Difficult to say how much snow we had in Les Arcs as the wind meant there lots of drifts and slightly thinner patches, but I'd guess 20-30cm at 1800m, slightly less than we had in Val d'Isere.

It's been snowing hard all evening, maybe another 10cm judging by the foot prints which are being covered up. Should be a good day tomorrow, especially when the wind eases in the afternoon.

At 6.30 this morning when I was struggling to put a pair of chains on (to get out of Les Arcs) I think I might have failed to reach the correct answer to that question. Only just managed to get to Val d'isere without having to put the damn things on again. Thank God for winter tyres - lots of cars sliding sideways, but I was OK.

Yes, still a bit windy, but not like this morning which was tempestuous. Not sure what the effect of this will be at altitude - I really hope all this snow we've had in the past 24 hours settles rather than getting blown away. It's a proper big dump and it would be nice to see a good base being put down for the Christmas crowds.

You're right. Looks like it has snowed all night, and still chucking it down this morning.

rob@rar, Just checking the web cams again this morning (yes, obsessing I'm afraid) looking good... for a skiing base anyway, if not ideal driving conditions!
Are you going over to 1950 for the 'official opening ' party - weekend of 15/16th Dec? looks like quite an extravaganza being planned to celebrate the finishing of the building works.

Good grief how ghastly!!!
I dont like all this talk of heavy snow in the Les Arcs regions. And poor Rob having to resort to snowchains. I do hope there isnt too much settling on my new balcony that I will need to sweep off when I get there in 2 weeks time .........yipeeeeeeeeeeeee

No, I'm back in London at the end of this week, but I will be skiing in Milton Keynes on the 15th so all is not lost! Back out to Les Arcs for Christmas/New Year.
It was tricky getting out of Les Arcs today as the road up to my place doesn't get ploughed until after I leave to head up to Val (this is because Les Arcs is not open yet, normally we get ploughed at 6am). The snow was so deep that there seemd to be a 'bow wave' coming of the front of the car. No snow expected until Friday, so next couple of days commute should be much smoother.
A lot of snow has fallen, but the high wind has not been great for conditions. A few of the slopes around val d'Isere have been scoured of snow, and others slopes are fully loaded just waiting to be triggered. One of my favourite off-piste sections in Val that I skied a few times last season (including once with Kramer) had two giant slides on it. Sobering sight. Not much skiing has been open in the last couple of days, but tomorrow should be much better. That means i can snowplough on a much wider range of terrain than today. What joy! Called in to see Skimottaret in Tignes on my way home - they had abandoned slalom for the day and were skiing waist deep powder. That man has no dedication to the cause...

Pictures look great, unfortunately it's 39 days and counting. Boris, I'm there same time - here's hoping for some fresh stuff to fall the week before. Anyone know if they're planning to open early?
