Snow Reports

Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I assume that doesn't mean they force you to marry their firstborn...

@Pasigal
, Not sure insurance has anything to do with it but agree with the general point. If an individual lift company wanted to do this it would be possible. However it would just cost a lot more money for more patrols, avi control, access fees etc. Currently anyone can ski off piste if they wish and in most areas there are pistes / itineraries / ski routes that are only partially prepared, if at all. What is the benefit to either the lift company or visitors, it would end up costing both more money. Smaller areas are more likely to be struggling with shorter more unreliable seasons so any perceived attraction would be more than offset by increased costs. Anyone who really wants this type of skiing can simply go to North America
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

One other thought is that a number of Euro resorts have opened limited controlled freeride zones. They've never looked significantly more or less trafficked than other equivalent "risky" areas to me, if the snow's good and it's a place popular with offpiste skiers it will get skied. Val Thorens got pretty shralped everywhere pretty rapidly on the last day of
the EOSB
despite it being an offpeak week, I assume by the combined residents of the 3V who were perhaps no longer working full bore plus day visitors who took advantage of a bluebird Friday.
I would guess the places with freeride zones haven't seen enough of an uptick in revenues associated with them to keep pushing the experiment. Good snow year they'll get the visitors anyway, sucky year no one will be interested in skiing 3 week baked hardpack offpiste.
