@chocksaway, yes, you're no doubt absolutely right - I was speaking from my own "off peak" ski experience in the Espace Diamant where a queue like that on 28 January would make you think the lift had broken down or been stopped because of a fall at the top! But there are lots of reports of places more crowded than before.
I don't swallow the "too many beds" argument because historically (as @johnE notes) there have always been masses of unoccupied beds in the quietest weeks in January, certainly in French resorts. Indeed, throughout the year, except for the 6 peak weeks!

The poor conditions in lower areas is a more convincing explanation. But if there are generally more people around then I guess it's good news for the resorts, and the businesses, if not for people like me who expect a chairlift to themselves!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Les Arcs is 20% up on ticket sales from last year. Which is a LOT. I've noticed it being a hell of a lot busier on Saturdays. They bus in people from Chambery/Grenoble etc I think. Plus a lift ticket on a Saturday is 39€ which is pretty good value.
Also think that we're seeing the knock on of people coming to higher resorts now for snow sure resorts.

For some time there have been some promotions for combined "public transport" and lift pass bargains. For example, some years ago you could get "free bus" from Albertville and reduced lift pass options for Areches Beaufort, a resort which has made its "green" credentials a marketing point (all their power for lifts and snow-making is hydro). Don't know whether that still happens. Les Saisies at Christmas was covered in promotions for arriving by train/bus though to my mind the financial benefit offered was meagre!
A recent poster to Snowheads spoke of the free bus from Nice to Isola 2000.
These initiatives might be contributing a little!

Did Isola a couple of weeks ago and we booked the ‘snow bus’ to resort (10 Euro) and the public bus back (2 Euro….which the bus driver waived as we didn’t have their version of an Oyster Card)
Comfortably the best value 90 min door-to-door airport to resort commute I think I’ll ever see in my skiing lifetime. Both coaches also new, spotless and about a third full!

@Origen, there were queues of up to 7 minutes for be Bisanne Chair in Les Saisies last week. Is that busier than you'd have expected?

@sugarmoma666, yes, absolutely. I wouldn't have anticipated significant queues for the Bisanne chair in mid January. Saisies tended to get busy when snow elsewhere was poor. There were sometimes a lot of coaches around, which had "bussed in" people from other resorts, though generally not at this time of year, when snow is normally pretty reliable.

@Origen, Les Saisies had something I'd never seen before, which is the queuing time for the major lifts shown in the lift status page on the app. I queued for around 5 minutes for Bisanne several times and also for other key lifts including Chard de Beurre, Grattary and Douce.

That's useful information to have, @sugarmoma666, but not good news in January!
