Swiss, Lufthansa and Austrian* all all great for ski carriage (all the same company).
Air Berlin also carry skis for free on their "ski" routes during the ski season (certainly to Salzburg, possibly elsewhere too).
For ski trips I would always check these guys first, before looking at BA and low cost carriers.
[* never flown with Austrian, so I'm only going on what I've read]

I use them all the time from Holland (Free Ski Carriage) so I guess from the UK it is the same.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We've flown Swiss several times without any problems whatsoever.
From London City to Geneva and Heathrow to Geneva and returns.

Hmm, Swiss have told me that yes they'll take the skis, boots and case for free - but it must all be in my weight allowance of 20Kg :S
Examining their site seems to back that up. However, the experience above suggests the skis & boots are in addition to the 20Kg case. Have I got the wrong impression? I can just about do 20Kg for boots and case, but the skis would surely take any reasonable load over 20Kg?!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

TallTone, there is an exception quoted
"Exceptions on flights operated by SWISS
1 piece of winter sports baggage per customer can be transported free of charge. Small children under 2 years of age are excepted from this rule. "

holidayloverxx, ah, so just the boots to include in the 20Kg as usual - except I don't have to stuff them in the case. Mind you, when limiting to 20Kg, they might as well go in there
Thanks. I reckon that page could still do with a bit of a tidy up - unless the point is to create confusion and get people to pay for what they don't need!

There is always a charge for transporting sports equipment regardless of the baggage allowance on SWISS flights; the only exceptions are sports equipment in the category SMALL which, can be included in the baggage allowance.

Tariff for equipment, Golf or Ski/Snowboard, when exceeding the free baggage allowance of your checked baggage.

TallTone, I agree the site is not very helpful. i have always taken my boots in boot bag and they accept that as part of the wintersports kit
