Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Kevin Byrne, I think it is probably something like Yret, Cucumelle, Bez, Route Frejus. I've loaded Maprika on the phone so conditions willing will try that run tomorrow morning.

Back home on Sunday and so looking forward to the storms....

t40ora, you can't do Yret plus Cucumell in one blast though . It involves a charilft in between.

t40ora,
Without looking it up, I think you need to use a lift to get up to the Cucumelle from the Yret??

Last time I posted on this topic I did look at the Plan des Pistes and it struck me that if you include the long winding Green road based runs (like the one that cuts across the Luc Alphand) you could ski quite a distance....so maybe you'd need to keep the lowest level at Blue for the exercise to be worth it (perhaps with the stipulation that Green would be allowed if there was no alternative).

Enjoy your last day...

Is it organised or is it just a bunch of snowheads who happen to be coming to Serre at the same time?

I could ask Mathieu (UIAGM guide) if he is around, think I might be skiing with him next week anyway.

Weathercam, there were 120 of us travelling to Arraba and only around 50 made it there. Some drove over closed passes, some came from other places in the Dolomites or via the one bus that made it that week. The rest were in Alleghe in various hotels, as the avalanche risk on the road to Arabba was so great there was almost no traffic running there for the whole week. We still had snow, 5 days of it still falling from the sky, and we still had ski lifts and pistes.

Hells Bells, aaahhhh Dolomites a few weeks back that explains it rolling eyes

Snow conditions sounded very similar to our trip to Barages in the Pyrenees last year when so so much snow forced the resort to close the lifts (all bar one that we could skin up to) and then just after we left the village was evacuated.

Temps here today very mild already will make off piste heavy, I know we should go up as will be the last empty day for a quite a while, but going to don x-country kit and take dogs for a hike along the pietons path.

Well thought someone better get a 10km run in today Toofy Grin

Went from here up to Monetier and back, all the top chairs in Monetier (Yret etc) closed due to wind that was howling and made it hard work for us going back, surprised Col is open!

Was nine degrees and a few drops or rain Crying or Very sad

Had a chat with the guy that runs the shooting range on the x-country course - €55 for an hour and 50 rounds .22 50 meters, might do that with my mate next week and split it. He's a top knob clay shot, and many many many moons ago back in the Air Cadets I achieved "marksman" but think that was only at 15 yds but with some crappy old Martini rifle (little boys and all that) Cool

Was +3 overnight, woke up to melt water running off roof and light rain, and texted my friend arriving in Turin at 10:30 "saying bad news it's raining, good news you will not need chains (he's hiring car)"

Hour later 08:30 temps now +1 and snowing hard - texted him again to tell him to check chains at airport rather than side of the road in the slush rolling eyes

After a nice couple of hours of x-country yesterday, thinking about trading my classic skis in for some modern skating skis and getting a season pass as my strategy to beat the hordes over the next three to four weeks Cool

Mind you this weather is good, and maybe French families might think not worth buying a weekly pass because of the weather and take one day at a time, or half days etc Twisted Evil

Additional Edit: just been speaking to my mate above La Grave and they have 15cm already and this site click here has various rain radar / precipitation forecasts across France and you can see the "spread" of this latest band.

Hells Bells, think will be normal strategy - if there's fresh first lifts and trees finishing off with a Cucumelle hike and long run back down.

White out = lunch time in the trees

Sunny and a still some fresh = touring

Anything else day off or x-country

Oh and with these friends coming out today possibly one day with a guide which will give us priority access on lifts etc Toofy Grin

Weathercam, good plan. We have skied in SC over half-term, and the snow was poor that year. Crowds were never a huge problem except at the drag lifts that have nearly all been replaced.

Well probably the best day of the season so far, and was nigh on empty - done more a detailed report with pics in another thread in the Piste section entitled "Half Term Madness in France"

http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=108559

But this was the hike to the left of the Vallons chair (towards Balme), this was 13:00 and as you can ski hardly skied

On our cross country area it would be the dogs that would be shot - an absolute "no no", as are pedestrians and snow-shoers. One of the ski instructors was complaining mightily about the sled dogs that came through the area on the "Grande Odyssée" a couple of years ago and said they played hell with his careful waxing. wink

pam w, three or four weeks ago we paid for our tickets and she saw the dogs with us, ten minutes later a ski du fonde pisteur told us no dogs, so we used the pietons route which was better as they had closed some of the x-country, and something you can do with classic as opposed to skating.

And if you see above I do say "going to don x-country kit and take dogs for a hike along the pietons path" rolling eyes

It was only when I was talking to the guy that runs the range and is the x-country ski instructor that we talked about dogs - and he basically told us no problems as they are little and no one was around unlike three or four weeks back, so it was only the last couple of km that we used the piste.

Poles actually make more indentations than the dogs paws, and sled dogs are a little bit bigger than our Jacks wink

rogg, spot on about 6cm in from the left along the ridge as you look at the picture was where the old Balm lift finished.

They usually bash it to make it easier for hiking but as you can see that's not happened.

Other half has gone down with the Mountain bug she's been fighting the past couple of days, and our plan was to ski Montgenevre / Italy today as she has a 19:00 flight ex Turin today, and even dosed up she's bed bound Crying or Very sad

Would need to stay high today to find good off piste as it got so warm yesterday here in resort and then a hard freeze overnight so going to be a gnarly crust to around 2200 I reckon.

Looks like touring would be a good option today to get some lines.

That said think the pistes today will be in fabulous condition and looks like fair amount of sunshine could be on offer, and our friends (who have skies 20 plus years Trois Valleys / Verbier etc) said yesterday was one of their best ever days in the mountains, and they loved Monetier and lunch in the Peyra Juana, and was so empty - more converts to Serre Cool

Today started off with light snow falling and a complete white out.

I opted for x-country with the dogs as thought not too many people would be out, and minus the OH wanted to push the pace, though at first one of the Jacks kept stopping.

I bought a season x-country pass for €55 which covers the whole valley (normally €8 per day) the €92 one is for any x-country area in the region, though I'll probably only do three or four trips to the likes of Nevache / Cervieres etc so did not stack up.

By the time I started snow had stopped and sun was trying to break through, and at Monetier it was noon and all the kids were coming down from ski school so looked busy but the main chair was empty.

My friends left a message on my voice mail saying how the sun was out up top and fantastic piste conditions with the little bit of fresh, and last night they went up to Le Bez to a restaurant there and were raving about it this morning, think they're having a good time Cool

Taking them over to Montgenevre / Claviere tomorrow and will "do" old town Briancon on the way back, that should be a good end to their trip (they have to go back Friday as have tickets to Twickers).

have you skied down to briancon at all this season and how are the snow depths at the bottom down there? Looks great out there now. Not suprised your friends like it so much. Strange we are only going back this year as one of my friends wives took against serre chevalier and she isn't coming this year. Personally I think its a great resort and much better value than many in France in terms of eating out.

dan100, sent my friends over in that direction today, will hear back later - the plan was that they'd be coming back mid afternoon here to borrow our snow boarding gear but looks like they're still having fun elsewhere.

It is amusing how people react to coming to Serre - these friends are used to the better things in life, he drives an Aston and OH Range Rover, but I've known him since he was a young estate agent negotiator and they do appreciate the non bling side of things too.

They will still do their group holidays with the Golf Club etc to Verbs and Meribel lala land I'd imagine but this has been quite an eye opener for them.

And have not even taken them further afield to La Grave / Nevache / Puy / Col D'Izoard refuge Napoleon etc etc Puzzled

When they go back on Friday I'll be Billy No Mates in our building as the only apartment occupied - will be interesting to see what happens from Saturday though.

It was very bizarre in that she is very dogmatic about not going back despite not skiing much herself. I don't really understand the objection. Admittedly they didnt have a very easy time with their little one that week not taking to being left in creche (she now skis and is aged 6). We had a stunning partment in the hotel owned by l'aigle (across the piste from club med). Possibly we were slightly out on a limb at le bez and taking turns skiing with her husband was a bit of a pain. She didn't do much skiing herself that week.

Generally I'm very relaxed about where we ski. I like a reasonable amount of piste distance and a good range of skiing and after that I don't mind. The only place I always said I wouldnt rush back to was la plagne which I went back to last April and had a great time admittedly with some of the best conditions I've skied in despite not really doing much free skiing myself as I was predominatly assisting and riding my daughter in a sit ski, which I loved. Dad is getting a lot of stick from all 3 children for not taking them this year.

Warm temps of the last three / four days has seen snow consolidate by around 10cms.
