Pedantica, I also missed this. Must have been terrible for you (not to mention him). Glad there is better news now - and hope eventually his wife relents and agrees to him skiing again - and that he does.

Pedantica, I'm really glad to hear that he is seems to have pulled through, from your earlier accounts I know it was touch and go there for a while. I hope his return to the UK goes without incident and that he eventually makes a full full recovery and gets home. Please wish him well from all of us and I hope that you and your family have an easier time ahead than you've had for the last few months.

Pedantica, really sorry to hear about your brother - it's quite horrifying what he's been through and I wish him a quick recovery and hope he's back on his feet (and skis) soon. All the best!

musher, do you mean Will? That's not his son, but a family friend. Much better, if so, though still in hospital I think.

Sounds horrific, glad he's on the mend.
Cannot believe no-one saw it, or that whoever hit him was uninjured. Absolutely shocking that it was a hit and run.

Pedantica, so pleased to hear he's on the mend - what a relief! And what a truly horrible thing to happen, just out of the blue like that. Made worse by someone not even having the common decency to stop and help

Thanks so much, everyone.
davidhammy, apparently my sister asked him if he was going to go skiing again. He said yes, she said over her corpse!
simon_bates, hmm. I shall remember that. |
had some intersting discussions with my other half on this subject. that said i'd booked the trip about 3 months after my accident (only broke a collar bone and hand), and then told her i was going. it wan't necessarily a happy day in our household
on aerious note, i hope he makes a full recovery. the injuries sound horriffic.

Yeah, I fractured a vertebra skiing last year, my girlfriend wasn't too happy when I said I was going again this year...

bobmcstuff, I once had a compressive fracture of 3 vertebrae whilst falling off a horse - I got back up on one asap. afterwards, but did take the precaution of always wearing a back protector subsequently.

Pedantica, sorry if I missed this earlier, it must have been a very worrying time for you all.
A sobering story. It's always the other idiots you have to wary of no matter how good you are. It's shocking that no one else did anything on a busy piste, I hope I would have been paying more attention. On the other hand it's good to know that the insurance and the medical services all did a good job.
Anyway, now that the worst of it's over, I'll just add my best wishes to you, your brother in law and all your family. Wishing him a swift and complete recovery.

Glad he's on the mend, and hope this progress continues. I have seen too many crashes and near crashes on Martre as you come down towards Motteret. One of the most dangerous places in the Meribel valley for that in my experience. All the best to him for the recovery. |
I just heard from one of my colleagues who attended an end of season meeting with the lift companies and town hall that this area may be getting landscaped over the summer, partly to try and reduce the number of collisions. I am speculating that this could involve putting in some kind of 'slow zone' like the 'ZEN zone' higher up. They are upgrading the Plattieres bubble this summer so possibly see the opportunity while they have equipment in the area. However this colleague doesn't know the Meribel valley perfectly and it was all spoken in French so there is a chance that she misunderstood, before hopes are raised too much.

Thanks for lots more good wishes, it's really heart-warming. Peter's doing extremely well even though St Thomas' Hospital found some hitherto undiscovered damage today - a slightly cracked vertebra. It seems to be of little significance fortunately - they're still letting him walk around and so on. He does, by the way, now remember someone skiing into him. I shudder to think what the outcome would have been had the angle of the collision been different and he'd taken the full force of the blow on his spine.
We think he'll be back home in a matter of days. Brilliant. It's quite difficult to realise how close to death he was three weeks ago.
