Zermatt looks pretty similar. Pack your Amber Solaire and enjoy the Dolomiti sunshine. At least you shouldn't get rained on!

Hi, quick question: is there a way to get from Seceda to Dantercepies without going through Santa Cristina and up Saslong? Doesn't look like it on the map... We're going to be there the week before the BB, very sorry to miss it |
I don’t think so but at least the blockade by the hotel owner appears to have ended so you can get straight up to ciampanoi without being forced onto his sochers lift

@8611, After seeing how much people here love the Dolomites, I feel super chill now From the webcams, I can tell that even though the current layer of snow is a bit on the lower side, it still seems to have a good base. Just a moderate amount of snow would make the off-pisters happy too. I'm very excited about the scenery and the food, for sure:)

A third of the way through the season and it looks like it has been a good start. Everything has opened on time and there has been plenty of good weather apart from one day of heavy rain in December. The snowmaking phase looks to have finished now.
From the webcams it looks a bit less busy than last year ?
Today looks overcast but there is a bit of snow in the forecast for tomorrow. Back to sunshine on Saturday
The longer term outlook is pointing at quite a strong warm up during the last week of January but it looks to stay dry which should help maintain the quality of the snow.

Hello all,
Currently have Corvara booked from Jan 23-29 and this looks to align perfectly with the forecast of warmer weather. I see the coldest day just reaching freezing and the rest of the days going as far up as 4-5 C. Never been to the dolomites and luckily no rain is forecasted, however I am considering making a drastic switch and heading somewhere colder (Zermatt??). Would love to get some thoughts on how the weather would affect the experience. |
I'm there the same week and considering that it will be perfect weather to enjoy the scenery and long lunches on a sunny terrace!
The January sun doesn't have too much power and it will be cold overnight, so not expecting the pistes to be suffering too much

@PDXSKI, if the forecast holds, it'll ski like a spring-ish day...the pistes may be firm to start depending on if they were groomed before or after the hill re-froze overnight. And probably sunny. IMO not a forecast that should dissuade you whatsoever. The Dolomites are fab.
PDX as in Rose City?

Yep! PDX meaning the rose city. Had to find a group of people who knew what they were talking about when it came to European skiing! Thanks for the responses all. Planning to stay the course and enjoy the sun!

just had a cold spell and snow showers in AltaBadia but warming up now. Only a couple of inches on Pralongia but every bit is worth having. Yesterday pm and this am it was very cold. One of the lifties said that a La Villa valley lift station hit minus 17.
Last night when we were coming back the local lift said minus 10 and were were freezing, same time today it was zero, quite a change.
Very quiet today no doubt due to the weather, conditions mixed but there was a purple patch for a couple of hours after lunch when the cloud lifted and the fresh snow was on spread nicely on the pistes. We just pottered around and it was perfect for that.
Hot chocolates
Hutte Jimmy 5/10, worst so far, stick with the cappuccino.
Club Moritzino, top of Piz La Ila 7/10
Rifiguo arlara 7/10
Baiata ciadinat 6/10
@8611, Evidently Charles LeClerc was seen in La Villa over the weekend.
Best run of the last couple of days was CIR down from Dantercepies lunchtime yesterday. Hardly a person on it, great piste conditions, lovely turns, sun was shining, amazing scenery, pretty much the best of what recreational skiing has to offer!

It is called 'La Ria' pretty much follows the route of the old Dantercepies bubble :: start on Cir and then split left at some point

We cut across this and could see right the way up for maybe half a mile, there was not a person on it then one lone skier appeared, given how many people on some other pistes it was bizarre. We headed over towards St. Cristina down Saaslong A which was both busy and icy, not as nice for the average skier.
Also, just a ps, since our last visit they have improved the signage for the SR anti-clockwise at Ciampinoi, it now has a sign saying ‘easy’ route clearly signposted which takes people away from the tricky red with the steep and often bumpy start on the ridge. There were still plenty of people stood at the top plucking up courage but hopefully it will reduce those numbers. I remember being one of those people and would have loved a sign saying easy and pointing in another direction !

@Scooter in Seattle, @richb67, was our last day of holiday today. Did the green Ronda cold and windy over the passes early doors today and Viz not great at times, but once in Arabba and Alta Badia the skiing was amazing. After 3 days of sun skiing in the snow was fun and we had a blast. Did some of my best ever skiing today and last run of the holiday was Cir, epic. Had the best time ever!

It's been an odd week crowd wise with us so far.
Some bits very busy at times and other bits very quite compared to same week previous years.
Snow has been very good.
Visibility today got challenging at times pm.
Yesterday pm and am today things were very cold in places.
There seems to be more French about this week?

@Garfield, I was surprised at how many people were here this week. I've only ever skied in Morzine/PDS, always similar time in Jan, and compared to that some places/times seemed very busy.
Went to Seceda on Monday and it was annoyingly crowded. Took ages to get the cable car up after La Longia. That was an epic run though and it was 100% worth it?

We'll be there in a couple of weeks so every time someone mentions a run/lift/particularly memorable restaurant, I think: oh, I know kind of where that is, then I look at a map--nope, not even close. Such a huge amount of skiing area! Looking forward to getting lost again.

@richb67, I can't vouch for the hot chocolate, but for food and bombardinos / calimeros we favour the restaurant down to the right and down the steps when you come off the top of the Piculin lift. Col de l' Ancona is it's name if I remember correctly. Big outside eating area with good views

Thanks @JHS, well we had a 50/50 chance of picking that one but will give it a go next time. Although I just put some trousers on for the first time in a couple of weeks and they are telling me to cut back on hot chocolate…

Let's add one more. The Restaurant at the end of La Longia is the best restaurant I have tried (twice on separate ski trips) on and off the slopes.

Yup , almost all the best slope restaurants I have eaten at, were far away key areas. Searched now and it's called Costamula I think

Looking at a first trip skiing to Italy on 30th March (yes Easter week). Have ski’d lots in France over the last couple of years and want to go to the Dolomites (bucket list stuff!).
My question… is the end of March a big risk on snow conditions. Not expecting crystal balls just looking for guidance from folks who have experience. Thanks in advance.

@Moorzee10, I would expect the higher slopes to be OK but the lower slopes to be hard in the morning, getting softer by lunchtime and encouraging a late and leisurely lunch during the afternoon. On piste there should be ample snow for a decent week but best to have an earlier start and either a quick lunch and be prepared for an early finish, or a late lunch and stop.
Sella Ronda should be do-able.
Armentarola (Hidden Valley) the horse tow will probably be replaced by a taxi.
Go for it. Embrace the differences. Enjoy it.

We arrived yesterday afternoon in Selva and managed to get up for one run. After some negotiation with the lady in the lift pass office who didn't want us to waste money on a half day pass, that late.in the day, we agreed to get a single ticket for €18. Pleased we did make the effort and it was a decent length run back down so felt worth the money. It was around zero degrees in the village but snow and slush were still being cleared. Top of the run was bumpy but fresh, turned to freeze thaw stuff further down.
Thoroughly enjoyed La Stua afterwards.
Thanks for the advice up thread on how to make the best of the afternoon

More snow overnight
Bumped up quite quickly again but more manageable today.
Windy high up and warnings some of the high lifts may close. No idea if any did.
Lunch at Nikeys Grill Arabba big meat fest probably not the place for veggies.
Skis to return and time for beers
That's us done till March

Strange day today, the overnight snow mentioned by @Garfield seemed to be quite patchy. Quite a bit around Alta Badia and Campinoi so slow going but when we went to Seceda there was much less and piste conditions we’re pretty good. Went down La Longia expecting problems and it was much better than expected, a bit icy in patches but maybe that was from the warmer day yesterday. Breezy on top though.
Was very bumpy in parts late morning but later in the day they seemed to have spread a bit and it was actually easier. I’d expected it to get worse, funny stuff this snow, I don’t understand it! But the message from this week is stick with it, we’ve had two days with poor mornings but great afternoons.
Much colder again today, -10 showing on a chairlift on the way back, yesterday the car defrosted for the first time since we arrived, today it’s iced over and saying it’s -6…. Snowplough is clearing the car park so everyone can leave tomorrow, must have put down 40-50 cm in La Villa over the last few days.
If you’re coming soon bring plenty of thermals.
The sun came out this afternoon and the views from the Dantercepies on Selva pass were amazing. We must come back in summer.
@Garfield, Have a safe trip home.
