Hi. Looks like snow conditions are currently excellent. Any advice on road conditions? I'm picking up a hire car from GVA on Sunday and driving up to the Haut Tovieres in Lavrachet for a Snowworks course. I presume I'll need chains or is the road kept clear? Obviously, chains will be necessary if it's still snowing, but how long afterwards generally before it's clear enough to (be allowed to) do without?

DCG, the road is cleared of snow very efficiently by the resort services. If it's still snowing hard when you arrive there is the possibility of chains being required, but if your hire car has winter tyres (it will have if you hire from the Swiss side of GVA) then you probably should get away with it. I drove to Tignes (from Les Arcs) for most of the past week and didn't need to fit chains once, even after fairly heavy overnight snow.
Have fun on your Snoworks course.

rob@rar, Thanks for that. Unexpectedly good news! Would prefer not to have to put them on unless necessary.

Ramma666,
Unfortunately the snow's all melted and the resort is closed ..............(which really means that I'm jealous 'cos you're going to Tignes and I'm stuck at work!!)
I'm sure someone will be along with the proper update soon!!

Just noticed this thread, thanks to rob@rar, for posting all the pics. Looking forward to getting there this coming saturday and getting out straight away to scrape off all the rust that's accumulated over the past few months. Anyone else flying out on the Chambery flight from Gatwick? I know quite a few are doing ITS courses and staying at L'Aigle so, will see you all on saturday evening. Looking like it should be at least as good as the same week last year

Kelskii, Noggy Junior and I will be - hoping to get a few runs in before tea (unless a white-out!)

By the way - does anyone know the name of the best (and convenient) ski hire shop for staying at L'Aigle? I did ask ItS but they failed to come back to me - the rotters.

Kelskii, We will be on the dawn flight from Gatwick to Chambrey. We are staying in the Annapurna chalet and doing the ItS course (me all mountain, him off-piste). Snow is looking stunning and we would like to try and get a few runs in too, before the course starts on Sunday.
I would sound more excited but had 4 injections and a tooth extracted this morning. Am currently in the twilight world of injections wearing off and nurofen kicking in. A painful way to part with £150

noggy, I've been to Tignes a couple of times but always stayed in Val Claret. The people I skied with stayed in Le Lac and hired from a place called 'Skifast' which is just up the hill from the main chair lift. I went in the shop a few times and they serviced my skis before I left; always seemed helpful enough, it's run by a guy named err, Guy. Not sure if this is convenient for L'Aigle but it's close to the lifts, where you'll end up anyway. I'm taking my own planks of wood and some rope to strap them on so don't need to bother hiring.
Beverley, that sounds painful, ouch, and that was just the £150; will be doing the All-Mountain too, it's looking good, hope you're feeling better by the weekend

Kelskii, thanks - will try and find them on-line. Should be cheaper to hire that way. Beverley, ouch but at least you'll be feeling much better by the weekend. See you on the bus - don't go without us!

george owen, Thanks, but I have my own kit. I took Kelskii's advice and have hired as he suggested - 40% discount from 'normal' price.

The snow is better than this time last year even though last year was very good for early snow. Have been on an All Mountain course this week and have been a lot more off piste than on because the conditions allow it which has been great fun and good practice. It was a bluebird day yesterday, clear skies and very sunny.

noggy, Kelskii, Beverley, we'll be on the same course, staying in the Annapurna. We're travelling out from Birmingham, but unfortunately quite a late flight, so no chance of getting any skiing in before Sunday. See you there!

sweet powder today and the visibility picked up later in the afternoon.... in the alpaka after a hard time trying (and failing) to ski the competition rut line... too tough for an old guy but a few of the others managed to ski it really well, fun to watch!!!

noggy, docsquid, Beverley, I'm only a one week lightweight too, 2 weeks sounds good but better go and see the family at Christmas or, risk being disowned. Going to Mayrhofen for New Year so, life's not so bad after all.
Beverley, I put my jockeys into my ski boots, maybe I'll try knickers next time as they weigh less and take up far less space, good idea. I'm only half an hour from Gatwick so will be having a lie in.
VolklAttivaS5, thanks for the reports, hope you're feeling better tomorrow.
