@red 27, The Farmers all say the same thing.
The ground even at high altitude is far to warm.Normally this starts to cool in late October.
When & if big snow comes there will be extreme avalanche danger.

There is also talk of the race weekend being cancelled in January with the current conditions and snow coverage.

Not seen anything official about it being cancelled yet, but wouldn't be surprised, the start area up in Kapall is south facing so has been soaking up a lot of rays! Having said that, does look like there are a couple of cannons running up there at the moment...

First day out today. Nice morning on the pistes-what is open is in better condition than I expected. In particular the top half of stuben has some lovely grippy snow. As expected, off piste limited to non-existent...

First day out here too. Short day after a lazy start and having to do the ski hire rugby scrum for our son.
It wasn't an awful day, but very variable conditions. Cannons were running lower down in the morning and snow on Nasserein pomma wasn't bad. Up to Gampen and it was roasting, even with just 2 layers on. Snow was softening up bit skiable. Took run down blue from Kappal around 2pm and it was very soft, almost slushy in places, and cutting up badly.
Took a quick solo run across 20, 9 & 4 then back up Mattun. Variable conditions from hard to soft artificial. Last run back down was on Fang, which was similar, a real mixture of everything.
Will probably try Galzig tomorrow to see if it's any better, then off to Lech on Tue. Skiing is bearable but more snow is badly needed.

I'm after a little help from the Arlberg experts on the forum. We're off to Lech in a couple of weeks time and I can't remember if the ski busses to St Anton run from Lech or if you have to get to Zurs to get it,or if the bus from Lech is a chargeable post bus. Thanks in advance for your help.

@stevew,
Post bus (chargeable) runs from Lech to St Anton, you can get on in Zurs too of course.
Free bus runs Lech - Zurs - Alpe Rauz. From Alpe Rauz you can get the lift up in to the St Anton network.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

We caught the free bus from Lech to Alpe Rauz twice last weekend. Not too long (or hot) on the bus, and very convenient access to the St Anton network.

OK. We're over on Montafon and have nearly exhausted the possibilities in three days. Planning a day in Arlberg. But which bit is likely to have the best snow? Getting a bit tired of icy artificial ball bearings, so aiming to get up higher, if that's going to help. Any tips from snowheads who are over there this week?

@stevo, we were there last week. St Anton much better than Lech, Warth etc. Valluga, Shindlergrat run reasonable, Kandahar, Kappall red also not bad. Run to St Christoph also quite enjoyable all things considered.

@Stevo, skied St.Anton Sun & Mon and Lech today. Been mainly on the blues as skiing with wife & son but I'd say it's all very similar. Lech probably has marginally more snow but both resorts have the same thin patches and cutting up badly after late morning or early afternoon, especially where the slopes are in the sun.
Hopefully the lower temps that are forecast will help a bit but nothing other than a really big dump of snow is going to fix the situation. Those coming out in Jan may fare a little better just due to the reduced traffic compared to New Years week.
Personally we're intending taking the train to Innsbruck tomorrow for a 'day off', then back on slopes Thu, Fri. Partly due to sore legs, but if conditions were better we'd likely be skiing.

Cannons running this evening and reduced traffic on the slopes will definitely help, the Doctors are doing good business!
No fireworks New Years Eve, ground is dry and there is a risk of fire (been a big fire in St Jakob am something or other, forget which, already).

You are.... but if there's too much snow then conditions could get very nasty. Pay very close attention to the avalanche bulletins, a thin base with a sudden cooling and dumping 50cm+ on top can be very unstable.

Don't get me wrong, there will be safe places to ski, but it could be riskier than normal. Guide is always a good idea though, not just for safety but for finding quality snow in thin conditions.

Skinned up Maroikopf with Piste to Powder today. Didn't ski to Ferwall or Langen as usual but Skied a run in the opposite direction. Then skinned some more and skied another run before skinning back up Maroi and back down to Stuben. Some decent smow high-up but manky crust lower down. Just hoping for snow at the weekend. Now knackered.

@redeye Thanks for the tip. Had a reasonable day in St Anton yesterday. And a much better one today - a bit cooler and the cannons running overnight had made a big difference. Going back tomorrow - @snowrach took the opportunity of the limiting conditions to use the test centre at the top of the Galzig bubble and ended up buying some new skis! Collecting them first thing and yr.no is forecasting some light snow tomorrow to break them in.

Snow cannons running again tonight in St Anton. We went to Lech today with a stop in Zurs on the way. Zurs was nice and quiet but blue 17 was almost bare in a couple of places. Lech was enjoyable with a great lunch in Rud Alpe.

Bit of fairy dust fell around lunchtime today-around 5-10cm up the hill depending on location. Refreshed the pistes but no miracle cure yet...great to see it after a week of sunshine and ice though

Yup, tho not quite as many as previous years. Didn't seem to be many whizzing round the centre of town, bouncing off the buildings and over people's heads from what friends have said (I was having a "quiet" one in Nasserein). Anthony's and Valluga Hotel had fireworks, but they paid for the licence according to locals.

Weather.
I am afraid no large amounts of precipiation are expected in the near future. However it will become a lot colder later this week getting down to -20-30C at night.
Generally St Anton was very quiet for Sylvester (New Years)compared to previous seasons.
For folks who have booked Arlberg be thankful you did not book anywhere else because we have top to bottom sliding be it kunstschnee (man made)
