Although not having lived in the mountains, or skied for years I know that mountain weather changes often. Unfortunately, its hard, given the current conditions to expect a sudden change that people have been saying will be coming for the last 2 months now. Still hasnt raised its head yet - and the longer it goes on, (although not having lived in the mountains) the less chance there will be surely.

Between now and then, it could snow endlessly for 3 days, or just a dusting every other day or two. Either way, there'll be plenty of skiing come bash time.

I hope so.

What else do people do but come whinning here when they still got 3 weeks to go before they can do some sliding... |
Why is it whining? Certainly, in my case as someone on their first ski trip, its a legitimate worry considering the reports that are coming in from people. Paying over £1500 and then not having some concerns would be a little blase. On the flip side, comments like "there'll be plenty of skiing come bash time." are a lot more reassuring for those of us who havent "lived in the mountains"
Certainly it might have been better/wiser to book a trip not so late in the season to have more chance of decent snow. But one of the reasons I wanted to do the EoSB was because of the group dynamic that seems apparent.
I think its very easy to come on and shout "stop whining" when you are "in the know". |
As someone who can be considered "in the know" I guess, having done a few ski trips, you have literally nothing to worry about.
Not only are you due for beautiful sunshine conditions, where you will be able to ski in your pants (though a decent pair of trousers and a thin jacket are sensible to avoid any nasty grazes) you will also only need a couple of runs to be open to have a brilliant week of skiing on your first trip. The simple fact is that the resort, with huge amounts of snow-making facilities and high altitude, has massively more runs than that which will be open.
You have no cause for concern. Honestly. Nothing. There will be snow, and plenty of it for anything you need. There will also be beer, nice lunches on the terrace of various mountain restaurants, and no doubt some good laughs.
I am personally looking forward to a great week of skiing in a great location, because I AM THE WEATHER MONKEY, AND ALL WEATHER BOWS DOWN BEFORE ME AND DOES WHAT I TELL IT TO! Now stick with me kids, and we will have plenty enough snow. We will also have toboggans

I have never seen a toboggan run that has a massive gondola to take you to the top. Have a poke at the piste map, it's a massive great long run.
I have been the Weather Monkey for approximately 10 years now. It's an officially recognised position by the Met Office. Wherever I go, the weather of my choosing is sure to follow. Recent examples include a foot of fresh powder in Tignes in December, the first snow for weeks in Courchevel in January, flights reopening from Grenoble airport on the day I arrive, and flat calm seas whenever I get on board a boat. I am currently doing my advanced diploma in tide control, known as the King Cnut Course (or at least I think that was how they spelled it)

I think my interpretation of a "safe and controlled manner" may differ from other peoples interpretation of it unfortunately.
To tell the truth though Pam I havent really been skiing for ages. Ive had the odd week here and there throughout 20 years. Its always been more a mix of endeavour and stupidity than any sort of technique that has got me down everything from blues to blacks. Time to try and address that a bit hopefully.
In the immortal words of Woody "thats not skiing - thats, thats falling with style".
I think I'd probably be a lev 3 standard or advanced based on this

Can I put it back down now? People in the office are looking at me, and my arm hurts. The apartments are significantly nicer than my flat, partly because we don't have a swimming pool etc, so for me a week of relaxing with a few beers and a few nice lunches is worth it. If there's lots of great skiing, fine. If not, I've had a good break from being at work.
Seriously, for the price I honestly couldn't stay at home for much cheaper. And if there's snow anywhere, it's VT. Plus I am the Weather Monkey. If I pull off fresh powder, I am expecting an OBE, but the pistes will be fine. Trust me - if I can pull off Morzine in the same week last year, I can pull of VT this year.

You're obviously not a gambler. Any gambler knows the longer the "dry spell", the higher the payout!
In reality, whether it will snow the next week had no relation with whether it snowed last week (or last month, 2 months...).

Megamum, you've just put into words what my worst fears are. This being our first ski trip I've been dreading coming on site every day and reading how poor the chances of actually skiing are looking.
Although excited about the trip, to be honest there's a part of me regretting that I've booked, as without any snow its deffo not the type of holiday we would of booked. And the money could have been saved towards guaranteed skiing later on this year/next year.

I understand not everybody knows how snow pack behaves. But if you don't know, you just have to trust those who do, won't you?
Why do you think the snowheads pick to have a bash at this location this time of year?

There're other places that may even be cheaper that time of year. But do they have as much snow as VT? Year after year?
