@stanton, nothing I can see suggests temperatures are going to get as cold as -20C or - 30C? Where did you see that?

Heavy snow forecast for Sat night, Mon am and Thursday night from the snow reports I have seen this evening. Night temperatures circa -9 at altitude. Not seen any -20 etc.

@nozawaonsen,
Many locals i know are/have written this season off . No major dump in sight. Easter is early. Basically it looks to be be a manmade snow season With little or no off piste ..

Folks. Large snowfall is not expected. A few cms each day but the region needs a good 1 metre dump at resort level to save the season.
This is the Official local Forecast & its normally 99.9% correct
For the moment only weak extensions of Atlantic low-pressure areas will result in changeable and repeatedly rather unsettled weather conditions. The temperatures will be just moderately cool, consequently the snow line will further range between a level of 1500 and 1000 meters. The sun will be a rare guest throughout the upcoming days, thick clouds will prevail time and time again. Larger amounts of precipitation are still not expected, though significantly wintrier weather conditions are forecast.

I think it's possible to be 99.9% certain that there won't be a 1m dump at resort level over the next few days... Short term weather forecasts are pretty good in St Anton if you don't expect too much precision (far better than in Chamonix, but that's a whole other story). Predicting snow depths is utterly pointless anyway.

I think it was the cows predicting that. Or was it the sheep?
Anyway, "writing the season off" is a bit much. I agree that people may be put off, some may not bother to ski and might even cancel based on a poor start. Bookings may be down so locals will be writing off profits perhaps (and since they only have 3 months or so left to make the bulk of their annual income the are right to be worried), but from the point of view of a skier it's far from a write off. It doesn't need 1m at resort level for skiing in Jan and Feb. The end of the season could be very thin without the good base, but St Anton doesn't need 1m at the village to have good skiing during the main part of the season.
To put a cynical point of view, if it is a poor season in terms of business maybe there'll be some bargains int he shops, I might get around to buying those Bonafides after all

@kitenski, The official local forecast is reliable.
@nozawaonsen, appologies, still blurry this morinng.
"Writing the season off"
Locals I spoke to were obviously praying for the temperature to drop & snow but all said the same thing , this is the worst start to the season any of them could remember & because Easter is so early the "business season" is now reduced to when the BIG snow arrives & March 27th.
The New Year Week is tradionally the busiest & lucrative of the season & all accomodations are normally FULL. This was not the case last week. Many pensions , hotels etc were vacant. The resort was very quiet last week compared to previous seasons, this could also be to be with the bad start last season & many people not wanting to be burnt finacially twice in a row. Many Germans,Dutch,Scandinavains stayed at home & i must say I did not hear so many British or Irish apart from the regulars.
Pray for Snow Then Pray for POW !

These maps are for Tyrol, which is suffering Inneralpine effects (mountains blocking snow/rain) due to, well, the Arlberg Massif....
Its a well know fact that Vorarlberg (including Arlberg-West up till the line Valluga-St.Christoph gets much more snow (from West) than St.Anton-valley and all of West-Tyrol.)

This westerly weather looks like good news for the French resorts and Western CH. It doesn't look super cold though, so maybe only the high altitude resorts will reap the benefit. Here's hoping for a Nordstau very soon!

Just nearly missed my plane back because of skiing too long this morning. On piste conditions are much improved compared to a week ago, theyve been running the cannons like crazy for the past couple of days and combined with a small snowfall midweek it has meant that what is open is actually very pleasant. Some slopes (e.g. Rendl home run) look very nearly ready to open. Off piste is still not really there at all, maybe some higher stuff will be ok if it snows a bit this week. Went for a short tour above zurs which yielded some good sections and some very rough sections of descent. If you're looking for a bit more piste mileage ischgl is around 40 mins by car and had generally better conditions when we went over there, again almost entirely piste. Basically, what's there is now good fun but they need to luck out a bit over the next couple of weeks for the longer off piste itineraries. Hope it comes through!!

I came across plenty of visitors from Holland/Germany/Scandinavia/UK last week, and was busy enough with traffic queuing to pay the toll to get through the tunnel today, so much so the Pettneu bus serving the Wellness park was running in the opposite direction to normal (St A, Wellness Park, Bahnhofstrasse, Steinig, St A instead of the other way round). May not be as busy as normal, but it certainly isn't dead...

I think the local complaints are also due to the unfavourable dates of this Christmas/New Years period, with Christmas and New Years close to the weekends, leaving the first week (19-26 dec, Germans/Austrians staying home traditionally for Christmas) very empty, and thus just a full week very busy.
And about the snow this coming week; combining ZAMG (15 cm this coming night!) and Meteoblue (2-15 cm snow every day this week) it should very well make about 50 cm total until next Saturday.

@Sitter,
You only have to look at the Nasserein Car Park. It was relatively empty & Zero Sk Buses
from Germany.
Last week may of seemed busy to some folk but it really was quiet. I would estimate (imo) minimum 50% down on visitors.

Eh, was full every time I went past (with the exception of getting the 6:25am bus back to Pettneu after leaving NYE party). No busses tho (couple there today).

stanton makes a fair point - it's a bad year date-wise for ski resorts and this poor start only compounds the problem.
Many business will be highly geared - especially those at the margin. They've borrowed shed loads of money to buy into the resort/area and really need to see that cash coming in every hour of every day of what is only really a 3-month season this year.

Well I've no previous experience to go on but I found St.Anton busy on the pistes at times but very rarely queued more than a minute or so for a lift (Lech was worse for that the day we went there). We certainly spent much less time queuing than we did in La Plagne the same week last year.
Overall we had a good week, both on the piste and with a fun crowd of strangers (initially) in the chalet. The skiing wasn't 'awesome' but everyone seemed to enjoy it and gave the resort credit for what they did manage to open given the lack of natural snow. There wasn't one person out of around 35 that left unhappy.
Personally, I spent most of my time skiing with my wife and 8yr old son. On the last day I thought he'd progressed well enough that I took him down 3 black runs. Run 25 twice (not convinced that was really black despite the piste markings) and 2 once (that did feel like a proper black). He picked his way down them slowly and confidently and ended the week one very happy boy. Not bad going either after just a week of lessons last year, a few days out in poor conditions in Scotland and then skiing with me this trip (he steadfastly rejected the offer of lessons). Won't be long before it'll be me trying to keep up.

I remember doing an off piste course with the Deutsche Alpenverein in Jan 1988 when we had only 50cm on the Arlberg ( stayed at the Ulmer Hütte for a week ). Excellent course, and it turns out that 50cm was just fine... So it seems that the season is not completely lost!

I wasn't saying the resort was very busy, yes it's not what it's been in previous years, but it's no way near as deserted as you are making it out to be. Bars I have been in have been full, the slopes are crowded, people queuing for the lifts (lot of people trying to get up Kapall this morning) and car parks full.

@Ravelin, black 25, as it currently is, is not the usual black 25 as shown on the piste map. It is blue 24 for most of the way down, and then red something or other from below Rodelalm to the Nasserein button lift. They just have it as a black at the moment due to conditions.

That is what I mean & it was easy to make a reservation for a Dinner & get into a bar without queuing or having a ticket. I know pensions down valley in St Jakob, Pettneu & Flirsch that had no reservations last week.
Hopefully things will pick up soon
