It's all a bit arbitrary, isn't it? We'd be much more of an insurance risk if we weren't conscientiously taking our prescribed meds!

Thanks for all the helpful information on this thread. My wife and I are both 80 and insured through Nationwide flexplus. I don't understand why insurers seem to think I'm more of a risk because I'm taking pills to prevent illness, eg stroke. I reported my wife's recent diagnosis with a rare and incurable disease last week and, because she is not being treated with medication, the premium was not increased at all. I hope Aviva will be OK by December when we need to renew annual travel cover.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Worth bearing in mind that insurers won't cover you if you are on a waiting list for a procedure or undergoing investigations. Was just about to renew my LV insurance when I found this out

It helped that I was able to say I have no care or hospital appointments coming up. But that's largely because the Queen Alexandra cardiac department has discharged me. Not because I am cured, but because my condition is incurable. There's nothing else they can do for me, now they've prescribed expensive medication!

@Oblos, have you seen the MPI thread? Might be worth revisiting your insurance plans!

After a lot of searching we found a policy to cover my wife and me for a fortnight's trip to Japan. Those two weeks added over one thousand pounds to our annual policy for Europe. It actually worked out cheeper to cancel the Europe policy and take out an annual worldwide policy, excluding Nepal and North America. Just to note my previos heart attack added £100 to the policy, being over 70 added £500.
This BMC policy covers rockclimbing, mountaineering as well as off piste skiing.
