No the obouse bar closed a few years ago, it is now a Thai restaurant.
It’s not on the same building anyway. There are about 5 separate blocks in that area, all off them are no more than a 500 meter flat walk to the gondola

Do any of the Saint Gervais folk know if the Oboose bar is still open? When I was trying to work out whether our apartment was close enough to the lifts not to need a locker, I came across it on the map and see its open till 2am and the map pin looks like its in the same building, but the streetview is confusing as the apartment appears to be a new building and it's only shown on the streetview from one side completed, the other view shows it as a building site, so I can't find the bar. As I'm travelling with kids, a 2am apres bar under the apartment would definitely not be a fun holiday! |
Assume your staying at the new apartment block across the car park from the Bettex telecabine?? If so, there is now a Thai restaurant/bar on the Av. du mont d'Arbois, which I'm guessing has replaced the Oboose bar.
If this is the case you have nothing to worry about. Its more of a quiet bar, with nice tapas style thai food and good cocktails! Doesn't really have loud music and its not what I would class an "apres" bar, as I dont think they really exists in SG.

I’m staying in Jan with my brother in an Airbnb which says it’s 150m from the ski lift to Bettex. Looking on google maps Janett Glisse seems the closest rental. I see glisse mentioned in this thread, so is a good one to hire?

Is that the one in that new apartment block?
I preferred Claude Penz at the top so that you can leave your skis and boots in a locker up there.

Yep. Then do the same for the download! Save's carrying all your gear up and down the mountain. I think the lockers are like €2 per day to hire and 1 locker is big enough to fit 6 sets of skis & boots.
Also helps if you fancy some apres around Bettex (couple of bar up there), bottom of the lift (a nice bar behind that new block) or heading into town without dropping of kit.

Watch out for that one! we done it one year only to find the gondola had closed, mad dash down home (racing the light) run with kids in tow, swept up a few straggler's on way down, think I was leading a group of 15 or so by time we got to bottom.

@Jonny996, cheers - yes good point if going to LC!! What time does the gondola usually close in Jan? I did see the red "home run" so hopefully that'll be open early Jan!

Was the run even open?? Usually closed most of the time and not very nice when it is open! Or do you mean the green Chateluy or red Crete runs back to the gondola?
We would usual only have one or two up there and head down to head into town, so never pushed it that late.

My brother-in-law has used the other rental shop at Bettex, Skiloc, which also has lockers. (It also has the name Penz in the small print, it seems there was a whole clan who set up hire shops around the valley). Also OK.
The catch as @Jonny996 says is that you have to plan in advance any visit to Les Contamines, and not use the locker the previous night.

This, 100%. We've done that twice and it's really nice to go up without skis/boots/poles.

Thanks I think he’s booked with Claude Penz now. Is there any deals on lift passes at all or just buy online and pickup at the bottom of Bettex?

There is a discount if you book in advance (I think at least a week) online, 6 days for the price of 5.
