norris, I think what i thought was training was the avalanche, and yes there was a helicopter earlier. There were large numbers of people probing and dogs etc there. It was directly under where the fast chair just starts going up over end of the blacks from the top of tete des saix. The snow had obviously slipped as there were large cracks in the snow pack and 90 degree cuts. It was very close to the red and blue pistes that go under the chair that the blacks join up to.
Hope they are ok.

norris, Here is the translation, just shows what can happen........close to pistes. Its a common short cut from the new red.

Two people were injured, one seriously after being swept away Tuesday by an avalanche on the ski resort of Samoëns (Haute-Savoie). The victims, who suffer from multitraumatismes but whose days are not in danger, were taken to Cantonal Hospital of Geneva. Surveys that mobilize thirty rescuers are underway to "raise doubts about other possible victims," according to police. "The thaw may explain natural or accidental triggering of avalanches," said PGHM while we ignore the reasons for the departure of the snow slide.

Wednesday 22nd december
Seems very warm and snow got very soft and slushy. Didn't go to flaine, just morillon and les carroz. Did not seem that busy, lots of stones and rocks at the base of morillon. Timalets down to les carroz has the odd bare patch. Need some more snow.......please!

Thursday 23rd December
Finally persauded daughter out of bed early enough to get to flaine.
Top of tete des saix was stoney as ever, blue down to vernant chair was very busy, blue down to flaine was surprisingly ok. Up on the bubbles to lovely snow. Skied the same blue/red a number of times, not too many people, nice off piste off the side.
Top of faust was excellent, bottom was not with rocks and stones. Daughter skiing noticably better the harder the run.....
On way back to carroz, the snow by about 3.00pm was very very soft on the long blue from vernant to the new molliets chair, and very soft on timalets. Snow in flaine is better. Just dodge the stones and brown bits on lower runs.

Friday 24th December
Well cham meteo was right...rained last night from about midnight, then turned to snow at about 6am
Lots of lovely powder...and did it need it!
Off piste was fantastic in morillon and les carroz, especially the trees (just ignore the odd rock sound!)
Skied form 9am until 2.45pm, (no lunch!) then sorry but the old man legs decided enough....
Still snowing now at 6.45pm
another epic day tomorrow.......
pistes will be fine next week.
Mutley you won't need your rock hoppers

Christmas day
Fanatastic...snowed most of day, visibility not much, but in trees was fine. Lovely light powder
Should have a good base for the rest of the season with this
opened combe finally. Did not really stray far from les carroz all day, not much point really.
Our last day for just under 4 weeks, so someone else will have to do this

Mutley, Hi not actually going to Flaine staying in Morillon so prob wont work out unless we venture over for a day. Were thinking of not bothering with full grand massif skipass this year as only got over twice last year and was a whiteout nightmare getting back one of those. Thanks for reply anyway.

Considering the lack of snow the conditions are very good. Staying in Flaine and went over to Samoens and Morillion this morning. Masssive queues to get back out of Samoens on the Chariande Express so used Chariande 2. Lanches chair yesterday had horrendous queue so avoided that today. Run back into Flaine (Tourmaline) is getting bare but off piste to the left is much better, at least down to the drag off to the left (Combe Vert? - closed at the moment). They closed Perce Neige (Tetes de Saix towards the botttom of the Molliets chair) by about 1pm due to lack of snow. Back into the Flaine bowl for the afternoon where conditions good. Off piste very tracked but better than the on piste due to lack off icy patches. Enormous queues to get back up Grands Vans started at about 3pm.
Snow needed - none forecast - start dancing!

Chris Mason, Thnaks for the report. Perce neige was horrid last week, especially the top of it loads of stones everywhere, plus getting of the Chariande express was er interesting...dodge the rock.
It was reasonably quiet last week...how things change.

Chris Mason, The Flaine bowl is inevitably the best area which is why I keep returning to Flaine despite being architecturaly ugly (compared to the pretty Samoens). I'll be there at haf-term next.

Snow getting very thin and stones aplenty anywhere up to grands vans altitude outside the reach of the snow cannons. Best artificial snow down into Morillon and Samoens. For natural snow the very top of Flaine is good. The snow cover is frozen fairly hard so should provide a good base when and if the next dump arrives - hopefully in time for February half-term.

So do i, we are in Morillon from the 15th of Jan.......there's lots of Atlantic precipitation forecast, it's the temp that's the issue especially over the weekend.....could well be heavy rain lower down. Fingers crossed it should get colder from Monday the 10th.....start the snow dance !!!!

First day skiing in Flaine bowl since 16th December. Had a pretty good day in the circumstances. It was cold and sunny. Plenty to ski in the bowl but lots of scratchy bits and patches of ice her and there - but, all in all, enough to keep me (and wife and 16 year old son) entertained. I have heard that the higher areas in in the rest of the Grand Massif ski extent are grassy/rocky (ie where the snow canons aren't located). Will find out tomorrow and report back. One other ting - seems busier than the same week last year - not just on the piste but in Flaine Montsoleil (where we have our apartment). If anyone has any particular questions - please fire away.

Just back from Flaine. They're pushing snow around various bits where the coverage is a bit thin. As a result some pebbles and smaller rocks can be found on some pistes. More so in the Massif region rather than Flaine itself to be fair. That said, had a great week - first time there for a family of our early intermediates including two kids aged 6 and 7. Wuold recommend to anyone with young kids

First day skiing today, and considering that we are in desperate need of a big snow dump, the pistes were in good condition. It has snowed all day today, but not enough for a massive upturn in the overall conditions. We stayed in the flaine bowl all day, the visibility was poor high up, but excellent skiing was to be found in the trees. Beware of stones and areas wearing very thin though- they have put plenty of signs up warning skiers where the areas are bad.
The tourmaline run from the top of the grand vans chair is very thin and patchy in places, will try out some the slopes in the neighbouring areas tomorrow.

gregoates, Considering Tourmaline is the only real link it's a pity it gets so worn at the top in poor conditions. It also tends to cut up badly in various places on the way down. When it's busy it can be hell. Dolomie isn't much better on the other side. Considering they're both blue they can be on the limit for early (or even later) intermediates who want to explore the Grand Massif system.

Weather has been awful- raining all day today at resort level and visibility very limited on the upper slopes. Lots of lifts closed in the flaine bowl, and links outside were shut, so skiing was a bit limited. Resort needs snow and lots of it as soon as possible.

My last day as well today- conditions were very poor. As Mark Riddick says- puddles, ice, stones and lots of bare patches! Temperature today was 9 degrees celsius, so there's no chance for the snow cannons to get going either. Only a few lifts were open which meant everyone was congested onto just a few pistes too- absolute carnage on the resort runs!

this is weird- it was snowing in Liverpool today- I'm going to Flaine tomorrow- where it has been 9C!
Well I think that the instructors will make the best of it- and the people going who I know are all really good- so we'll just have to make the best of what we get.
