Just back from Wagrain/St Johann im Pongau where we had some magical runs in knee deep powder on the pistes. Very cold, -14°c without wind-chill and a fierce NNE wind whipping across any exposed ridges. More snow coming in tonight and tomorrow according to the forecasts. It is already snowing heavily in northern Bavaria and 15 to 20 cms of new snow are forecast for the north side (i.e Bavarian Alps) in the next 24 hours.
Temperatures are due to stay low for the next few days with more snow coming in Monday/Tuesday, but no-one is saying how much - could be a light sugaring could be a mega dump. just a case of wait and see.
Magical days of spring skiing coming up folks!

Samerberg Sue, Avi report aimed at tourers, well aren't they the most interested in knowing the avi info as there the ones most at risk? Just knowing the avi level is at whatever is one small item of data it takes to make informed decisions.
Skied Zauchansee today, snowing steady most the morning then very hard later afternoon, as it was in Altenmarkt and Radstadt but back in schladming not a flake since this morning by the looks of it. Plenty of powder at Zauchansee and getting a very good top up.

Just flown back from a week in Saalbach.
Beginning of the week was very warm, 13 degrees when we landed in Salzberg! Early morning snow was okay but by lunch many of the pistes were extremely soft and not much fun at all. Quite a few bits of piste were closed and there were more than a few brown patches and grassy areas peeping through open ones, even up high.
However, it started snowing on Thursday night and was still snowing this morning when I left, 36 hours later, with no sign of letting up. Much colder now. They should be able to reopen the previously closed pistes after this dump I think. Fabulous snow yesterday all over...powder well over the knees in some places...pity it was our last day but better late than never!

waynos, I got the impression from the broadcast and also from friends in the Bergwacht that there "seem" to be more and more people with all the gear but not much training or knowledge maybe. I think the programme on BR was aimed at them rather than more serious and experienced tourers. In the Bavarian section of the Alps, it does seem that snowboarders and tourers are disproportionately involved in incidents - as to the whys and wherefors of the individual cases, it could just be "Schicksal"! The DAV has some excellent courses for tourers at all levels from absolute novices to challenging experienced people. Maybe they are also trying to drum up trade for those course.
Still snowing very heavily here - only just made it up the mountain to my village this afternoon. More of the same forecast for us for tomorrow!

Just got back from Kitzbuhel - an interesting mix of weather over the week...
Started off with beautiful clear skies but little fresh snow and melting pistes by the mid-afternoon... was ok but not brilliantly.
Then there was a couple of days of colder weather but with little new snow except for on the tops... in this the piste started to get a little icy in places for the tastes of a noob like me.
Then Thursday was fog-bound... made for an extremely interesting afternoon following our instructor off the mountain with almost no visibility of the mountain at all.
Then Friday temp dropped considerably (~-15 on the tops) and some bleak windy bits but the visibility was actually better despite a reasonable snowfall. This seemed to be carrying into Saturday and Salzburg airport was getting a fair dump as we flew out this afternoon so I assume the resort would be getting the same or more.
Our instructor reckoned they'd be fine with the amount of snow already up on the tops to the end of the season if necessary, so any worries about kitzbuhel being a low resort seem pretty unfounded to me.
NB: All comments made are those of someone who'd never been to the alps before this week just gone so what would I know!

BigSoy,
Trust me however much your ski instructor reckoned, Kitz is only 2000m and does not have as good a snow record as many other Austrian ski resorts. That area has however done well for snow this year but that doesn't mean it will always be like that. The end of the season generally means Easter and Easter is a week earlier this year (April 04). Next year Easter is very late (April 24) so Kitz may struggle.

DB, point taken - I do think at times its easy to exaggerate how "low" places are though... 2000m is still pretty high and it must be fairly rare to have no snow there in winter?
To be fair, my instructor was a local from Kitzbuhel so I'd trust his view slightly more than Dave from inverness doing a season or whatever...

Rowlski, the only problem that would cause me to cancel a trip to Serfaus is the kind that has buried in a pine box 6 feet under!

Carinthia / Kärnten* has seen a large dump (e.g. Nassfeld 60 cm fresh) and it's still snowing - some places are expected to see over 1m.

Frustrated here in Schladming. Keep forecasting big snowfall but so far just cloud with maybe some light snowfall higher up. Seems as if the weather is not coming this far north. More snow forecast for the weekend early next week, though i've little faith in the forecast. The conditions are still pretty good, piste are fine, was in Zauchansee this morning and the off piste was pretty good with a nice layer of wind blown powder (was very windy yesterday).

Was up in Wagrain today, beautiful snow, hard and compact, and right at the top on the Muldenlift, lots of wind blown powder as Waynos said. Very quiet all day.

Just back from a week in Koenigsleiten in the Zillertal Arena which is linked with Gerlos and Zell Am Ziller. Heavy snow on arrival on Sat 6th, got stuck for a while in the heavy traffic and snow/low vis on the A8 from Munich but as soon as we crossed into Austria the roads were pretty cleared. Just made it into KL without chains and didn't touch the car for a week!
Had lovely snow all week. Freshies on the morning of Sunday 7th were the best start to the hol, and then about 3 significant top-ups during the week, mostly at night, with mostly clear days. Early part of the week was icy cold with the wind being somewhat unpleasant. Milder towards the end of the week but still new snow flurries. A bit of snow early yesterday on the road back to Munich.
All in all, pretty muh perfect snow all week, making the traffic on arrival day worthwhile!

I was in Ischgl yesterday (Saturday), perfect conditions, very cold for March. Brilliant sunshine all day which was a suprise compared to Munich conditions. Snow was great even on the skiout runs.
I realised Ischgl is great first thing in the morning. We headed straight for the Swiss side and were almost alone until the weekenders woke up. Seems the party atmosphere means a lot of people do late starts in the morning.

Just back from a weekend in St Johann/Alpendorf in the Sportwelt Amadé area. I had a beginner and a late returner skiing with me so we did not venture too far. Snow was in excellent condition just about everywhere and the slopes relatively empty - especially yesterday. It looked pretty threatening weatherwise on the drive over both days, but we had light snow, sunshine and a bitingly cold wind. In a sheltered position the sun was quite warm.
Snow lower down was very soft but the base seems to be holding up well. I'm there for a week of unashamed luxury as of next Saturday, so I just hope it continues to be as good!
DAB, fancy meeting up sometime between 20th and 27th? I'm based at the Berghof in Alpendorf for the week.

What a bloody great day! Out on the lift just after 9, finished at 4:30, with a 30min coffee stop, pretty tired now. Was snowing heavy this morning, until late morning when the sun popped out, but a couple of hours later it was dumping it down again. Skied Planai (schladming), was endless untracked powder off piste, hardly saw another person. In the morning, and even late afternoon, there was powder on piste. Was mainly keeping in the trees higher up, was a good 30cm of fresh powder. Was quite windy but was plenty of sheltered areas. Got to love this area, today I stayed on just one mountain that I know well and there's so much good off piste to be had. Forecast to snow more tonight and tuesday but then a warming trend, hopefully not too warm that all this new snow gets mushed up. Will try and post a couple of pics later.
flangesax, where were you?
