Getting bank funding for this type of development will be nigh on impossible. And it will therefore be difficult to find equity investors as if it needs to be funded entirely with equity the returns for investors will be poor. There are so many other investment options out there at the moment.

Sounds like it might fall through. What a shame! It's 2 and a half hours away from me, but I would have considered driving over there anyway just to have a go.

rumdiary, My understanding is that funding is not quite all there. Rumour has it that although "most" of the funding is in place, they are still a couple of 8-figure sums short.
Meanwhile the guy behind the WSM 'dome is buying the Gloucester outdoor slope: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=2061005

1969jma,
Welwyn GC Ski Centre is just up the road from Hemel Snowcentre and seems to be doing fine.
Rossendale has been reborn this last year and is not far from Manchester's Chill Factore.
Bassingbourne slope is probably the nearest to Milton Keynes Xscape, but no idea how they are doing.
Ackers in Birmingham is only 20 minutes from the Tamworth snowdome and they have more skiers this year than previously, and Stoke and Swadlincote can't be much further if not closer - Stoke has recently vastly expanded its freestyle capacity to cater for local demand.
Dunno anything about Scottish slopes: except that Edinburgh/Midlothian/Hillend are spending ~£1m on development and Snowfactor at Braehead in Glasgow isn't that far away.
IME the customer base of artificial snow is very different that the customer base of outdoor plastic. Outdoor slopes have very little operating costs compared to indoor snow and can survive on a year what artificial snow slopes would devour in a week.

Next time you are in; pop over and say hello; if it's a race day I'll probably be covering 1st aid; if not I'll probably be trying to get instructors or race gates in the right place.

scooby_simon, will do. Though I'm unlikely to be there again until next year's CN race (or whatever they decide to call them next year). I'm fairly easy to spot: I'm the one wandering up and down the slope with the video camera during the actual races.

An update.
I’d like to introduce you to My-Race, a brand new wintersports company in the UK! We are the owners of the newly revamped Gloucester dry ski slope and are also behind the planned Leisure Dome at Weston-Super-Mare, which, when opened, will be the largest indoor snowsports facility in the UK. As well as running training events and race comps at these facilities, we will have an on-site shop at the Gloucester slope, primarily specialising in alpine race equipment, clothing and accessories as well as offering ski servicing/repairs.
We will also be operating an online store, which will be carrying large amounts of clearance/previous season’s stock at amazing prices and running promotional offers for club members. Brands we are stocking will include Salomon, Atomic, Lange, Völkl and Nordica, as well as many others and we offer international shipping. Ski racing is an expensive sport, so we’re hoping we will be able to make it a bit more accessible for everyone! If you know anyone else that might be interested in what we’re doing, they can sign up to our mailing list by following the link here: www.my-race.com or ask any questions by emailing sales@my-race.com
The Gloucester ski slope will be hosting its first event on August 11th where we will be running practice and race sessions - we will also be unveiling the largest permanent airbag in Europe, so whether you’re a hardcore jibber or if you’re just feeling brave, it’s going to be the place to try your skills! There’ll also be live music and a pro BMX demo team putting on a display so it’s going to be great day!
Cheers, My-Race Sales Team.

1969jma, nice to Avon ski slope mentioned. My parents live about three miles away in Congresbury so I grew up skiing and snowboarding there and still have the scars to prove it. God knows WSM needs any investment it can get.

mightysaints, really? I live in Weston and I've not heard that. Besides, what have the council got to do with it? They approved planning permission and that was the end of their involvement.
The latest news I can find is here http://www.snowboardclub.co.uk/news-weston.html. Basically, because of the recession they can't get the capital investment in order to get the build underway.

I spoke to some of the guys involved in the Weston Snowdome a couple of weeks ago. They are now running the Gloucester Dry slope.
I understand they need an Investment of approx 50 million for it to go ahead properly.

I agree with m00958. North Somerset council gave planning permission, it is now up to the company LeisureDome to provide the funds. I understand planning approval has been given for a £50 million complex, since then LeisureDome has found it difficult in the current economic climate to find investors and retailers to occupy retail units.
I don't think it has been shelved, just on hold until the money can be found.

Ho hum! Given that the economic forecasts are predicting sluggish growth in the foreseeable future we may have to assume that funding for this will not be forthcoming for some time.
It cannot be easy trying to get a project like this off the ground at the moment.

So these guys have taken over from the original company and have no money or investors? I don't understand, how did they 'take over', and if it's that easy should we stage a s revolution and take nit over ourselves........

Who are you saying has taken over whom?
AFAIK Opaltec are the original company who want to develop Weston. Meanwhile they've bought Gloucester as they reckon they can make a better profit from that then the previous owners did (who really where in a different market segment).

I don't want to cause an unnecessary rumour, but...
I was taking to a mate about the Weston Snowdome and he said that friends of his had visited the site and had seen foundations being laid for a huge building. Whether this is for the Snowdome or not they could not confirm but considering that the only large building on the site is the ski slope it could be a possibility.
Could someone in the area confirm this?
