Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The standard for a single beacon search, starting from out of range, is 2 minutes (as per the exam sat by guides, instructors, mountain leaders, etc.). I really don't think GPS is going to offer any improvements on this.

Not everyone involved in avalanche searches is a guide! I would be very surprised if most normal punters could do a search in 2 minutes, especially under the stress conditions of having your pal buried and not knowing whether he is still alive or not. I certainly couldn't.

IMHO a harness for a transceiver is essential - in a large avalanche most of your outer garment swill be ripped off. In one of the last tragic incidents in the E-K one victim was found naked, the other with ski boots only. They were finding clothes in the trees for most of the summer - be warned.

If the avalanche is violent enough, or the rocks and trees you're being strained through are sharp enough to rip all your clothes off, what makes you think a harness will be sufficient to keep your transceiver attached? Or that you're going to be alive at all?
