Snow Reports
FAQ
Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone here done an AIARE course?
no but AIARE level 3 is quite advanced and involved.
Chamex in Chamonix were offering the AIARE courses at one time.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Taken Level 1avy class spent over 15 years doing BC and at times would rather be by myself than actually think I can rely on partners who may not be mentally/physically equipped to help in the wrong moment.
I dig pits thoughout the season on different aspects but also rely on my evals through the season, you ski regularly and PAY attention you know.
I have also hiked to the top of a mtn just to ski back down the skin track instead of skiing that slope that day.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I highly reccomend taking at least a level 1 class, level 2 is nice but more for guides and those who spend every day in the backcountry. The beauty of unbroken powder fields (at least until I hit them) and the quiet are things I love about BC.

Tignes has excellent (Free !) transceiver practice area with (good English) instruction - bottom of Le Spot or Gratalu chair - Ortovox has a number of others in Europe :

Before skiing off-piste
1/ find out how not to get into trouble
2/ find out how to limit the consequences if you do
Avalanche published by Cicerone is concise, easy to read and readily available.
And this is a very serious subject - I understand there are snowboarders currently behind bars in France for manslaughter due to an avalanche they set off.
Was this what you had in mind when hitting powder ? I don' fink so.
