There were many far better and far cheaper food & beverage options on the 'boulevard', my go to being the Salt Beef & Cheese bagel

How it has all changed from when it was at Earls Court and Olympia in the 80s and 90s. Had some great (but hard work) times working on the Snow & Rock stands at London, Birminham, and even one at the Sheffield slope when Eddie the legend Eagle jumped over a load of busses.
Excel is a pig to get to for most which puts people off for starters. |
I think Excel is a lot better than other places to get to now that it is on the Elizabeth Line. |
Agreed
Especially for those coming from outside of London, especially the West.

Just back from the show. It’s a shadow of what is used to be in the Earlscourt heyday. I understand the show rights have been bought by another company and the hope is that the venue moves and stalls are cheaper. |
Agreed
MTN are now taking the reins and having seen a little of what they're capable of at the Listex event a couple of days prior I have optimism that there will be significant improvement

@hamilton, I found at previous shows that those from the SCGB were more interested in talked to themselves than show attendees so I didn’t even go near this year. but you sound like an honourable exception.
If I’d known about the free google cover I’d have been in like Flynn!
I have to say in general those on all the stands were much more interested in talking than in previous years. Surprisingly some times it has been like getting blood from a stone from those on stands. Some used to sit and tap on a laptop and hardly look up to see if people are wanting to talk to them, quite bizarre behaviour at a show! |
That's always baffled me
The wrong people have been sent to represent the company/resort and are just counting down the hours before they can enjoy THEIR holiday in London
Likewise stands packing up early before the show finishes for the day
You may as well burn tenners

Very interesting thread (have sent the link to the new organisers so they get some direct feedback on the show).
@LOTA and @Thomasski thanks for the kind words about the presentation. I spent a good amount of time preparing it and I'm passionate about it, so that may have helped
@ster great to meet you and @mikepow always good to catch up (and find out more about skiing in Turkey)
Who knows what will happen with the show, but my guess is that in the first year there are unlikely to be many changes.
I've requested they have a proper snow slope, but it costs money, so unless they get a big non-core sponsor, it's unlikely.
I thought the 'jib' feature looked lame, but there was a big crowd around it when it was on, so I guess there's no accounting for taste... |
Great to catch up with you too. And many thanks for giving me the opportunity to spread the word on how good snowsports in Turkey is.
The 'jib' feature was buzzing because they were letting all-comers have a go for their '15-minutes of fame'

I was there in a professional capacity on the Ski Turkish and Erciyes Ski Resort stand supporting Erdem Kurt the COO of Ski Turkish.
Ski Turkish are also the sports tourism marketing agency representing Erciyes Ski Resort in the central Anatolia region
https://www.kayserierciyes.com.tr/
Erdem was responsible for getting @wiigman and myself out to Turkey on two occasions to write about & photograph a small sample of the snow sports offerings in Turkey for Fall Line Skiing magazine
On our first visit we experienced the snowmobile accessed ski touring at Ovit Mountain and resort based skiing at Palandoken and Sarakamis
https://www.fall-line.co.uk/ski-journal-turkey/
https://www.fall-line.co.uk/the-best-value-resort-skiing-on-earth%ef%bf%bc/
On our second visit we experienced resort based skiing at Erciyes Ski Resort, including lift accessed backcountry, along with the cultural & historical offerings of the city of Kayseri and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cappadocia
https://www.fall-line.co.uk/other-worldly-scenery-and-the-best-value-adventuring-on-earth/
It was the latter that Erdem and I were primarily promoting at the show but we were attempting to create awareness for snowsports in Turkey overall.
I was also able to join Iain martin from The Ski Podcast on the main stage to talk about Turkish snow sports.
We were very happy with the footfall and the interest shown by visitors to the show and are intending to return bigger & better.
I was also there with my 'customer' hat on and overall I would have been happy to have travelled up from Wales.
The day would have cost me around £50 (bus travel, tube, food & drink, free ticket) and I had at least £50 worth of value from attending the show
First hand information from destinations I'm interested in is worth far more than that
The talks
Magazines
Hats, goggle wipes, lip balm etc etc
It's a very echoy space and hearing some of the presenters was difficult
Having things run at the same time is disappointing. I wanted to see a number of the talks but scheduling precluded it
There were very few announcements on the overall system save for 'we're open' and 'we're closed' which could have directed people to the 'events' and created more of an atmosphere

Thats certainly why Sideways_Jnr was sniffing around it on Saturday. Also looked like they were having 'Girls Only' sessions, which is fine, but I think we went passed it 3 times but there was never anybody on their entry tent to book slots or tell you about the sessions - I don't even recall seeing anything about what the overall offering was - I assume freestyle tuition or camps?

I can't see it working at Hemel, nowhere near enough room, even if they could put up a sizable marque in the car park.....well they would have no where for cars and exhibitors vehicles, plus public transport to his dome is pretty dire.

I visited the London Show, quite enjoyed aimlessly wandering around. I purchased a pair of heated gloves for £100, tried them out yesterday at Hemel, nice and toasty.

Sounds a bargain. Was that from the man in a little stall on his own? What’s the brand?

They did earlier this month
The Northern Snow Show was held at Chill Factore, Manchester on 5th & 6th October 2024
https://www.northernsnowshow.com/
It was a smaller, low-key event to test the water but it worked really well.
Stands, presentations, on-snow testing.
They've already confirmed that it will go ahead again next season 3-5 October 2025

Just listened to #224 - waiting for the fallout from the tiny SH meltdown after Ski Sunday returns on Jan 6th with a freestyle event! The technical bit from the new Carv2 was interesting too - although I did have to remind them on the stand that they still haven't produced a snowboard version... not that our people ever listen to bossy voices commenting on our steez.

Not so much Grim Ripper status but Trim Reefer?
It's not so much a slight on the entrepreneurs behind Carv but essentially the proposition behind it is "You know what would make skiing more fun - make it more like a job with constant performance appraisal"
