Some great skiing right now in Austria. |
Indeed. Skied Grossarl today and it was incredible. Packed powder on piste. Sunny but cold so the snow never got heavy. Never seen conditions this good so late.

Parts of Austria due to get 100-200cm fresh snowfall in the next 10 days.
Norway also getting battered with 2-3ft of snow in the next several days.
Mammoth in California still has 30ft of snow up top and will be open until July.

Lovely and sunny in Ischgl today. Snow in terrific condition. Little warmer than last few days (though still cold for time of year). Snow coming mid week.

Listening to church service being piped through the speakers in Schwarzwand. Rather relaxing...
Anyway bit of fresh snow over night (few cms). Strong wind. Cold and sunny. Some of the best snow I've skiied in last seven months. At end of April! Another metre to come next week with the snow line falling below 800m.

I was in Ischgl the week before you, was 24 degrees in the valley as we drove up and the snow was still good. I can quite imagine how good it must be at the moment!! Very lucky, although I think from memory and my Easter trips most places see good snow fall some time in April, you just have to hope that combines with a trip!

Mmmmm decisions decisions this week is looking like a real return to winter, just look at those FL's - this forecast is for La Grave and Les Deux Alpes is similar.
Down here in Serrre over the Lautaret from La Grave we still have snow forecast but not to the same levels.
However as lifts are closed now it's all about earning your turns and access to where to ski, so high altitude roads (Col du Lautaret) and or long walks up.
Viz could well be an issue as low down in the trees there is no snow so that option is ruled out more or less.
Going to be an interesting week indeed!

Saturday (particularly in the morning before it warms up) looks like it will be a great powder day across many parts of the Alps. Cold with lots of snow this week until Friday, 5-10C below seasonal average, then the sun will come out on Saturday.

The forecasted cold temps are currently not materialising so all that lovely snow will melt fast and turn to sludge / concrete off piste - need a couple of days of freeze / melt to transform.
We're just back from the Col du Lautaret and it's slide city with any new snow falling off the hot rock faces (even on N facing slopes) and propagating big slides, we heard some big ones in the cloud as well as could see activity once the clouds cleared.

Cold temps are supposed to be around Thursday morning - Saturday morning, coldest on Friday. Freezing level is still pretty high today (further North in the Alps is colder already)

@musehead, it keeps changing, look at that forecast I posted further up the page.
And @davidof, thought you of all people would not be bothered by the small fact of lifts being shut and looking forward to putting skins on

This is the nicest time of the year to read this thread too - quiet, no-one fretting about whether their trip is going to get fresh snow, no one making absurd demands for predictions of conditions in four weeks time, no bickering. Just people calmly observing the world around them and being happy with what it gives them, which can be surprisingly good at unexpected times! Its like going to your local for a quiet pint and finding just the regulars there at last, after a few months of crowds being in for some concert / football match / festival nearby ruining your pint.
Having said all that fcuk any of you lucky enough to be out there still enjoying those conditions!

Flew back from Oakland to Seattle last week. Cascade range was nice and white. Lots of snow on the mtn. tops. Good for the rafting season. And of course the water table.

Swung through Grenoble and Chamrousse, France, the past couple days.
Ridiculously hot for the time of year.
Locals saying it will be the hottest June ever and the glaciers are getting totally battered once again this year.
