halfhand, it's only thing that works well in real cold. I wish the inside of the windows wouldn't ice up though.

halfhand, Yep - I remember going into the equivalent of Halfords in Newfoundland, Canada and asking for windscreen defrosting spray and they laughed... Aircon on stun for 5-10 minutes for the inside.

Just checked my supply, -4 from Halfords. But then I bought it as Screen Wash without giving a thought to the temperature aspect given all the global warming warnings.

Bones, the garage of our 1960's semi is too small for a modern car. Even a 1980's Astra was almost impossible to park in the garage without dislocating a shoulder getting out of the car afterwards. And I was only 8 stone in those days.

You know it makes sense.

Evaporative cooling is different to (although often associated with) windchill. And there is not much evaporation going on below freezing point.

I had always thought windchill was really the removal of heat from the body due to the moving air conducting the heat away quicker than still air, although evaporative cooling may play a part technically, practically I'm not convinced (yet) that it really does, so yes I agree.

I don't know if I need a 'fair bit', but I do get around, so I could possibly pick up from you. I'm in LA7 with easy access to the M6.
Is this the pink Sub-Zero stuff ?

There is nothing to evaporate off a planes wing in the air so it stays at ambient (about -64C at 10K metres) or just above due to air friction and solar radiation. Any moisture is blown off and evaporated at low level and warmer temps just after take off.
Windchill IS evaporative cooling due to the wind evaporatring the moisture from your clothing and body. As I said above, once the evaporative liquid is frozen or gone there is no more heat extraction due to evaporation.
So if you have a water/ethanol/glycol mix on your screen that keeps water liquid below 0C then when driving at 0C the water evaporating due to air flow WILL chill the mix below ambient and hence it can freeze when air temp is above what its rated to
The process is called latent heat of evaporation. Go look it up

madmole Granted, but the term 'windchill' normally refers to the perceived effect on humans, which is primarily conduction / convection unless of course, you are 'wet'.

Ever heard of freeze drying?
I had some -20 (when diluted 1:2) which I put in neat freeze on me last season. I've negated that problem this year by using an entire tank on the way down and neglecting to top it up since. Wonder what state the gallon or so that I left in the boot is in now.

I had the stuff out of costco mixed 1:1 and its frozen.
Just been in the BMW dealers and for £3.20/1l they have stuff that is good down to -63c neat, -23 at 1:1 and -12 at 1:2.
When (if!) mine thaws i'll siphon the costco stuff out and put the BMW stuff in.
Plus even though its BMW branded its not a bad price.

the costco stuff would probably be fine undiluted - in this sort of weather, use concentrate. and even then it's not by any means foolproof.

That bluecol stuff i said is great, put some in to my car the other day and it hasn't froze, not had any issues with it at all.
