Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Really nice snow today. firm with a little dusting of fresh, but in no way icy. Very Happy the weather wasn't so great though, as it was cloudy with sunny intervals and pretty windy (36kph). However, with adequate clothing and apart from the odd gust it was fine. Visibility was good, and even at 13.00 and down at the cafe it wasn't at all slushy. Winter conditions again, and set to stay cold for the next few days. Shame for Lampbus who's not skiing, but excellent for Little Tiger and all the others who are. Very Happy Very Happy

It was a lovely day today. It was very sunny all day, but not hot on the glacier so the snow stayed pretty good all day. It was quite hard first thing, but not icy. By 13.00 it was a bit slushy at the bottom of the Signal, but hadn't deteriorated much on the Puy Salie which is a fair bit higher. Very Happy Pretty much perfect really. Very Happy

On the way up I spotted this fab little rainbow with shadows in the clouds inside the rainbow. The pic hasn't come out all that well, but I hope you can get the idea.

Later on LT and I skied some nice off piste around mid-morning, so here's a pic of that too. Very Happy Very Happy

II, That's exactly it - I've never seen it before, and it was really beautiful. Pity my little camera doesn't do justice to light effects like that. I could see shadows of the Jandri Express and the pylons in the circle - amazing. Very Happy

It was quite a mild day, but with a fair bit of wind. We skied mostly on the Signal early on to stay out of it, and the snow was softening at the bottom of that run. Here's a pic looking down it. Later on we went up onto the top of the Dome run and did circuits of the Murtouse lift and the snow was just about as perfect as it gets. The sky varied from quite sunny to very threatening, but it stayed dry and on the whole it was pretty nice. The forecast is for it to snow off and on for the next few days really quite low (down to 2,400 or so on occasion, but the winds are likely to stay fairly high. It would be great to get some fresh to ski on. Off piste was a bit lumpy today as it hadn't softened up all the much. Still skiable, but not as nice as yesterday. Very Happy

It wasn't a lot of fun today. The snow was fairly heavy and the wind was very strong indeed. Eventually they closed the mountain at about 11.00 and then we had a big queue to get down as the Jandri Express could only run at about half speed. Still - it's been worse, and it certainly wasn't worth walking down as some were doing - daft - it's much too far unless there's no alternative. Anyway, we did get some skiing in early, so it was worth it, but the Signal was packed as I understand you could barely stand up at 3,400m. Shocked Just wating now for the snow that's forecast to arrive. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

BTW it's pretty warm down here. Very Happy

easiski, Greatly appreciate your bulletins. My offspring and I are coming for a week on 7th July and hoping for suntans at 1650m and powder up top.

If I see you I'll say hello - I have seen you before but at the time I was suffering badly from oxygen deprivation.

micky, I hope you'll look me up - I get very offended about snowheads who come to visit and don't say hello! Shock

I haven't been up since Monday, but the temp has dropped considerably. It was a lovely sunny day today, and warm enough in the afternoon to go out without long sleeves, but it wasn't hot. first thing this morning the temp on my balcony was only 5 deg - that's about 10 degs colder than a week ago. All good for the snow condition, but some more of the fluff stuff would also be good. Very Happy

Lovely day today. It was quite chilly first thing which is very good for the snow (getting re-freeze overnight). It's hot now, although bearable here, in Bourg d'Oisans it was really quite stifling - I don't know how Lizzard copes. Shock

Sorry I can't give you any pix, but obviously, without any work and with the new apartment to work on, I won't be going up for a looksee.

easiski, I am aware of all the leisure stuff in LDA itself and I know there is White Water Rafting in Venosc and an adventure park nearby but what else is around LDA ? Any go-karts for example ? Anything else interesting to do (as opposed to look at) within say, 30 minutes drive ? Anything in Alpes D'Huez ?

micky, L2A has these things called Deval karts. They're not powered so they freewheel down a track and use a tow to get back up. They look pretty wild.

brian, Yes, I recall seeing them last year, might give them a go this time.

I'm prompted to ask about the karts because we had a lot of fun in ice go-karts in Val D'Isere earlier this year; there was also Ice Driving in proper Audis but it costs a small fortune.

micky, quad hire in Bourg d'Oisans, donkey rides and Adventure Park at Venosc, whitewater sports at St Christophe, scarier rafting on the Romanche at La Grave, tame (but fun) canoe trip along the Rive at Bourg d'Oisans, various via ferrata (equipment hire from the climbing shop in Bourg d'Oisans), bungy jumping in 2Alpes or at La Mure, parapenting at 2Alpes, Alpe d'Huez or La Grave, mountain biking of various standards (bike hire in Bourg d'Oisans), karting at Villeneuve La Salle, climbing and walking all over the place.

Anything else?

Lizzard, can you give me some more info on the canoe trip along the river please? Is it the sort of thing we need to book for?

Mrs C and I are camping in B d'O for a couple of nights next month and would like to do some other stuff as well as having some lessons on the glacier with easiski. However anything involving white water wont be a goer for us!

Thanks

Lizzard, thanks for that, I've just realised that the campsite I've been looking at is in Freney d'O and is called Le Traversant, do you know it? I thought staying there rather than B d'O would save a few minutes (early) driving on the way to the glacier..

Roger C, I think the new owner is a Brit - not sure though. micky, There are quad bike trips in the woods. I can't begin to list all the stuff there is to do, so I think you should either look at my website or the TO one les2alpes.com to see the definitive list. War games too. Grass skiing. All sorts. I don't know when they're opening the LG rafting - that's supposed to be "sportive" and you have to be 16 to give it a go!!!

Most of the ski shops hire mountain bikes - I know you can go on a course to learn downhill mountain biking if that's your thing. Otherwise you can just pay me and I'll start up the van to give you that big V8 buzzz!!!!!!!!!!!! wink wink wink wink wink wink

Lizzard, the problem with that is that you can't get your breakfast bread until 08.00 in the morning! Also the lift doesnt start early enough to get up the mountain really early. fine if you want to go up at 09.00, but not if you want to go up at 07.30!

Mixed bag so far today. Rain last night as I was returning from Grenoble (but not heavy). Clouds on the summits today but flashes of sunshine. It's quite chilly out, so I have hopes. Very Happy

Round here in the Chartreuse lots of computer geeks and such like have bought 4x4s and quad bikes over the last couple of years (the Grenoble Tractor), fortunately the local councils have been swift to react putting bariers on most of the forest trails before they get chewed up by idiots who don't know a diff-lock from a pollack.

snowed above 2000m near me - about 5cm of fresh snow so should be good on the glacier on Friday.
