Thanks everyone for your good wishes, I've just been to see her, at the moment they're treating her for possible pneumonia/chest infection, it also looks as if she did have a stroke last night but they will need to do another ct scan later to check, the first one done straight after the attack showed nothing but apparently that is not unusual they do it to check that there is no bleeding rather than looking for a blockage which is what may have occured. Anyway she's mainly sleeping at the moment but I'll check in later, once again thank you everyone for your good wishes

She's made some progress, recognised me when I went in this afternoon, better breathing and improved speech, but still at an early stage yet, they will do another ct scan early next week

DGO, I take it that nothing anomalous ever showed up on the imaging studies, and no stroke-specific treatments like TPA were administered?
I'm interested because when this has happened in my own family, I usually am the one fielding questions from other family members like, "Why are we just waiting - Why can't we do something to help her?".
In my own mother's case, a young vascular surgeon was putting tremendous pressure on us to operate immediately, but this worried me, and after consults with independent neurologists, we decided to be conservative, wait, and manage her situation with medications. This proved to be exactly the correct thing to do as she has been asymptomatic for over a decade.
Anyway, I hope your Mom has continued to make good progress overnight.

Well today is not so good, she's been hearing voices or a voice telling her she has cancer (she doesn't) and she was very distressed this afternoon

Sorry to hear that DG. I know that drugs can help with hearing voices but I dont know how they would interact with her other problems. Lets hope the doctors are on the case...

hibernia, nothing really, she has her mobility (much to the annoyance of the poor nursing staff as she wanders arround late at night) but is still hearing things, today it was an imaginary telephone, I think she hears things then they somehow get locked in her memory and she keeps recalling them, I think I know where the cancer thing came from, as that is what the lady in the next bed has. Other than that she wasn't too bad today

David - seems things are on the up, lets hope that things improve, drugs can cause the problem of mis-orientation ( and yes I have read your earlier posts re Alzeimers). My mum had a cancerous growth removed last August ( 2003 ) and we went through a difficult phase ( not quite over yet - hence my trips to Ireland every two months ). I spent seven days bedside last August and wish you the best and lets hope that each day brings better news. Cheers!

D G Orf, sorry about your mum. Hope you all are coping.
The suspense has gotten to me and I post the following should you ever want to start down your original line of enquiry again:
Am female, determinedly single, 5'10, "fun loving" (i.e., like to meet new people, explore new places as long as my accommodations feature ample supplies of hot running water), enjoy mountains, ski at intermediate-ish level, eat lots of animal protein.
Could be interested in getting to know Switzerland (have never skied there) over a long weekend, depending on the budget.

Cee Bee, there's I think a regular train from Paris to Bern at the moment, Having just checked the times it's about 7.5 hours from Paris to Wengen using the TGV but I have no idea of the cost, as for the other costs a 2 day ski pass would start at just over 100 CHf (to cover the local area 160km of piste and 33 lifts), ski and boot hire would also be just over 100 CHf accomodation would depend on what you were after and when you stayed but would start from about 80 CHf per night including dinner and breakfast oh and plenty of hot water
For comparrison 2 weeks would cost the same rate per night but the ski pass would be 475 CHf (covering the whole area 213km of piste and 44 lifts) and the ski and boot hire would be about 4 times as much or arround 410 CHf

Hi D G Orf, hope the news on your mum is better these days.
Thanks for budget info. Could you provide more info on accommodations? Or would I find that in the 50 page Wengen string? 80 CHF is (awfully???) cheap!

Hi Cee Bee,
Quote: |
80 CHF is (awfully???) cheap! |
yes I know, why do you think I keep going back there
Anyway Mum first, she's actually made an amazing recovery, back to her old confused self with very little apparent damage from the stroke, unfortunately the section of the Ward she is in has now (as of today) been classed as more or less an isolation section, seems someone on it as a nasty infection or virus and none of the patients currently on it can leave, I even had to wear a very fashionable pink plastic disposable apron and latex gloves when I went to see her today, putting them in the bin on the way out.
As for the accomodation the room I have for 80CHf a night is ok, but it doesn't have toilet or shower ensuite, just a handbasin, the other facilities are just down the corridor though, I have had friends join me out there before in one of the few other similar rooms for the same price though, the hotel does me a deal, they have other rooms with ensuite though but obviosly they would cost more, other than the room, the rest of the hotel is very nice, lounge area with open fire, nice bar with relatively cheap (it is still Switzerland) prices, but the biggest and best thing about the hotel is the food, the owner always buys good ingreedients as he is also the head chef as was his father before him, typically there's a buffet breakfast and a five course evening meal, but on a thursday night there's effectively an all you can eat buffet with a wide selection of mainly cold meats and salads plus a massive dessert buffet, there's also a desert buffet one other day per week usually Saturday or Sunday. It's usually possible to ski right back to the hotel though the last few hundred meters are off piste. Mornings you can either walk up the hill to the village center or get a free lift in the hotel transport, which is great if you're wearing ski boots, I don't bother otherwise
It is actually possible to stay in Wengen for even less, there's a hostel, also dormitory accomodation in the Baren hotel, but I wouldn't suggest either though the Baren itself is quite plesant to stay in, Elizabeth B stayed in the Hotel Hirshen this summer for just 69CHf per night half board in a similar type of room to mine but in the attic, her comments can be found on the 6th page of the Jungfrau thread

Hi D G Orf, update on your mum reads positively to my inexperienced eyes. hotel (to be clear - room with ensuite!) sounds v. gd, like the hotel I stayed at during my (one) experience of skiing in Austria. Which dates are you likely to go? In any case, I have a job where vacation dates are never guaranteed although a long weekend is much easier to swing than an entire week.

Hi Cee Bee, Dates have yet to be determined but I'm aiming for the first 2 weeks in Feb with possibly a day or two at either end say Jan 30 to Feb 16, I have no idea what the rate would be (much much more than 80CHf per night) for a single room with ensuite, however room 509 (I think ) at the hotel Alpenrose would fit the bill it's a single room on the second floor of the annex, South Facing, with ensuite bathroom and a balcony, not quite as expensive as the main hotel. You could try telling them that I sent you and suggested that room, but don't expect a massive discount, I only get those when I book
