial center next door to the Sherpa, the Coccoon run by Eric and Crystal and upstairs Bar 1420
In the old Le Bez village, Cavaillou restaurant, great pizzas, steak lamb and just along from there Maison du Bez where you can have a drink, run by Tina and eat.
Also in the old village, the little Blue House, La Marotte very very good, the dude there runs Pi Mai at lunch time.
There are also a whole load of other restaurants. And special mention to the Chazelet by the Frejus and Casse du Boeuf lifts, it's the closest they come to a Follies in Serre - music at 17:00 every Thursday.
And then of course there are the party nights in the Grotte, but I'm way too old!!

Gämsbock, scski and I will be training in Monetier next week. That means Matwall will be looking for company in the mornings while we're busy, if anyone's up for some piste cruising? He's a decent red/black run skier.

I was definitely not dialed in it seemed and found it quite hard work, not helped by the dogs who kept stopping and hanging back 50ms.

As a coach said to me. Everyone takes at least a few lessons to downhill ski but thinks they can actually just pick up cross country skiing but in fact, technically, it is more difficult. Well, now I know a little more, I think I agree with him.

lift pass question...on the website it says "id photo required for all passes over 3 days"...does that simply mean we have to show passports or is it like the old passes that required a photo to go onto the pass ?

@backhojo, no worries, they have digicam technology when you turn up to buy a pass.

@backhojo, = Stieg Larsson. Don't go skiing with @Weathercam, your photo will be everywhere and your cover blown.
Is the decision now final? Serre Che just pipped the Trois Vallees? Phew.
Looking forward to the trip report and the mileage stats.

I'd never skied that piste until this morning, over 1100 meters vertical with a fantastic run top to bottom and empty to boot!

Yes it's very nice up there both the old streets and the walls. Also the gardens below and the other fortifications around the town which have walks. Strange as it's a completely different world to the not very exciting new town by the lift and train station.

I can vouch for Petite Pont doing a good meal. Ate there on Wednesday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The duck tartiflette and tarte tatin were delicious!
Last day today, warm in the sun but windy up high. Runs that are in the sun holding up well and are mostly nice and soft. Those in the shade a bit icy in places.
Overall a pretty enjoyable week, looking forward to my next visit already.

Duck tartiflette? Sounds interesting. How does it work? Do you just replace the lardons with duck?

The runs down to Briancon have always been really slushy near the bottom when I've been there. Loved the runs from the top to Prorel 1 though, empty and wide tree-lined reds are very much my sort of thing. Similar to Monetier in many ways, or the reds of the Aiguillette. That lot are enough to keep me wanting to come back to Serre Che on their own, though the groups I go with always want to try a new resort each year.
Lovely photos as always Weathercam.

I've been to Serre Chevalier 3 times now and looked at Briancon from the Prorel slopes a number of times but have never been into the town.
This time we're actually staying at that end (just outside Briancon) so I'm sure we'll go and have a look. In fact we'll probably be heading into Briancon for a meal on chalet night off if anyone has any recommendations.

@Higs, where are you staying (next to Aldi ?) - worth a hike if possible just above the old town to Mama Mia, or the guys can give you a lift, just like being in Italy, one of our favourites........

I think so. We're staying at Chalet Larre with SnowedInn. I think I remember Aldi from the directions. We are a group of four families so I'm not sure if we'll go out as one big gang (15 of us) or each family doing their own thing but I like the sound of a good Italian restaurant.
Talking of which... I understand we can take a day in Montgenevre on our pass. Anyone know if it covers Claviere as well? If it does we may well head over to Kilt for pizza.

Oh yes! Inspired idea - I guess you just shred some confit duck in instead of the lardons.

@Higs, I can second Mamma Mia, great pizza and other Italian dishes, reasonable too! It's opposite the big car park at the top of the old town, so you can take a walk there at the same time!
