Dunno why people expect cost of everything to stay the same, everything else is increasing in price, in particular fuel which every part of a ski holiday is dependant on, |
“People” are typically comparing “prices” of everything to their income. So for those whose income are largely from wages, it hadn’t doubled in the last 10 years.
Those whose income are largely from investment? They considered themselves “fixed income”. So they too, whine about prices going up.
Logic has nothing to do with it. Nor does math. Economy? Forget about it!

Is it me or has the cost of organising family trip gone past expensive into ridiculous/non runner territory this season? Lessons, hire, passes, flights and transfers on top of hotel and food. |
What prices have you seen?
In which resort(s)?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It's a very specific example but flights from Manchester to Munich on same dates as last year are £80 per person more. Car hire seems the same as last year though. Win some/lose some

Agree, booked flights to Innsbruck only to find the hotel prices are extortionate in Austria in general. A weeks skiing was turning inti a 4k per week holiday. Moved the flights to Sofia and am going 5* in Bansko! Just can’t afford Northern Europe anymore.

Of course the cost has risen above general UK or continental inflation. I’ve got numbers all the way back to a school trip in 1980.
Skiing in the mid 90’s to 2010 was incredibly cheap, but being an activity, a captive audience and resorts have to make their money in 4 months, always more expensive that lying on a Med beach.
We paid so little. A standout was a £2k package for 2, 11 nights in the Chateau Lake Louise over Xmas 99 with First Choice. Ski Freshtracks, Ali Ross (Ski Solutions), ThomsonSki, Inghams …. half board packages far less than £1k per person in nice hotels in world class resorts. Lift passes £100, ski rental £50 in the mid 90’s.
No doubt the 1.45 exchange rates helped.
But definitely not complaining, because skiing/mountains is a passion. I have and will sacrifice a load of other stuff in life not to miss out.
In the last couple of years I’ve also opened up to going elsewhere from nice, trusted hotels upping prices way above inflation.

Kids ruin it for me. Used to love getting those low season last minute deals whereas now I'm slave to the school holiday price hike, that hurts a lot LOL
As the OP says, it does feel like it's getting a bit out of hand unless you're mega wages and can soak up extra £100s here and there much easier.
There are still good deals o be had but I think it's about being flexible with board options, destination and going down the DIY route. I can see why people look at ski holidays in comparison to 'sun' holidays see them as high priced... initial outlay before you've even set foot on snow seems high, despite the fact you'd probably spend the same overall if you're the type to do beach/sun trips and activities.
