hammerite, the weather in L2A is often completely different to SC, as the Col du Lauteret and Glacier de la Meije is in between the two. It can be warm on one side and cold on the other. A couple of weeks ago, it was 18C in Bourg d'Oisans, and 2C in Monetier .

true, but I'd say this is pretty much cold enough to be making snow http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Serre-Chevalier/6day/bot
I made the sweeping L2A - Serre statement as it was forecasting it to be extremely cold in L2A.

hammerite, most definitely cold enough , but I've learnt from experience not to take a forecast from one as proof that the same thing (or even similar) will happen in the other.

hammerite, they dont make snow this early as it will just melt, they normally start making snow from about the next weekend, but that does depend on temeratures.
you'll all be pleased to know no more photo's on your lift pass except seasonairs!
and you can now go from the top of the prorel to the cucamel in 2 lifts! so skiing the whole valley in a day is even more realistic.

snowangel., are they closing the Balme lift - i read it somewhere...(?) would be a pity - i liked the little off piste drops from that ridge.

|
rogg, the new lift from frejus village to cucamel is replacing la balme. it might mean a little more of a hike to get to them now.
|
|
|
|
|

rogg, They have completely taken down the Balme lift meaning you need to walk to the acess the off piste from the Balme ridge.

Mmmmm the above sounds very good news - wonder if they're after creating some sort of "Offpiste FreeRide Area" that quite a few places are setting up now.....nothing like a ten minute hike to cut the numbers down
They have not changed it on the S-C.com website yet
Just booked the season passes at 613 Euros - just as well we booked that week in Jan as I didn't realise how the French Hols were now into first / second week of March and they were asking insane money for our usual apartment for 29th Feb to 6th March - so we've dropped a week, though have made them an offer if it's still available mid Jan for that week!

Weathercam, they're very late this year, and I think for the next year or two, before dropping back to earlier dates.
Not heard any rumours about off-piste free ride, only that there is another chairlift planned (Mea) to replace the draglifts to the left of Balme (Crete, Mea etc ). Almost certainly starting by La Fermiere , they've supposedly flattened the earth already, when they were doing the new Vallons. Don't take this as gospel though, my spies may be completely wrong.

Wish they'd spend some money and replace the aravets lift with something fast and modern and easier to get in and out off.

papasmurf, the arevet has been on the list for ages but i know the people who own the bar under it which will go when the lift does and they've been given 5 years more.
Hells Bells, french school hols always frinish in the second week of march and this year we have no easter on the slopes as it falls the 24th and we close the 25th
also snow cannons have been running up the mountain since the begining of the week, should start down here after the weekend.

Just off the phone with my mate Per who lives above La Grave in a small village (1,800) - and I told him what my brother told me, that the locals* in Serre are saying it's going to be a very cold winter but little snow and Per commented that they now have snow all the way down into the village and it's looking like a great start to the season, he as a Guide expects to be working most weekends in Dec as it's looking so good.
The Tabuchet Glacier was skied yesterday and although it's been windy people have been skiing up from the Col du Lauteret.
*locals defined as my brother's ladies daughter who runs the Petit Pont in Villeneuve and was repeating what other locals had said to her, which in turn = Chinese Whispers!

Weathercam, la grave is not on our side of the lauteret, you cannot compare the snow fall there to the snowfall here.
Infact as i type (cos a friend of mine has just driven back from grenoble) they had 20cm in bourge d'ossian in 2 hours big white fluffy flakes, and these big white fluffy flakes carried on till la grave. It is snowing here but they are tiny snow flakes that aren't doing much. I sure hope that will change but we all know what the lauteret tends to do to good snowfall...........stop it just there so it never arrives here! we will see what happends over night!
as to what the locals are saying here................ not that i've seen John marc or his wife(whose name always escapes me but i believe its Vero) recently.............but i haven't heard any locals saying anything like that.
Anyway its all speculation, we'll get what we get but its not nessecarily the same as la grave
Hells Bells, Yippppeeee if it goes on that late i'll be getting more work! praise the french govournment..........wow that's a first for me this year!

snowangel., over the years going back & forth between LG & SC I do know that ..............
Like you say, way too early what will be will be - as we say when people start to get excited about a decent forecast for wind n'surf "Wait & See"
Name has escpaed me as well, though Vero rings a bell, Corine is her sister who's an ESF in PSV

well its snowed about 6 cm down here, but at embrum it snowed 20cm ike at bourge d'ossian, we are basically too high and tooo cold to get really big dump howeer i do believe its too early to have a decent snow fall and for it to stay, even with the cold temps so i'm not too woried.

mitzibit, Skied last Christmas from Boxing Day for the week and we had about 3ft of snow around our chalet at 1400m. Will be back again this New Year so hope for the same. It was a bit cold but that's to be expected so we hang out at Mojo with Tim and Mel in Villeneuve quite often when we come off the slopes or evenings. Regards

I'm looking at booking a trip to Serre Chevalier over Xmas, but I'm worried about the snow. How is the snow looking so far compared to other years? Would you consider that there'll be enough runs open come xmas to keep two intermediates happy for a week?
I appreciate that nobody can control the weather, but does anyone have any advice about what is normal for Serre Chevalier at xmas, and what this season is shaping up like so far? |
We were in the Grande Aigle last Christmas. There was plenty of snow when we arrived and a couple of good dumps overnight while we were there. The nasty green path down to the bottom was patchy to start, but the red was fine, and you ski straight back to the hotel!

And we were there in March - the 3rd week. The week before the sun had decimated the red Bez back down, and much more. It started to snow whilst on our coach trip in and then heavily for the first night - the start of an amazing week conditions-wise all over SC. Some of the best conditions I've seen there Admittedly Le Bez could get quite choppy towards the end of the day, but still quite skiable.
To answer the question, I've been to SC on 3 occasions during 1st week in Jan. One year the runs down into the villages were thin/narrow and not much fun. That said, above the mid-stations, it was fine. The other years, the conditions were good.

snow forecast predicting quite a bit of rain before it gets colder mid week, hope thats not the case!
|
|
|

jakemanc, it does seem very difficult to believe it will fall as rain and not snow as it is so so so very very cold at the moment, we're not getting above 0 during the day! However a bit of rain now wont do much harm to whats fallen and if we get a nice dump or even a little dump before saturday it will be superb conditions for opening day, however if we get no more snow it might be icy and i wont bother doing the off piste!
but the good news, right now its dumping!
