Stella, where abouts are you in the Hautes Pyrenees? |
We live in a teeny village (68 souls ) in the Baronnies south of Lannemezan. Its about 40 mins up to La Mongie on a good day. We did spend 2 hours getting up in Feb last year and then 2 hours getting home again including chains to get down the drive!
Hoping for a good season

Peyragudes reported another 15cm overnight. They now have 145 at the top and 110 at the base.
Warmer weather due for a couple of days then possibly more snow next weekend.

Awesome couple of days during the Spanish long bank holiday weekend in Baqueira in the central Pyrenees. Both Thursday and Sunday had a ton of fresh snow and clear blue skies. (There was some pretty horrible weather in the intervening days though... we bailed out of our half-hearted trip up the road yesterday during awful visibility when we got out the car to put chains on only to be almost blown over by the wind! By contrast, our Plan B of hiking around the back valleys futher eastwards was played out in full sunshine; I'm beginning to appreciate what they say about the Val d'Aran having its own microclimate.)

The weather is unseasonably mild at the moment and looks settled for the next week with higher temperatures before getting somewhere near back to normal. Fortunately the massive early snow has been consolidated and is in very good shape. Great skiing at Superbagneres on virtually empty slopes, Peyragudes is currently closed (open weekends only) until the start of their main season on the 21st.
Superbagneres: 85/75cm
Peyragudes: 130/90cm

A tragic Christmas period in the French Pyrenees.
On Christmas Eve an 18-year-old French skier died two days after falling 12 metres from a chairlift in Gourette, whilst yesterday an experienced 26-year-old Spanish snowboarder was killed doing jumps in Barèges (Grand Tourmalet) and a 14-year-old French snowboarder was killed on impact with a tree when descending a red piste in difficult conditions in Saint Pierre dels Forcats (Espace Cambre d'Aze).
Rest in peace.
Stay safe out there, folks.

Getting really tetchy now. Off to arinsal next weekend the 13th Jan and the snow doesn't look great. Can some one offer some encouragement and tell me there is more on the way. Even if its a lie. I'm taking 3 first time skiers so want it to be good for them. Fingers and toes crossed.

Great photos! Shame I can't get back out there until the end of the month, as I broke my finger slipping on ice in the Baqueira car park before Christmas. Stupid ice.

The horror story in the French Pyrenees continues, I'm sad to report. On Saturday a 23-year-old Brazilian girl was reportedly panicked, whilst she was learning on a green piste in Ax 3 Domaines, by a more experienced skier passing too fast and close to her; she lost control and passed under a safety netting and hit a post. Although in a stable condition when taken to hospital, she died several hours later from internal injuries. Then yesterday a 17-year-old French boy was buried for two hours in an avalanche in Gourette after skiing off-piste with his dad, who raised the alarm and helped to search. The victim was located by sniffer dog but alas was buried some 4.5m deep which complicated the rescue. He was extracted alive but later died in hospital.
Meanwhile, at Panticosa in the Spanish Pyrenees, another drama unfolded yesterday. The forecast wind of 30km/h turned into 110km/h and all lifts had to be shut at mid-afternoon, leaving hundreds of beginner groups, including a great many children, stuck at the base station above the unique red piste leading back to the village. Rescue was by means of a combination of piste basher and 4x4, and the operation continued all the way through until dawn today. Happily the rescue went very smoothly.

Not a great season as far as accidents go.
While at Baqueira yesterday I saw an experienced and very competent female skier plough into a Spanish female ski instructor who was demonstrating turns, it was full on and at full speed, the sound of the impact was horrible. The ski instructor was injured (not sure about the other person). The piste was fairly empty and you can see ahead for miles so there was no excuse apart from lack of judgement/concentration or just pure stupidity.
I am always glad when the holidays are over and a sense of normality returns to the slopes.

Does anyone have an up to date condition of the snow in the Vallnord / Arinsal area of Andorra?

CraigyBoy, no first-hand update from that particular corner I'm afraid, but it's blue sky and sunshine at the moment across the Pyrenees, with some snowfall forecast for this weekend. From the webcams it seems that the pistes at Vallnord are fine.

Expecting a long slow drive up to Grand Tourmalet tomorrow morning. And for the rest of the week.
Suddenly, living down at 300m doesn't look so clever.

Very heavy snow falls at the moment (I'm having trouble keeping pace with the shovel at the front door!). Due to get even heavier tonight - full on crazy snow... Looks like 50cm village level and oodles higher up - just off out to try and ski it. deffinately a day for the woods above Bareges, it looks to be very light and fluffy stuff too.

Friends in Baqueira report it's snowing hard with another meter forecast. The cars at 1750 look as if they have about a foot on them.

Thanks Stella, it was fun! We only had a couple of hours to burn but we were in powder litterally up to your nose! - I had to ski with a hand over my face when off-piste to be able to breath! Pretty insane, I havent seen it like that for some time... And they have announced heavy snow for tonight - what have we just had!
Here's Em (mountainbug on here), in the deep stuff:

Departments 64 & 65, Pyrenees Atlantique and Hautes Pyrenees are now on an unprecedented Vigilance Rouge because of the avalanche risk. The red alert is valid until Wednesday at 16.00, with more heavy snow forecast but a freezing level rising to 1500m plus forecast high winds not helping the stability.
Grand Tourmalet was closed today (Tuesday 15th) and will remain shut tomorrow.

Luchon-Superbagneres and Peyragudes closed also. The access road to Peyragudes suffered a number of avalanches today. Sun should be out on Thursday, though with more snow tonight and even more tomorrow it may take a while for staff to clear the lifts.

Piau Engaly has reported 2 metres of snowfall in just 3 days.
Most resorts are closed today - with some areas opening up tomorrow. Freezing levels have risen and there is rain but this is going to turn back to heavy snow later in the day.
