@malarkey99, there's nowhere particularly busy in the village of Zell. The bar at the Lieblingsplatz Tirolerhof hotel is nice but if you're after apres ski vibes you'll not that beyond the bars by the lift stations.

Thank you! We went there tonight. Quiet, but nice bar with friendly Greek barman

What are the snow conditions like there at the moment? Coming in 10 days time and getting myself into the usual jitter of excitement and anticipation...

I'm looking for some advice for a small group in Hippach, next week. I am into the off-piste a little, and I know how fun it can be to cross an untouched field of fresh snow. So many fond memories of a ski teacher going outside the marked runs.
We have mostly beginner-intermediates in the group, capable of handling blue slopes and some reds. I would very much like them to experience an off-piste route, a bit away or out of view from the direct slopes. We'd be talking about a place accessible by a lift and perhaps a short walk, with few obstacles, fiendly angles (25-30 degrees have few avalanches), just a nice place to experience fresh unprepared snow without needing to be super advanced. I hope it'll be a good laugh, we'll see a bunch of snowy faces, and maybe dispel some of the myths that off-piste needs to be extreme to be fun
I know of a few places like that in the 3 valleys, but I haven't been to Zillertal before so I don't know the area at all. I'm planning to approach a ski school for some information and maybe book a private guide for a half day to take our group. Where would be the best place to start looking? In the Mayrhofen area, or more towards Zell, perhaps at Hintertux, or Hochfugen?

Snow conditions on piste are pretty good. Harder in the morning & softens up over the day. The pistes are quite quiet too.
We'd a private lesson (1st one in years!!) earlier with Oliver from Arena Skischool. Lots of exercises & he basically didn't stop. My old legs are in need of a rest & beer

Thanks for the info re conditions. If cover is good, I reckon I'll probably have a great time, as I'm quite a fan of soft snow.

Indeed. Should read, "if you're after apres ski vibes, you'll not find that beyond the bars by the lift stations."
That's specifically in Zell am Ziller though.

I'd probably suggest Zell am Ziller or Hochzillertal.
Perhaps you could get in touch with @SaraJ and try and book up a private lesson for your group, and she could show you some of the treats around Hochzillertal!

I was aware that Mayrhofen had a reputation for its full-on apres-ski, to the extent that when I went there a couple of years ago I was initially fearful that it might be noisy at night and I'd be kept awake. Couldn't have been more wrong, it was dead quiet at night (fortunately!), but also by the time we got down to the town after skiing most of the apres seemed to have wound down. We do tend to ski until the last lifts, though, and I get the impression the apres-ski probably kicks off a bit earlier, and is maybe concentrated at the bars by the lift stations, as @swskier says.

Any views on these hotels?
Elizabeth vs Kramerwirt vs Neuhaus
I've stayed at the Elizabeth, great food, great rooms, good spa, but soulless bar. Ok location, poor view in room we had.

I've stayed at the Neuhaus, and will be staying there again in March. Or rather, last time I stayed at the Neuhaus St Johann annex, which was pleasant enough although I suspect (and hope) the main hotel will be nicer (that's where I am staying in March). Good hotel, great spa, very good food and super breakfast, and very handy for the railway station for trips to Kaltenbach for Hochzillertal/Hochfugen. I would say bar was soulless at the Neuhaus as well, to be honest.

@J2R, Pleasant enough will have to do then, that's where we are next week! Super breakfast sells it to me:) Might even upgrade to half board on that recommendation but fancied trying some local restaurants on this trip

@J2R, thanks, for that, we will probably head out on the 23rd, the Strass is also a possibility, but any time I've stayed there I've been really disappointed with the food. Last time at the Berghof the evening meals were buffet style which i didn't like.
The roof top pool in the Kramerwirt seems fun.

@Dubmuffin, there's nothing wrong with the annex, it's just that it's a bit of a trek via a tunnel to the main bit of the hotel. I have no experience of the rooms in the main hotel, though - they may not be superior in any way. I always mean to try local restaurants but tend to get a bit lazy in the evening and if the food is good where I am (as it is at the Neuhaus), generally don't bother, so we've tended to opt for half-board of late. Generally works out better value for money too.

Every 5 years or so we do BnB rather than half board for a change, but end up spending a fortune on dinners compared to HB regardless of the resort. Last BnB in the Hof was Mike's Sports Bar, (Der Siegler), it was a great place for anyone wanting BnB, great breakfast on offer.

Neuhaus is doing a massive load of work on what was their nice garden, creating a new spa area, but does look like a nice hotel.
@J2R, on the apres, if you come down Penken for last lift, head up to the Bruck n Stadl at the top end of the main street and it'll still be going in there!

@J2R, I wasn't that keen on the trek to breakfast, but options were limited and time running out. I'm sure the skiing (amd breakfast) will make up for any trekking. We are usually lazy too regarding dinner, as run out of energy after skiing all day and some light apres!

We had a lovely day yesterday finding out way around the penken area, had a full range of conditions from a bit of hard icy wind blown piste, soft spring snow, slush and some that was just right. With today being full sun and no wind, we spent it at Hintertux and had a brilliant time...snow was pretty much perfect for me, and the decision to ski down to the bus was an interesting one, probably my first experience of knee deep slush moguls! Can't wait to see what the rest of the week brings...

It snowed all night in Hochfügen - about 30cms new snow, though you can still feel the old tracks underneath.
The forecast is for snow all day so hopefully tomorrow will be worth getting up early for!

@SaraJ, Fran sent me a photo of a similar amount up at the Unterbergalm
We also have a few cm's in our garden this morning, although by the time I made it to about Kaltenbach on the train to work there was none in the valley.

Looked very seasonal from our hotel window in Mayrhofen this morning with snow falling and the trees covered! Crystal text tells us all the lifts and roads are closed, not sure we believe them...but good to have a midweek late start.

@swskier, Thanks for the tip. I knew there would be somewhere suitable, just didn't know where! I only needed tiny today anyway we had one injury on Tuesday so they needed a day off anyway. Trying to decide how to spend the last two days.. I fancy Zell but we haven't actually made it to Rastkogel and Eggalm yet.
