dz4d1v, There were 3 snowHeads on the lift when it left the bottom station, and 1 (me) when it arrived at the top station. One of the fallers had a cut head and I had to scrape some scalp off my ski edge.
We had left the bottom station, don't know what happened but 2 fell off before we got the bar down, and my ski whacked one unhelmeted head. I heard a load scream and just held onto the chair vertical post for dear life. My how I laughed

Someone who is not constant abuse or just slating me |
You are being slated because it is a really stupid (and childish) thing to do, except in a genuine emergency.
THere are few places where it is safe for the jumper, and even fewer where it is both safe for the jumper AND not going to cause risky bouncing of the cable.

Why not keep skiing for skiing and jumping for skydiving and take part in two sports... Summer is for jumping and winter is for skiing:

Years ago I was made to jump off a chair lift by the lifty.
I had jumped on the chair to go down not realising that it was not allowed as in previous resorts I had been to you could go down by chair.
Chairlift stopped and lifty told me in French that I had to get off. I declined the offer as there was a twelve foot drop and attempted to negotiate a reversing of the chair. However the lifty was not for moving so I had to jump and then walk back to base. Fortunately the snow was deep.

Frosty the Snowman, is there something about snowHeads and lifts? At the 2008 EoSB there was an 'incident' (can't really remember who it involved though) trying to get on one of the Orelle chairlifts. No human damage, although someone had their ski pole shortened in the carnage
As for jumping off, no thanks. You can't always tell what's under the surface of the snow, and rocks probably don't make for a comfortable landing.

alex_heney, perhaps, but you must surely have been tempted by the sight of an untracked snow field you couldn't easily access from elsewhere, at one of those points where the lift skims the top of a ridge?

Just jump off the damn lift. If nobody did anything stupid then the world would be a very dull place and I highly doubt skiing would be anything like it is now if people never did anything daft. If you asked on other forums that have an average age of under 30 (well thats the impression i get from here) you'd probably get a very different response. People here just need to get off their high horses and realise that at some point, they've more than likely had similar irresponsible ideas. Also you need to remember that everyone is always right on the internet and therefore, advice on things like this is more or less pointless. I'm expecting to get flamed for this but I'm not really that bothered about random internet people not liking me. Snowheads is a proper weird forum, it's useful but everyone is far too eager to please everyone else, which sounds pretty cynical but it really does seem like there's a few people that really know what they're talking about and then the rest just see what they've said and jump on the big old we're all friends at snowheads bandwagon.
When the instructor jumped off the lift infront of us, the chairs did not move at all (or not any significant amount at least), nobody got thrown to their deaths and we were all very impressed. Just jump off. Ignore all these party poopers here. And don't blame me if it all goes wrong.

I want to jump to a bit that nobody has skied before.
|
If nobody has skied it before there'll be a very good reason. Have you seen those videos of guys skiing down under the Aiguille du Midi cable car? They can ski anything.
My son jumped off a chairlift once, on a school trip, because his (hired) ski dropped off and he couldn't face trying to ski down on one ski - which he could now do with consummate ease. It scared his big brother, who was sitting beside him, half to death but he recovered his ski and skied down. He did say that it wasn't far, and was on an easy bit of terrain, but I'm glad I wasn't there to see it.
He was 14 at the time. The following summer he dived into a swimming pool off a roof and broke his nose. I only discovered that several years later when an ENT surgeon shone a torch up his nose and asked him when he'd broken it.....
He doesn't do that stuff any more. He grew up.

You are sorta right. There was a similar thread over on TGR and the response was similar, in fairness they are probably mostly over 30 but a different crowd all together. It is a pretty reckless irresponsible thing to do and of course most people under 30 will think a little differently (I am quite a way from 30 yet) but without the experience of older folk giving me advice I would probably be pretty f*cked. If you just 'went for it' you could be putting yourself in to a situation you don't have the experience or skill to get out of safely.
p.s, not here to please anyone, I also couldn't care what anyone else thinks on the internet. Apart from a few people who give solid advice again and again and who I know I could go to for some great info.

Drag lifts are different. Apart from anything else, they have to be designed to cater for people falling off.
I did it accidentally, and then a couple of days later deliberately, from the same lift in the Ski Welt this year (Lift 8.
The deliberate one was because I wanted to get onto the track (80e) which crossed it, and which I had missed the entrance to on the way down.

louisrumball, Smack your legs for even suggesting such a nefarious activity.
It is to be condemend out of hand. Not only will the entire lift system in the area sink into hades, not just the one you're on, but the sky will undoutedly fall in as well.
I wouldn't recommend once, let alone several times in one day.
But if the urge is uncontrollable do a risk assessment, make sure you have company (a mix of skiers and boarders works best, but resist the temptation to swap outware) and seek out local knowledge regarding the drop site to persuade yourself that it really is an immature thing to do.
But above all else make sure there are no nazis (a rare breed, but they do occur) around because all that finger wagging, tutting and threats of dobbing are bound to spoil your concentration for the jump.
John.

As long as you wear a helmet, then you are invincible. Failure to do so will mean you die. Whether you jump off a lift or not.

Guvnor, not really an issue in this thread. Without a helmet you will already have died when the safety bar came down and hit your head - so jumping off will not be an option.

Yes, I'm thinking I should get a helmet to wear while watching some of the ski pornography on here. Might help if the sky falls in too.

Are we really to believe that a massively over-engineered lift could be derailed by a person jumping off it mid-flight?
I'm sure the designers would have thought about this
|
|
|
|
|
|
slightly off topic but equally as pleasing a topic: anyone hear on the news yesterday that home baking has been banned from school fairs in Dundee cos the council believes it's a health risk!!!
louisrumball, if you do take the plunge dude, be sure to film it - it'll rile this lot up no end (and remember what i said about yer booties)

|

xyzpaul, highly unlikely, but then again one of the lifts in Wengen was derailed last year by the wind - so I guess if you got a few freak instances together it could be a contributing factor.

what about jumping OVER a ski lift - proper hardcore (I imagine)
|
|
|

xyzpaul, well the designers didn't think hard enough to prevent this - so not causing cable oscillation seems a good idea.
