We will stay in Chatillon, can't ignore the prices of those apartments there! Which of above offer blues and nice reds? I'm travelling with my son and know can handle some of Cervinia's reds. By looking at the ski map La Thuile looks ok whereas Champoluc has lots of reds.

@snowyc, TBH from Chatillon to Courmayeur is mainly motorway (and NOT cheap payage!) in just about an hour. The road up to Champoluc is twisty, slow, and not so easy. Both have merits for skiing, and looking at Courmayeur https://www.snoweye.com/?resort=it_courmayeur the conditions look lovely.

@snowyc, Cervinia, Pila and up the Gondola (but not the resort runs) in La Thuile all have nice gentle pistes for beginners
See Peter Ross' recent report of bringing his 4 year old to a lot of those places (except Cervinia)

Thanks everyone, I think the plan is to go to Cervinia on Friday and we'll then decide what's next. Monday (before the return flight) we may do something closer to France or if weather is good maybe something around Chamonix.

I’ve decided to go the other way - Innsbruck flights booked, and off to Mayrhofen tomorrow morning. Looks like it will get more snow than the south side, at the risk of a claggy day on Sunday.

We had a great day in Cervinia, a bit warm but I like it here, even the reds are manageable for my son. Tomorrow the weather seems questionable, I'm thinking about going the other ways La thuile or Pila. Am I correct Pila is better for overcast and snowy day? Looks to me as more runs are around trees.

@snowyc, I TOLD you it wouldn't close due to wind
Yes Pila would be better in flat light, the blacks and red / blue from the gondola station down in La Thuile are through trees but the bulk of the skiing area is above it.

We went to Pila yesterday and I have to admit I enjoyed it. I like big resorts like Cervinia but I really liked the slopes in Pila. We also went to the ski shop next to bottom station and it was huge and didn't looke like tourist oriented. Really well equipped!
Anyway, as I posted in Cervinie thread, today was very windy. Tomorrow we are driving towards Geneva so looking for something windproof. Thinking about La thuile or Grand montets but don't know what kind of wind to expect. When I looked at cervinias weather in the morning I couldn't see any sign of 80kmh blasts.

We've arrived in Davos tonight and conditions look pretty good.
It's long been a favourite of mine for late season skiing plus a civilised atmosphere on piste and in town

Maybe check if you are buying an Aosta pass if it covers the French side, it probably doesn't (it certainly doesn't cover Zermatt for instance) but maybe a three day pass would only allow you one other Aosta valley pass anyway and you'd have to get individual day passes also. |
Why post advice when you clearly don't actually know the facts?
You can easily buy an Aosta valley pass that includes a number of days in Zermatt. https://www.skilife.ski/en/skipass/rates/international-skipass/
And yes it covers the "french" side.

Because I visited Cervinia and bought an international pass at considerable expense. They then closed the entire resort for two days and I had to drive to Pila and back each day. Whereupon I had to buy an Aosta pass on top of the International pass I had already bought and which they wouldn't refund me for. Because the International pass did not include the other Aosta resorts. So I was worried he might be caught by a similar problem. This is why I suggested he *check*. I didn't actually post any facts.
And because this forum is a place for exchanging tips and has been great use for me.
Maybe a better question might be why you would resurrect a thread from 6 months ago to attack me? The answer, it would appear, is because I posted a few tongue in cheek criticisms of the Monte Rosa resorts and you have no sense of humour. And are a lady's front bottom.
Also you might note we are talking about different things. The Aosta valley pass is different from the international pass. The key is in the link you posted above where it says "international-skipass".

@8611, Sorry. You stated clearly that it is not possible to buy an Aosta pass that would also cover days in Zermatt, and one would have to buy individual day passes. That was simply inaccurate and also unhelpful. Anyone staying in Cervinia, wanting to ski Zermatt a bit and have the option of using other Aosta resorts should consider the Aosta Valley pass, which would allow for all of that. What you suggested to check was whether La Rosiere woud be included (it is).

La Thuile good for more given it has access to La Rosiere. I am also sorry to say it is not a good "tip" if your basis is buying the wrong pass to access all Aosta resorts plus Zermatt. You clearly bought a Cervinia pass which is more limiting, not the "Aosta pass" that you refer to. The best "tip" would be to buy the Aosta Valley pass I suggested if you want to be able to access Cervinia, all the other Aosta resorts, and Zermatt.
I am also sorry that you feel attacked. I just think it best when you do not know to say nothing. Not least as a quick internet search would have given you the right information.

No I didn't. I didn't say anything of the sort. I said the Aosta pass doesn't cover Zermatt. It doesn't unless you buy a long pass - 6 days minimum. Poster was skiing for 3 days.
I said to check if the Aosta pass covered La Rosiere. An Aosta pass for a few days DOES NOT cover Zermatt. You have to buy an International pass. You'd know this if you read the links you posted.
Certainly when I was there there were two options - Aosta and International. Aosta allowed all Aosta resorts but NOT Zermatt. International allowed Zermatt and Cervinia but NOT the other Aosta resorts. For someone only skiing for 3 days and planning to move around the resorts this is obviously a very important distinction as they might get stuck like me having to buy two passes for the same day.
All I asked is that he *check* as it was not inconceivable that there was a similar situation with La Rosiere (btw, the link you posted only says you can use the lifts in Italy).

No it doesn't. An Aosta pass for a few days emphatically does not allow you to ski Zermatt. Please see the link above that you actually posted. Poster was skiing for 3 days and would want skins and a lot of enthusiasm to follow your advice. This is terrible advice and I really don't think you should post it, least not 6 months after the fact.

If it is not a good tip that's fine, its a forum. That's what a forum is far, exchange of information.

I’m looking out my window at 60-80 cm of fresh snow under a bluebird sky if that’s any help? Will probably get a crust on it by the time a flight from Europe arrives however.
