They are taking over the Alps as far as I can tell from the last two years. Abbramovich tried to by Coucheval 1850 but was denied. They seem to bring money, amazing one pieces and a love of booze. On the face of it, that's a perfect contribution, but it doesn't quite work for some reason. I think it's a lack of manners but I could be off the mark.
Last year in Meribel I met a Russian girl in the Rond Point. I got talking to her as she spoke excellent English, so I got asking her the same question as this post - why are you all coming over here, I thought you had enough of the white stuff in the motherland?! I sadly can't remember the answer as I was completely ruined, but I did arrange a ski with her the next day.
She brought with her her old school flat skis, and then proceded to tell me on our chair lift up the first run, she'd started skiing at the age of 4 and then went to the Florida tennis academy at the age of 7, where she regularly beat Kornikova and Davydenko. "Quite ballsy chat", I thought as we continued to ride the lift to the top, with the nerves and realisation that I needed to perform growing.
On the groomers I destroyed her, thanks to modern carving technology, but I did notice - as I flew by her at 100mph - she had good technique. We moved onto some powder, which is where I felt less like Bond and more like Jo Brand on skis as she utterly and completely destroyed me and my belief that I could takle the entire mountain in my 'go anywhere' skis.
So in summary, they're an unstoppable, growing inclusion on the european ski culture and bring with them extremely good boozing ability, killer fashion skills, loadsamoney and the opportunity to feel like Bond for a day - or Jo Brand.

Thanks, I've needed a distraction/drug to stop me thinking about my upcoming ski trip and this seems an ideal solution!

I can put up with hairy armpits & surplus nipples and would not want to insult your mother.

I read somewhere that the only consolation for us Brits with regard to the Russian invasion is that we have now lost top spot for being the most hated tourists in Europe.
I suppose it going to take some adjusting to their particular idiosyncrasies if the Russians are now skiing abroad in greater numbers. Brits were the pioneers of downhill skiing as a leisure activity, so the locals are well used to us though I expect standards of decorum have slipped since the days of messrs. Lunn et al.
There is also the backdrop of the Russia/Ukraine gas disputes that have affected most of Continental Europe in recent weeks, perhaps that accounts for the impatience/animosity on the part of the Italians that I observed. Maybe that's why the Russian's looked a bit reticent as they understood that their government was creating a lot of ill feeling.
We experienced something similar in France in March 2003, the backdrop was the spat between Bush-Blair and Chirac during the build-up to the Iraq War. British tabloids were exacerbating the situation by front pages picturing Chirac as a worm for being a Saddam apologist, which was reported widely in France. We definitely felt the brunt of the ill-feeling caused by this, not receiving the usual cordial welcome from some of the French we came across.

rayscoops, When you can't order a drink without being able to speak Russian, it'll be time to start moaning. (I encountered this in Meribel, at the very beginning of the season; daft Brit bint who couldn't understand "un café s'il vous plait".

Nice couple from Moscow at the ticket office yesterday morning. Was tempted to ask for their address, as I'd love to visit Moscow, but bottled out.
And those of you poking fun at blingy Russian ski outfits should be warned the other nationalities (or certainly the French, at any rate) are laughing at you.

Just back from Zermatt and have never met so many Russians in my life! All totally miserable and incredibly rude!!!!(I am sure there are plenty of lovely Russians out there but didn’t encounter them in Zermatt). I'm not sure if they were there to ski or just look good draped in fur, fur, fur and then more fur! A number of hoteliers and restaurant owners informed us, ‘The Young Russian Mafia’ had taken over Zermatt

Personally, I didn't encounter overt rudeness from any particular nationality. In fact, everyone seemed rather cheery - how could they not be since they were all on holiday, and skiing! I will say that the majority of the Russian men were large and looked rather imposing. But then, I suppose a lot of other nationalities have larger men than British men (sorry lads, but it's true, you are a small lot).
