stuarth,
Agree with this. I knew a Japanese pro telemarker who could get down an entire large mogul field (a part of which was actually used in World Cup) in about 3 downhill radius turns. Absolutely amazing skier.

I've noticed that most of the guides I have skied with dislike moguls (and they include a few extreme skiers). I'm much the same, I'm afraid. I don't ski pistes much and when I come to a mogul field I normally go down the chopped-up stuff down the edge or take a steeper line to avoid them.
If you have to ski them, though, the bumps are usually much nicer than the troughs - less scraped and icy.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

More than that, the bumps are also much nicer than the smooth piste nearby, where it's icy and scraped up by 90% of the skiers who went there in order to avoid the bumps.
Although I'm not an "expert" skier, much less so on bumps. I do perfer the bump field in period of poor snow for the above reason. Or put another way, I "hate" ice even more than bumps.

abc, well, OK, yes - if that were the case. But normally the bumps are there because most people skied in that area (specifically in the troughs).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

good point stuarth. i always say that i can't ski moguls, but then i don't really call something a mogul unless it causes me to adjust my skiing style (or lack thereof...). i guess that's a self-fulfilling prophecy?

snowball, things is, when the moguls were first formed, they're not icy and not too much harder to ski than non-bump piste of similar pitch. Though I don't have a problem with good skier NOT prefering the bumps.
But by the time they got icy and scraped of all snow, the same would have been the case to the non-bumped up pisted too. So it's the choice between icy bumps vs. even MORE icy smooth piste. It's a personal preference at that point.
Frankly, when snow is poor, it's not much fun to ski at all. On piste, I'm really worried about being hit by out-of-controled skier who're over their head on the smooth piste. Less of an issue on the bump field (they do get slowed/stopped by the bumps even if they're indeed "over their head" literally). Hence my preference.
Off-piste, there're no such thing as moguls since few skiers ski the same line. So it's no surprise off-piste guides don't particularly like moguls.

Harder to ski.
But so much more rewarding.
All my best days have been on the toughest or the day after.
Hmm. Might be the year for a Whiteface gathering.

This is SO not true in trees.

Whiteface is about the only place I don't particularly mind skiing the icy steep pitch. Skiers there seem to know what the heck they're doing (at least they DID 10 years back when I last skied there). Can't say I LIKE icy steep runs though.
