The snow was holding up well at Ra Valles and the Cinque Torri was the best skiing of the week with higher altitude and better orientation..
Talking of Cinque Torri (lovely area isn't it?) here's a photo of the old single person chairlift that went up to the top of the front side of Cinque Torri to Averau that I took in 2011 (there weren't many single chairs about even then, a year or two later it was replacedby the current 2 person chair with a moving carpet entrance)

Oh my word; all 8 of our party had noro in Corvara last week too! Were people staying in different hotels? We were in the Greif. I didn’t realise it was so widespread.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It was the highlight of the week for us. Just a magical place and kids said they would ski there everyday if they could.
@Alastair Pink, What a lovely photo - so romantic!
@swoafs, we are staying at Posta Zirm. Friends at La Villa and San Cassiano were fine.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@swoafs, we stayed at Berghotel Ladinia. I heard it was across the whole of Corvara - every hotel! For such a widespread and rapid outbreak you start to wonder about contaminated water supply??
I kind of hope there is an explanation like that which can be acted on - doesn’t do a place any good to be labelled as sickness-prone. It was our first trip to the area and other than the noro we absolutely adored it.

It's the iciest morning yet in Folgaria even though it barely dipped below freezing last night so I'm heading to the sunniest slopes for the thaw.
By midday everywhere will be soft again.

15 to 20 deg colder at the weekend...
If the nights are clear and still the snow can freeze by radiative cooling even if the air temp a bit above the ground (where it is measured) isn't actually below freezing.

I've often wondered about that. Thanks for confirmation.
And the sunny piste is already soft with a few lumps on the steep bit, I only missed first lift by 5 minutes!

Does make you wonder, I am usually a bit sceptical about water supply theories as usually these things spread around institutions etc by people but this does sound like it is very widespread but within one area.

@T Bar, see my comment above re the Zermatt typhoid outbreak. The trouble with that was that the authorities tried to hush the whole thing up, which facilitated the spread. I know of two people who brought it back to the UK (fortunately sent to isolation hospitals very quickly, in one case by my GP father) and one of them was vey ill indeed.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@Hurtle,
I'm not saying it never happens but usually people are far too quick to blame the water when generally the problem is poor hygiene by food handlers etc.
You know it makes sense.

Sounds a bit like Ischgl March 2020...
..that was a fun time to be there; 5 hours to clear the valley, many people stuck in buses (luckily I had a hire car)

Yes indeed. But the scale of this is weird.

@T Bar, I agree. I’m not usually one to blame the water (definitely not a proponent of conspiracy theories) but most of these kinds of outbreaks are often confined to cruise ships or single hotels where poor food hygiene is very likely to be the culprit. Here however it’s the whole town (locals and tourists alike regardless of where they are eating/staying in Corvara). Vomiting bugs don’t spread that rapidly across whole towns normally. If it was spreading through normal droplet transmission you would expect a slower rate and extent of spread. Unfortunately, it’s not unheard of for a local groundwater to be contaminated with norovirus or other viral pathogens which can end up in water supply.

Right, come on now please, let's put the illnesses and aspersions on water quality aside and get back to the real subject.
How's things looking out there? How's the piste? Snow howitzers in full volley? Cheers

Igor's latest video is covering the Civetta ski area. He and Gabriel (what a hot shot skier he now is!) ski round the area with scenes which will be extremely familiar to anyone who has been on the preBBWUW! http://youtube.com/v/ZcqUcuSJLKE

Hey, I'm off to corvara for the first time on Saturday, a couple of our group may or may not do the sella ronda.
Can they get an alta badia ski pass and do a day upgrade?
Thanks

Need to ask the ticket office as I thought you could.Though the upgrade will probably be the same price as the difference between buying the full pass in the first place.

You can get 5% off lift pass prices through the MyDolomiti app

Unless they are very early intermediates they may wish to have the option of skiing elsewhere anyway if its warm. The Alta Badia is lovely but it is quite low with a lot of south facing slopes. Having the option of popping over to Arraba which is not far and has more north facing slopes without having to do the Sella is worthwhile in warm weather.

The 5% discount also applies online and you can select to pick up from your accommodation if where your staying has signed up.

IIRC, when we had a day out at San Pelligrino from Alleghe the break even point was three days away from your home area.

Virtually instantaneous. Once you've paid online they send you an email with a QR code on it. Once you're in resort you can go to the skipass issuing machines they now have installed, you just scan the QR code and your skipass pops out!

Thanks. What if you do it delivered to the hotel (mine is included)? And I assume that the machines are at main lift stations only? I am right next to Nives drag so I'm guessing I should get it delivered to the hotel, or go to - presumably - Ciamponoi gondola?
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@buchanan101, sorry I don't know the turnaround time for delivery to a hotel. Yes, the machines will be located at main lift stations only. You can find the locations of the machines (aka Pick Up Boxes) here: https://www.dolomitisuperski.com/en/Ski-pass/selling-points
@Alastair Pink, Thanks for your help! Exactly the two pick up points I expected in Selva. Open 24 hours it seems.
Aha.. need to do it 2 days in advance; time to check that it's unlikely to be a white out on the first day...

@buchanan101, i ordered ours just before midnight on Thursday and were given them when we checked on Saturday afternoon.
I’m not sure if it applies just to Val Gardina - the hotel advised us to carry photo id as there were random checks that ski passes were being used by the name on the pass - they offered to photo copy our passports.
After all it is free

it a legal requirement to carry ID at all time in Italy anyway

At our lift station you didn't have to provide it as long as you gave your name and sex.
