Russell, although this is not an area that I am an expert in, I do have some experience. My understanding is that braces are largely ineffective at preventing injuries, despite what the manufacturers may claim.

I think we need to remember that people have different levels of skiing & therefore different expectations of their bodies.
I have never been a kamikaze black diamond skier, & have no intention or desire to ever become one! However I love cruising blues & reds, & I love the mountains. SO I have no intention of hanging up my (hire)skis yet! I've been told that at my age (51) the results of reconstruction are less good, & that the surgeon would only want to operate if the knee proved really unstable.
So, rehab work is for me the way forward - lots of one legged squats & dips etc to build up the small muscles around the knee, as well as quads & hamstrings. & if using a brace helps provide extra confidance & stability, then great!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Kramer,
Are there published studies on use in prevention of injuries? Since I started to research braces following my surgeon's comments I've found that MX first and Skiing secondly seem to be the main sports at which they are targeted andf in MX they seem to be regarded as safety kit like a helmet or a spine protector, not foolproof but certainly buy you a chance in an accident.. CTI was apparently founded by someone who wanted to return to skiing and MX after being run down in the street.

fatbob, I'm not dead sure of the evidence on knee braces. My understanding was that there was very little to suggest their effectiveness, but like I said that was a few years ago, and I may be out of date, but saying that, knee braces haven't changed very much recently.

Russell,
I made the mistake some years ago of using a knee brace for a number of seasons. I reality it didn't make any benefit. And when I finally starting using a Physio he advised me that with my injury a knee brace was not the solution.
In short only use s knee brace on the advice of a qualified Physiotherapist..

BUMP
Well, I'm just back from 2 weeks skiing - used the knee brace every day & didnt even know I had it on - apart from the occasional fight with a table leg! Seriously, it was comfortable, needed no adjustment during the day & I would probably have been ok without it - but it was a confidence booster to me & it wasnt the knee that impeded my skiing.
