First day back at work after a fabulous week in La Rosiere. Snow conditions through the week were some of the best in years. So much so that when we went to Italy the difference in snow condtions was as chalk and cheese. The two 6 man chairlifts help the resort enormously. Most days you can have the pistes almost to yourself. Snow still very good but good weather since Tuesday has melted it off the trees in the sun etc.

Ditto ditto ditto!!!!Fabulous week, beginner kids in group skiing reds by the end. "Interesting" conditions Tuesday, somewhat off piste but on piste but hey, it was soft stuff! Even closed a couple of blues. Made it brill for the rest of it. Didn't bother with La Thuile myself, just did the Bellecombe drags for the scenery and left the town to hubby and daughter. Great meal in Le Chalet, speedy lifts and perfect last run down Saturday evening into sunset (aahhhh!)
Really have to try somwehre else next year, having only been to Ros 4 times now. Thinking of Morzine/ la prodain/Alvoriaz but could be culture shock! Off to watch video!!

helenjane, you'll be running the risk of being disappointed, after skiing just about most resorts in Europe and especially the PdS, we used to go to Chatel every year, I've come to the conclusion that La Rosiere is the best small village resort in France. Glad to hear you had a great time but you are missing out on a lot of the Espace San Bernardo if you don't go to La Thuile.

Ran out of time really, what with picking up kids etc. Off Morzine now, looking at Plagne!

What is the point of going to La Rosiere if not bothering with La Thuile? The Italian side is bigger and has features complementary to La Rosiere. The link is not difficult. Only the Bouquetin section immediately after the Col de la Traversette is red but it is short, reasonably wide and always has plenty of snow.
There is no harm in trying other big resorts but La Rosiere is special because it is back to back with La Thuile. You can get two countries skiing experience in one resort. France names the runs by names while the Italian by numbers. The signs are different. There is a big cable car in La Thuile and the 11-km San Bernado run (No. 7) is a must-do for any serious skier visiting the resort. It is marked red but the majority of it is green to blue standard requiring a bit of walking too. Travelling to Italian side doesn't require a lot of time because on coming back to the French side at Col de la Traversette it is just one blue run all the way back to La Rosiere 1850.

Strange though it may seem, had very good time doing just what I wanted thank you saikee, have done ithe Italian side before and as i remember no 7 is no more than a long road anyway. Preferred to spend time skiing with my kids than looking at italian grass.Plenty of enjoyable family skiing in Ros, each to his own etc etc.!

More arguments please as to which is better, French side or Italian Side. Also can any one describe the link poma's as I shall be taking 2 kids 9&10 who can blast down reds but get bored on drag lifts, loose concentration and fall off!

Frosty the Snowman, Ros is a nicer looking resort tends to be sunnier. not much to choose between runs although Thuile is larger. La Thuile can be windier. Virtually only snow on pistes last week as it had blown off everywhere else although pistes were fine. Link drags are long and in the middle of nowhere. only way back is down them. First one is longer than second although if you are bored after first you can come of down run 26 Liason and get the Fourclaz chair to go over. make your way over to run 6 La Nouva for a lovely tree run down to town.

Frosty the Snowman, La Thuille has some steeper runs, nos 2 and 3, that take you down to the village. The restaurants in La Thuille are in my opinion better, but most certainly better priced.

Frosty, I wouldn't say one side was better then the other, just different. Most of La Thuile's skiing is north facing whereas La Rosiere's is south and souh-west facing,, so conditions are often better in La Rosiere. Because of La Rosiere's height most of the skiing is above the tree line, there are only a few pistes through trees in La Rosiere, the black and the red down to Les Ecudets chair are both terrific runs and if you ski from the top of Le Roc Noir down to Les Ecudets you've got a 1,200m vertical descent. La Rosiere is about 400 metres higher than La Thuile so there are a lot more tree lined runs in La Thuile. Italian piste grooming is more frequent than the French, pistas 19 and 20 are fantastic for a full-on blast, usually beautifully manicured. Pista 7 is terrific if you ski it right from the top of Fourclaz all the way down to La Thuile. The Bellecote 1 and 2 drags are the liason with Italy, they are long but you can exit after Bellecote 1 and ski down to Petit San Bernard, taking Bellecote 2 takes you up to Belevedere. If your kids fall off you'll have a long wait but the scenery is marvellous, the best view you'll ever get of Mont Blanc. La Thuile is effectively 3 different skiing areas, you'll soon work out the topography.

You know it makes sense.

Frosty the Snowman, There is no better, only a choice. I led my wife and freind to La Thuille last week after dropping the kids off at ski school at 9.15. Skied over to the Belvedere chairlift, left the other two in La Thuille and then went back to get the kids. (its 30 minutes just to get back to the Fort riding two chairlifts). The runs in La Thuille were rubbish in comparison to La Rosiere and so I did not feel I was missing out.
On the other side my 7 year old was taken to La Thuille on his last day of ski school as there was only two in the class and he was chuffed to bits that he had skied in Italy.

Guessing you are on the poma ten minutes in the shade first thing in the Morning. I would take both poma's to get to the sun as quickly as possible. You definately don't want to fall off the poma.

Frosty the Snowman, I have to echo David@trax and the posts here, La Roz is a very nice and (at the moment) not too developed resort with two great restaurants ( Le Chalet and L’Ancolie [sp?] + Toni and Tatti (Le Chalet) have taken over Le Petit Relais up by the kiddy lift so that should improve the lunchtime menu. OK so it is a little limited for the gastronomes amongst us but that’s not what it’s about, La Roz is for people who just want a ‘big easy’ vacation, fun for everyone from grandkid to grandma, no stress and no forced apré.
Unfortunately the Bellcombe 1&2 drag link to Italy and the run back do have a ‘Jeckle and Hyde’ aspect. In good conditions they are an utter joy, low incline, jaw dropping vistas and a fairly unique experience.
In bad conditions they’re incredibly unpleasant and if closed down while you’re on the wrong side f’in expensive to get back. I can still remember a day when I was blown back up the pass by an ice crystal laden blast!
I’ve eaten lunch on the Italian side ½ a dozen times and there are three powerful memories, the wine is much worse, the coffee is much better, the food is in a different league to the lunch menu in France.
So if you like your lunch go to Italy. As for the skiing, well it’s Italian, wide easy graded white motorways, no drags, but when you get to the blacks it’s a different ball game – I barely made it down no2 in one piece and I passed a stranded snow bison that had broken its drive plates and its back tines on the ice

Frosty the Snowman, We found the runs in the middle of Thuile above the gondola very samey and quite flat. Better as you get nearer Thuile. A lot of our party preferred to stay in Ros. Better views.

I'd say that both resorts have their distinctive merits, most of which have been extolled above. As David mentioned, skiing from Roc Noir down to Ecudets provides some excellent varied skiing. Marmottes is one of my favourites - a long red which tends to offer varied conditions that tends to keep you on your toes!
As for La Thuile, last year on the last week of the season, I was fortunate to be taken over there by David along with a few others where we enjoyed empty pistes that were in top condition under a warm early spring sun. Rates as one of the best day's skiing I've had. There really was no-one around. Have to get round to doing that again David - we might even find La Rascard this time

It's been snowing all day again, not very pleasant, the snow has a high moisture content and it's cold and windy. Better weather from Weds on according to the Metteo.

Frosty, yes provided it gets cold, that's the forecast from Weds onwards, high risk of avalanche at the moment and it has been windy, so the link to Italy has been closed.

Tony Ellwood, According to that it's snowing right now! But the sun's been shining most of the day....
Frosty the Snowman, Same forecast for Les Arcs..
But they sometimes change it several times during the day - couple of hours ago there was no snow Saturday, and freezing point wasn't above 500m all week. Now it's going to snow on Saturday and freeze point Friday is at 1100m. If it can vary that much for the 48 hours forecast, they can't have much chance of real accuracy with the 5 day plus when it's as changeable as it is right now...

Scary, really, that they can't even get it right on the day

If they simply follow GFS (and it sometimes looks like they will), then that's not surprising as it runs every 6 hours. The French do have their own model(s) though, so I'd be surprised if they didn't have their own modification. Some set-ups are very difficult to forecast, even at veru short term.
One thing though, it's worth checking what the forecast period is - if it's for a 12hr period then they may not be referring to the whole lot as being snow. The uk.weather.com hour by hour forecast is shoing snow showers, but only a 40% chance of precip for each hour.

Just got the local meteo, more snow forecast for Sat pm and all day Sunday. Over 250 cms at the top and 160 cms at village level, all runs open, all lifts working and I've managed to skive a week's skiing next week. Yippee!

For those new to this sport, skiving is a combination of diving and skiing using a wetsuit and specialised sub-powda kit. If you see David launching himself off the side of a boat some distance from the piste, this is what he's doing.

There is another meaning David and my wife has a number of alternative suggestions as to how my time should be spent. Skiing, diving or wearing neoprene of any description do not figure at all. My excuse is that I need to take some urgent supplies to my daughter and my son. The real reason is that I want to test the skis that son and his mate have designed and manufactured, I'm also suffering from acute snow withdrawal symptons and in need of some Tartiflette.
