@Alastair Pink, even cheaper if you use trains/buses, but not ideal when you've got a load of luggage, but definitely doable.

@swskier, yes, but as you say much more convenient to have a direct transfer direct to your accommodation if you've got a large bag and skis.
Using train and bus from Munich airport I'd need to get the S bahn to the Ostbahnhof, get a train from there to Jenbach, change onto the Zillertalbahn up to Mayrhofen then finally get a bus up to Lanersbach.

I am doing a trip in January. It doesn't appear to me that the accommodation costs are any more expensive than last year.

I'm with you on this. Life is so much easier with half board(3/4 board even better). We've found the hotels we like in various resorts for quality of food and hospitality.

Not really looking into it that deeply guys... its was just a conversation starter and observing that, on my first delve into next years holiday, it took me by surprise, even early Jan.
Flights seem to be the main increase eg. The flight to calgary has gone up from £550 to £830, so with 2 kids that's a ~900 increase on last year's prices
Crystal (I don't really use TOs but just checking) cheapest £1100 and that is not somewhere I'd choose eg Mayrhofen 1100 at HT, not something I'll be doing. The first Itaian resort is £1250 and even Andorra is £1200.
I live near Manchester so driving is not even a consideration.
Note. I can only go 2nd Jan to the 7th Jan or HT

@Gaz_H, Crystal currently have a 2 for 1 lift pass offer atm - which can knock as much as €150 -€200/person off for an expensive area like E.K.

@Gaz_H, Looking at your figures for flights to Calgary then last year's £550 appears a ridiculous price. Even £830 looks very cheep when you compare it to, say, railfares around the UK.
Why are you not even considering driving because you live near Manchester?

Flights & Lift Pass mainly, but I have not looked far into a DIY trip for transfers.
EJ has gone all RyanAir by doing one way cheap & the other way triple to 4x the price. Also a reduction in the schedule, so supply & demand will be in their favour.
I was going to look for a 2nd trip mid march, but now thinking of just spending extra for the Japan trip.

what's wrong with the Hof? The skiing in the ziller valley is comparable to anywhere in Italy.
if I were in Manchester I'd drive over to Hull, Ferry from there and drive on down to the Hof

The same Hotel, flight and week in Jan with Crystal was £166 more yesterday than last year. £899 vs £733 pp. Still early, with their dynamic pricing keep looking. Good prices do appear, just not after the first snows.

Italy are Catholic like the Austrians and Germans, they'll be celebrating the same time. Infact many Germans will be travelling to Italy for that very week.
I'm shocked you've never heard of the ferry from Hull to be honest. Read and learn

Having just completed an arduous trans Europe journey by air.
The prospect of my regular North sea ferry crossing from Hull into Rotterdam (was Zeebrugge)
fills me with great joy. Kids or no kids, from north of England or Wales in my case it is the easy way to access Europe.

Oh I know about it..... so i dont need to 'learn'....just really not for me.
2.5 hour drive to Hull
Have to be there 1 hour before
13 sail
12 hour drive to Austria
So that's at least a 30 hour journey! And then return for a week's holiday.... you've got to be having a laugh!!

@Gaz_H, think of the ferry as a floating hotel, couple of drinks, good meal and a decent breakfast. Anyway if not for you no problem, it’s a great journey through Germany.

@Gaz_H, maybe look at Switzerland by flying into Basel? easyJet fly MAN -> BSL and still have cheap(ish) flights for HT. Transfer by bus/train (get supersaver ticket 60 days before).

@Gaz_H, there are dafter ideas than getting a ferry and a night sleep on the way. Someone even suggested flying from Manchester to Calgary for a weeks skiing.
I’m still not sure what the problem is in driving from Manchester to Alpes. I’ve done it a couple times on my own with one child who was capable to be woken to collect and pay toll tickets. One of my friends drives twice a year with his two young children from Grenoble to Birmingham. He does because it is cheeper and less hassle than flying. I know Manchester is a lot further than Birmingham to the channel and that the uk part of the journey is the tough part (Once in France it all gets easier) but you can always break the journey by stopping off at a hotel on the way,

Hull to Rotterdam / Newcastle to Amsterdam never worked for us. It always needed a day off to get on the ferry in the afternoon or early evening (we couldn't have a 1/2 day off) and we still needed an overnight stop in Europe. It was just too long a drive in one day.

I'd have to agree on this too. I wouldn't do it even with a gun to my head. To say a near on 30hr journey is less hassle than 1.5hr flight is nonsense. Just remember this thread when you're doing it again.

@Gainz, except it isn’t a 1:30 flight. It is:
1 hour to the airport. Plus an extra hour if there is bad traffic
2 hours checking in at airport and trying to stop children misbehaving
2 hour flight cos they are always late (if you can find a direct flight)
1 hour queuing at passport control at Geneva
1 hour sorting out hire car
2:30 driving to resort
30 minutes trying to find somewhere to park
Or 4+ hours on the train or bus to resort.
Ok I’d wouldn’t get the ferry from hull as it’s out of my way especially since Rotterdam is hardly on the way to the French alps. But Birmingham to les arcs typically takes 14 or 15 hours driving if you are lucky with the tunnel. It is also much easier than flying if you are taking children. Sorry but flying is a lot of hassle.

I guess of you're the sort of person who can sleep on a ferry it's worth a look. But if you're not, you spend quite a lot of money to end up feeling you've been up all night. But people feel very different about driving, too. I am a relaxed driver, don't get agitated if stuck in traffic, but my son (and lots of other men I think) is immediately agitating to "find a way round" or fulminating about the other idiots. I would prefer to drive hundreds of miles on my own than to fight lots of people through an airport and stand in line for two hours (as I did when I flew home from Geneva with easyJet in May - quiet time, not school hols.

Sounds much better than 15 hours of them misbehaving in the backseat.
Have never spent 2 hours checking in either.

@Gored, Airlines request that you arrive 2 hours before the flight. I lumped that in as check in time. I have queued for over 1:30 more than once for security so generally try to arrive at the airport over 2 hours before the flight. My son used to get very figity in airports and certainly could't stand still in a queue, whereas he would (and still does) sleep all the way to the Alps.
We flew back form Madrid recently and at the Luton passport control the queues were over an hour long. One of the attendants took pity on me (I have difficulty standing for long periods) and basically escort my wife and me to the front of the queue. I rather be driving or asleep in the car than face that on a regular basis.
And yes I live north of the M40

Is it my imagination or when I look at Wengen virtually nowhere now does half board? Whilst I like eating out and around - on a cold dark night, when tired after a day's skiing, I am afraid I like to wander down to the bar for a beer and stagger into the restaurant for dinner.

Plenty of hotels in Wengen offer half board e.g Bernerhof, Falken, Alpenrose to name but three, but for the last few years I've stayed at the Edelweiss where half board includes a set but very good 4 course meal (salad starter, soup, main course and dessert) that changes each day.
