Hi folks.
Just to let you all know I have been pre-booking things in Canadian Dollars on the internet (which constitutes a direct purchase i guess?). I bought things with a variety of cards for fun:
Barlays Connect (Visa Delta) - gave a final exchange rate of 2.21.
Co-operative - 2.20.
Barclaycard - 2.22.
I think the differences may simply be due to purchases on different days.
Seems fairly good to me from all of them and i was happily surprised.
Not sure if that is different when out there actually in person, we shall see...

How does that compare with what the interbank rate was on those days? [I'd check myself but you didn't say when the transactions were made.]
You can get the historic interbank rate here: http://www.oanda.com/convert/fxhistory

RobW, looking at that its in the region of 2.26-2.28.
Example:
Transaction on 11th (Barlays Connect card) for 373.65$ came to £168.38 (this is straight out of my bank so presume includes all charges..if there were any?) = 2.219.
From the link you gave, exchange rate was 2.280.
Not too bad?

Hi, just come back from Canada and used my Bank of Scotland Visa Debit card whilst I was out there for purchases (not cash).
I got the following rates according to my bank statements + a £1.50 charge for all transactions...
9th Jan 2.222
5th Jan 2.205
3rd Jan 2.222
2nd Jan 2.234
1st Jan 2.216
30th Dec 2.216
These are the dates the bank believed I made the transactions, not the date they were debited from my account. (My statement gives me the actual date).

I got my Nationwide credit card for a trip to the USA summer 2005 on the advice of many people. Got great exchange rates on purchases. Worked for cash - almost certainly with a fee - but little used. Used it extensively on trips in Europe since -most recently in France in Dec - again purchases at around 1.487-1.49, same for cash with an additional 2% charge for cash advances. I keep it for foreign trips and so its also easier to work out what you have spent!
I now always use Marks and Spencers for foreign cash - it was mentioned above but sems to have slipped off the radar - their rates have always been at least as good as the Post Office, often much better, they are commision free and my maths when getting dollars and dollar cheques was that I couldn't get a better deal with anyone else with or without commission - even 'deals' at Thomas Cook etc didn't seem to better unless you were getting the amount of currency that I would not feel comfortable having with me/was out of my spending league! Obviously this could change but keeping an eye at what M & S are doing is worthwhile I
reckon

So using a Nationwide or Post Office card, the $373.65 would have been £163.88 - saving yourself a fiver over Barclaycard - or 3%.

In all seriousness, always use your card and never pay much attention to how much you are drawing, that way you enjoy yourself and don't realise exactly how broke you are until you get back to the UK and haven't got enough money in your account for a train ticket from Gatwick!!
