I just hope there will be enough for Andre Martzolf and Emile Allais to be open by the 28th - and Grenouilles!

Today brought fresh snow, low visibility and getting back on the long skis/free skiing. From tomorrow on it's giant slalom in the gates.
Wonderful powder on Mont blanc slope, stade de slalom de Belle Plagne. A couple ruts on the stade de Plagne Centre. Top to bottom runs to La Roche, Montalbert and down from La grande Rochette. After today, I suspect the GS trainer to actually train herself endurance for the super slalom this is a joke as unfortunately 2024 won't have a super Slalom but still, lots of long descents.

They will only open if the streams have frozen.
Grenouilles might as well be open now judging by the amount of people skiing around the closed sign - again it depends on the stream ‘Bief Bovet’ being frozen over where piste is next to and crosses the stream.
Therefore snowfall doesn’t guarantee opening.
(The same applies to the reds down into Montalbert.)
Chopkins13 the steep bit is about 75 yards of moguls - plenty of room to rest on each edge - it’s only horrible when it’s been scraped bare and the bushes are coming back through!

Winter equipement is mandatory even if there is no snow on roads, this is the law......

Thanks all for the driving advice, much appreciated and lots to think about there
Especially interesting re it being the law to carry snow equipment, need to look into what to do in relation to this.

Law to have winter equipment in the car - not to have them fitted at all points - you only fit them when required so you would not "have them put on in advance"

Today was cloudy in the cloud, but lovely above. The clouds mostly hung up untill 2200m, both the summit of Blanchets and of the Becoin already enjoyed a magnificent view, in the sun above a valley filled with clouds.
GS training took place on the stade de slalom de Belle Plagne so the starting point was in the sun, and from Gate 5 onwards we dove into the cloud.
It felt very cold today.
Good first day back in the gates.
Not much people around compared to last week clearly.
This morning around 8.15-25am the road up the mountain was blocked apparently, blocking a number of people heading to work as well as at least 1 SAP bus. Lift opening in Bellecôte for Blanchets, Colosses and Arpette was 10-15 minutes after 9am, the indicated hour.

Hi folks.
Booked last minute trip for a week from Jan 27th. Wondering if there are any ski instructors or companies this group recommends to teach my partner for a few sessions that week. Staying in Montchavin.
It'll be her 2nd week learning as an adult, and first week went reasonably well starting every day with an instructor. Appreciate lots will be booked, but we're looking for a couple of lessons early in the week, to remind her, increase her confidence and keep at bay any bad habits that she'll pick up from me for as long as possible .
I'll take a spin through the thread to see recommendations but tips would be very welcome.

boredsurfin, Andre Martzolf and Emile Allais open? Excellent news.
Especially as they were closed all last season.
(Though they did make for some excellent "off piste" skiing on days after a good fall of new snow).

@chopkins13, they are much the same (and both very nice with decent snow) and they join together for the last pitch into Roche (which is the least pleasant part imo, unless the snow is really good!). So much better than that awful blue! I'm sure you will enjoy
|
|
|
|
|
|
@chopkins13, yes I'd echo @Jo225's comments - they are very similar, however we normally ski Emile Allis, which I think is marginally better. As mentioned the runs are pretty nice, until you get to the last 100m which is steep and can be icy. Hopefully, with all the fresh snow, that'll be skiing much better this year! Last few years it's been closed so be nice to ski them again this year.

@Handy Turnip, @Jo225, Thanks both - I’m a cruisey blue kind of guy but don’t mind trying the odd red……as long as it’s not Kamikaze off Grand Rochette

Grenouille looking back from Envers charlift - Its a gentle slope down from Restaurant 360 to the wide steepish bit in the photo then a lovely run along the bank of the Bief Bovet stream to the start of the Adrets and Envers chairlifts. As you can see there are some off piste alternatives through the trees ...
Also - todays Weather report: Horrible low/flat light as can be seen in the pic but pistes in excellent condition. Lovely sunny day forecast tomorrow.

Thanks for the picture @boredsurfin, looks like some decent moguls there -presume it’s pisted and a bit flatter first thing in a morning? Lovely to still see snow on the trees, always a good indicator of conditions!

@chopkins13, Was a bit warmer today +1 so some of that snow is dropping off. Those moguls ...hmm really depends on usage and snowfall, they dont put a machine down it very often, sometimes they run it up one side only leaving it half moguls and half piste From memory, its a few years since I've been here and its open, one side was easier than the other. On one occasion it was easier to go through the trees, but that was probably my kids leading me astray!
Andre Martzolf or Emile Allais? both are pretty similar.

Excellent snow conditions. Last day with flatter light, but good goggles help out a lot. I admit to taking a few different lenses to training to get that part as right as possible.
We took the Giant slalom training to the steep stade de slalom of Plagne Centre. Lots of GS training going on there aiming for January eurotest passes: oxygène and UCPA both had their GS gates out as well, as well as some club de sports.
It's been years since I skied GS on the Plagne Centre wall, so it took some getting used to. Upon arriving at the place, before putting the gates in the snow, unfortunately one of our party suffered a knee injury which was awful. Presumably an acl rupture. Clearly this made everyone hold back the first (few) run(s).
Snow conditions were ideal : firm snow, remaining in good shape, so no resetting gates in the afternoon.
It remains not as busy as the previous holiday weeks in the skiing area. Exception for Bellecôte where there are a couple thousand Dutch students this week, having privatised Le Bonnet and the area of the ice skating rink.

I'm staying in Arc 2000 but I took a quick trip into La Plagne today. Up to to Roche de Mio, the backside down Levasett and then on to Montalbert. Snow conditions were great and I made the journey from first lift in Arcs to Montalbert in just under 2 hours. On my return to Arcs I persuaded Mrs Hyperkub out for a relaxed trip to Villaroger thus completing the end-to-end round traverse. A great day of skiing.

@hyperkub, Some excellent mileage there, well done! I genuinely don’t think this would have been possible in the crowds of last week! The end to end run is on my bucket list. There’s an excellent thread on here somewhere detailing the many attempts and different routes….

Love a good pit stop at la ferme when you've done that lovely run down to Villaroger. Downside is that long sequence of old slow lifts back up to Les Arc, but i guess you take the rough with the smooth.

It's hilarious that it's classed as a red, there's a short red at the top of Les Arc between 2000 and 1800 forgot what it's called but that is equally steep for a red.

@Russeh, I'm glad they leave it as a red, I imagine it would be "natur" if black and covered in moguls.
In my opinion there's already a lack of "stepping stone" pistes in the resort, eg ones that bridge the gap between red runs and black runs.
Getting mogul practice on shallower terrain is hard when there aren't many shallower mogul areas and practising steeps is hard if all the steeps are mogully!

Magical day! Only happy faces out there. Sun out all day, slopes in lovely condition. Quite cold though. 4 GS runs on the stade de slalom in Centre, starting just below the first wall, and video analysis in the afternoon. The best thing when it's cold is that the weather tells you to have the dessert

@boredsurfin, You are right. Having looked at the old piste maps Malatray was changed from Red to Black in 2008! FYI There's a collection of La Plagne piste maps here: https://www.perso-laplagne.fr/CollectionPlansPistes.htm
