Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@backhojo, I was skiing in the Trois Vallees on Friday - and for sure they might have more open, but it's full of punters, lift queues galore and slopes as busy as Serre over New Years - I was so glad to be back home. There is simply no comparison with the bus em in bus em out resorts you find in the Tarentaise and Serre. Oh and the prices for drinks, you have to have mug written all over you to be paying those prices!

Links will be shut because of the wind, still howling.

Had an interesting day will post a report and pics later.

It could also be that no-one properly updated the website today. Just a thought.

I think the official serre che site is updated regularly as it does show a date and time of the last update which is usually pretty recent (hours not days). Also the piste map appears to show live what is open and closed...after 5 pm it always shows all lifts closed , which they are due to them finishing for the day, which would go to support the fact that the website is pretty good.

I think we have been spoiled in previous years at bigger linked resorts (3V, PDS, Espace Killy , Paradiski) with a lot of variety and lots of options. Maybe I am subconsciously nervous about returning to serre che as its where I bust my ACL four years ago and looking for an excuse to not return to the scene of the accident !!!!!

Think I could show you a lot of variety and options Cool

This was today.

A lovely (and safe) ski tour with my OH up to one of our favorite summer villages, Granon, then on up into the Bois de Granon, with a sublime descent, except dogs found the cold and depth of the powder a little too much.

After the village I had to make tracks up through the woods in the deep powder which was pretty hard work, not only through the powder but making sure I was taking the right and safest route.

At one point decided to ski a long traverse holding on to Beanie (a dog and not the OH) as she was finding the going too hard at one stage.

Snow was superb and not at all wind affected as you can see from the amount of snow in the village.

When we turned off the main road to Nevache the temp was -4.5 by the time we parked up it was -10.5, and no sign of any wind at all completely different to Serre!

This is the route https://www.strava.com/activities/472460900

That's for all the info. weathercam....it all looks lovely but not suitable for us as we have the kids with us too. High mileage piste bashing is what works for us, hence why we like all the lifts to be open 😊
Will see how things develop. We have the car with us so plan a day in montgenevre and maybe one in Risoul...will help to give us the variety. Is PSV worth the drive ?

@backhojo, but when you come out I'm not too sure that along with all the pistes being open, that they will have, each and every day one inch of of the finest champagne powder on them for the total duration of your stay.

And of course wall to wall sunshine, with no wind and ambient temps of +3-4 degrees, along with no crowds or queues to get in the way of your "high mileage piste bashing" Toofy Grin

I really do think you might be better staying in the Trois Vallees Toofy Grin

Now you are just taking the ......lol

I know it can't be perfect every time but I have to try !

You get a full season we get two bites of the cherry every year...we are going to Les arcs at Easter as well ! Like to try and mitigate against all the things that might not be perfect...ie pick a high resort at Easter etc etc

I guess with a larger resort there are more option if things aren't good. With serre che...if it's mild then it's probably going to rain at resort level...but then I chose to make the booking so I guess I have to stick with it !

I shall watch your blogs with interest and report back as what we decide to do !

Seems like it was not just our dogs that were having problems with the low temps and powder yesterday.

These guys from Club Alpine Briancon (CAF) were in the Ayes sector and came across this young lost hunting dog who started following them and was then to weak to follow. So they emptied a pack and took the dog down. I have photos somewhere of when we did a similar thing to one of ours!

So good news this morning is that the wind is not as strong, but no sunshine and temps -10.

Think I might "try" to have a day off.

After posting the pics of yesterday's tour, a friend who is in Trois Vallees for two weeks asked, from looking at previous photos, is it always sunny in Serre Che.

Last week in Merible he reckoned that they only saw the sun for 10hrs, and on one of those days that was Friday when I was there!

As a few know I do a number of road trips to other resorts and sometimes chatting to guides / instructors you mention that you're base in Serre Che and they nod approvingly always commenting that the weather here is far better as being in constant white out can be a bit depressing after a while

@backhojo,
One other small thing about the number of open pistes....there are some pistes, on the back of the Prorel especially, that are mainly south facing. These can only open when the snowpack is good. Hence 100% open throughout the resort is very rare.

If you are prepared to drive, then Montgenevre with access to the Voie Lacteé will give lots and lots and lots and even more lots of piste mileage - on top of all the mileage in Serre Che. Hope the children are equally happy to spend all their time clocking distance.

PSV, Vars also worth visiting.

Seriously, there is now a decent amount of snow, you travel in less than two weeks. Just pray for decent weather for the week. And whatever you get, enjoy it and be glad you have the luxury of being able to take two ski holidays a year. Very Happy

First day on the hill today. It was cold on the lifts and the light was a bit flat but the snow was nice! Good cover, empty pistes and can't say I was affected by the closed pistes. More than enough open to cruise around the whole area.

Started in Villeneuve, skied over to the Prorel lift then made my way over to Monetier. Back to Villeneuve for lunch then skied Super Draye a couple of times then back to Villeneuve. Jumped on loads of lifts in-between but that was the general gist of the day.

I should add, my legs are sore now! Classic case of going too hard first day. Should have called it quits after my late lunch.

Good mileage, nice Cool snowHead

I quite like some of those runs from the top of Prorel back towards Serre Ratier - fun and blasty!

Close to Super Draye is the Clot Gauthier red - another thrilling run.

I remember liking the Clot Gauthier red a couple years ago when I visited, a couple laps in order tomorrow.

When I visited in 2014 Monetier was horribly icy so didn't spend much time there. Was good to go back today and enjoy some fun cruisy blues.

I see there a little snow forecast tonight but don't know how likely that actually is!

@LoopyLoser, aaaaahhhhh someone else from Shingleshire Toofy Grin

Well there was no Serre Cheeffect yesterday, light very flat and no wind as I decided to go for a kite at Le Casset rolling eyes

At least it renewed my acquaintance with my kite as I did not do any last season as setting them up is a tad different to kites you use on the sea.

A lot brighter today and zero wind in the valley as I can see smoke rising vertically out of a chimney.

Not too sure what to do, I'm sort of curious about the state of the snow pack up in the Galibier sector as to whether it's hard pack wind affected boiler plate concrete with 20cm sastrugi Puzzled

I can see more lifts and pistes are open now. I think it looks like it's going to hover around 80% open for a while now. We haven't made a final decision yet but suspect we will still come to serre che and have an away day in Risoul and one in montgenevre and PSV maybe. That will give us some variety.

@backhojo, you could also do an away day in Deux Alpes and ADH from here with your pass, and then that way you wouldn't have to ski here Toofy Grin

Was with a few friends last night (Maison de Bez followed by Cavaillou) and everyone was commenting on the nigh on deserted slopes. Army go this Thursday so will be a ghost town!

No clouds in the sky so going for a bit of a hike with les chiens to see what the snow is like. Though don't think we'll score like last Sunday.

@weathercam...ha ha ha !! Stayted in ADH last year so not fussed about driving over there. LDA - cant be bothered with the hassle of the "temporary road". Montgenevre...skied there before but it was at easter a the italian side was closed as the lazy workshy italians had packed up for the season ! woudl be nice to see what we missed out on. PSV never been so interested. Risoul - our first ever ski hol was there and have fond memories of many a comedy moment whilst learning to ski...never been back so would like to.
Happier now than last week - looked at what is open and pretty much everything we need / like to ski. just need to work out what to do with lift passes now as I know Risoul isnt included whereas a day at PSV and a day at montgenevre are (i am correct arent I ?). ideally we would go there midweek but that will split the lift pass and lose the discount you get for buying a longer duration pass
we are skiing on our departure day (sunday 7th Feb) for half a day so suppose could just buy a half day pass in Serre che then shorten our main pass by a further day so we can go to Risoul on the saturday. would be grateful for any tips on this as my french is not great and the english on the lift pass page of the website is not 100% clear (ie is it one day away at EACH resort or just one day away somewhere ?. cheers

Hi all. Coming to Serre Chevalier on Saturday for a week (excited!) . I've been checking the weather and it would seem that the general trend would be for much milder temperatures next week. In the experience of those that are local, will this have a profound effect on the snow coverage? We have several total beginners in the party, so would this mean slushy ice lower in the valley? Also tips for good runs to check out would be very gratefully received. Thanks!

@Seanyb74, @enda1, think you guys could be in for a good week on the pistes with pleasant temps and loads of sunshine from the looks of things, and much better for the beginners rather than hard boiler plate snow, and it's not going to be full on spring slush.

Have a friend here at the moment who was due to be out here for four weeks but illness meant he had to miss out on ten days, but he has three other friends arriving this Sat too (he's going to Turin to get them).

Resort will hopefully be very quiet next week.

Where are you all staying, chalets. appts hotels etc I only really know well the bars / restaurants in the Villeneuve / La Salles Les Alpes sector.

If you have kids then the Grotte (bottom of the Aravet) is a great place for kids food and cheap and the same true of the Station bottom of the Luc Alphond in Chantermerle.

Peyra Juana on the lower slopes of Monetier is a great place. Then up here, Pi Mai on the slopes by Vallons lift, can be expensive but one of our favourites and the Echaillon and then at Serre Ratier Trolls below Cafe Soleil we've started to use and it's very good.

If you want places to eat in the evening then let me know.

Today nice little ski tour / dog walk on the South facing slopes above Chantermerle, almost spring snow on the descent.

Will post some pics laters.

That sounds great, one other question.
Are the high altitude greens 'proper' greens or a bit more 'Val d'Isere greens'? It would be great to take the newbies up high, but could do without having to coax down terrified beginners!

I take it there are no secret (and safe!) powder stashes left? I'm out on the 23rd too for some snowboard off piste with the UCPA. We'll have a car but all the local resorts look to be in similar condition.
If the conditions off piste aren't great I may make the most of the piste conditions and spend some time re-learning to ski and getting some vitamin D!
