Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I totally understand and appreciate the advice to get lessons, and luckily I think I just got myself a job at the local resort that has some perks including free lessons and rentals!

Respect for finding a creative solution to the problem and creating that opportunity for you both!

@keng92, I'm glad you found an innovative, practical and very satisfactory solution.

FWIW. I feel people were not intending to judge you, but help you avoid pitfalls.

@Cacciatore, Maybe the good advise on here filtered through by osmosis and actually helped with devising this cunning plan. Toofy Grin

@keng92,
One of the big arguments in favour of renting skis here in the UK is that it costs £££ each time they are carried on a plane, I am assuming this does not apply to you as you will drive to a local area and buying your own skis makes more financial sense.

Probably better to buy boots first, then you can be sure that the skis will fit the boot (unless you manage to get some decent ex hire skis with greater adjustment in the bindings)

If your relationship survives you teaching your girlfriend to ski without her getting injured or swearing at you, she's a keeper!!! (Just don't throw it away by having kids)

It works like this.

Athletic Young 'Un: "This is what I want to do. What do you think?".
Grumpy Old Git: "Don't do it, as you are wrong. It is a very bad idea. This is what you should do."
Athletic Young 'Un: "I don't think I am wrong, for these reasons."
GOG: "You are still wrong".
Athletic Young 'Un: "I don't agree".
GOG: "It doesn't matter if you disagree, because you are wrong".
Athletic Young 'Un: "I am doing what's right for me, which now just happens to coincide with what was advised".

Everybody now happy (and not wrong - which is very important).

@Old Fartbag, Spot on.

Unless, of course, it ends with:
GOG: Of course I'm not wrong, I was right all along, you're all picking on me, I'm never coming here again!

But that would never happen here on Snowheads, would it?

I think you've got your GOGs and Young 'Uns mixed up.....But that's OK, because GOGs are easily muddled. Skullie

To add my 2 cents to this, I recently learnt to ski (late 30's, quite fit and sporty). I could already snowboard very well and have cross country skied regularly for > 10 years. I hired kit and got a lesson. I did pick it up really quickly - the poor instructor was a bit confused my me I think. By the end of the 1.5 hr lesson I could parallel turn on blue runs, the instructor took me down a very short bit of a red run, and plus skating on the flat bits was dead easy for me Very Happy . Most of the transferable skill came from xc skiing but it certainly also helped that I knew how to get on and off lifts, read the fall line etc. Regarding the equipment, I'd told the shop I was a total beginner (true) but at the end of the lesson the instructor told me to go and swap the skis for ones 5 cm longer (150 -> 155) as he said I'd not improve much on short, non stiff skies.

So the point is it is really difficult to work out the best equipment for someone how might be a "false beginner". If I'd bought beginner skis, I would have out grown them pretty much instantly.

My other advice is (surprised nobody has suggested this yet!) is if you do have friends who are very good skiers, ask one of them to teach your girlfriend the basics when you are not there. Generally couples teaching each other is a disaster waiting to happen.
