Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What base layers/recommendations for December trip?

Funnily enough, I just bought a Mons Royale base about an hour ago from SP.

I feel like base layers are one thing I have enough experience of to have a decent opinion on.

I'm sat here working in an Icebreaker 200 baselayer. I wear base layers most days from about Nov - April. I've tried almost all types and variations. HH, Icebreaker, X-Bionic, Patagonia, Isobaa, Black Diamond, Mountain Hardwear, cheapos...

In my experience, as long as they fit well they all mostly do the job. I get the itch merino thing but it's minimized in lower weight ones, especially after washing. Icebreaker do ones around 150 that are super comfy. The merino / poly blends are warmer than regular merino - I find. I have a Y-3 one that's so warm I barely wear it.

I prefer synthetic 3/4 bottom layers and long (merino) socks. The X-Bionic ones are very good.

The synthetic ones wash and dry much faster if you're away and trying to dry stuff in the hotel room, but if you're rotating 2 it's not really an issue.

The synthetic tops tend to be more shaped, especially the circular knit ones like X-Bionic, so the fit is better and there's no air moving around inside them so the heat stays in place. They also don't get out of shape like the merino ones do eventually. But yea, they smell after a day. They don't call the synthetic ones Smelly Hansen for nothing.

Id say for comfort, go merino. For performance go with some blend or synthetic. But TBH, I buy the ones I like the look of and it's usually fine.

Actually, if anyone wants an X_Bionic Energiser 4.0 like this in XL drop me a message. Turns out I'm an XXL. Unworn, in box. 40 quid if anyone wants it.

Not sure if dropping a sale offer in like Del Boy on skis is acceptable behaviour or not? Done now...

Yea, I'm still pissed they cut my X-B bottoms off me last Feb.

I'll happily swop that top for some left leg muscle mass right now, if anyone has some going.

Arcteryx Atom

We have used Atom jackets as our main mid weight insulation for many years. They're brilliant aren't they? Comfortable in a much wider range of conditions than a "normal" mid weight fleece (e.g. what used to be Patagonia R2).

@Origen, I'm sure I could probably find some merino that didn't irritate, but that would seem like an expensive pursuit. Although I do wear merino socks.

Tried on a lightweight and heavyweight atom today, think the lightweight would be all I'll ever need as I do run a bit hot. Just got to wait for the colour I want to come back into stock now Smile
