Just a screenshot of the current GFS charts for Cairngorm, showing that the current cold (though fairly dry apart from hit-and-miss snow showers) setup isn't going anywhere soon!

Hmmm....Wondering whether it might be worth popping up to Cairngorm with the touring kit by the end of the week

@mountainaddict, I think you should wait and see how much falls on Wednesday night and Thursday.

Indeed. Could yet be a goer if this comes off at Cairngorm

Possibly a bit further North or East of CairnGorm itself, possibly even some lower hills to the North of the Lecht. Potential for streamers to set up off the Moray Firth, so it is wait and watch. Some forecasts have 18cm for coastal towns along the Moray Coast!
Dry in the West, but cold and Glencoe has pushed out snow on the sledging park and the beginner area might be usable in a few more days for ski school.

What happened to Glencoe's grand plan of a few years ago to use Snow Factory snow to open a loop on The Plateau from early December each year?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@mountainaddict, I guess they use it for sledging as more revenue?

Distributing snow by underground pipes didn’t turn out to be the good idea TechnoAlpin thought it was - the ability to blow the snow a distance down hill was overstated and the further the pipes went the more things when pear shaped faster.
The Glencoe unit is currently sitting on the hard standing by the door of the plateau cafe and seems to be working much more reliably with the snow being spat straight out!
It’s also become clear with use that a shorter wider area is of more benefit for ski school vs a longer narrow run, which on its own didn’t attract enough recreational skiers.
TecnoAlpin wouldn’t supply a double unit because of the wind exposure, that was overcome when HIE said they’d take all responsibility for the consequences on CairnGorm cause it was only tax payers money they’d have pissed up the wall if it toppled into the lower carpark!
The double unit makes 2.5x the snow of the single and does so more efficiently. Certainly doing what was originally envisaged would be much more achievable as witnessed by Glenshee’s success.

Also worth adding that the hill manager told me a single T40 put out as much snow in 4 hours as the snow factory did in a day! However it had emptied the wee snow making pond in that time. The hydrology is very flashy with only weak groundwater flows on Meall a’ Bhuiridh, whereas the hydrology is much more favourable on CairnGorm and all their guns can run straight from the burns in Coire Cas.
Significant man made loch would be required at Glencoe. But then there used to be a moraine dammed loch before the moraine got eroded away.

Thanks for the info. and clarification @haggishunter.
One query though - do double Snow Factory units have to be on top of each other

The set up at Glenshee seems to have worked well in the last 2 seasons. The plastic slope Poma lies in a sheltered north east facing gulley where they can also direct conventional snowmaking in favourable conditions.
Watch below as the piles of snow gradually extend down the slope before they are pushed out and pisted next week (?)

Hopefully Glenshee have resolved their red diesel issue.

I'm contemplating a weekend trip to Scotland for some touring but the snoe looks lackluster, any easily accessible (from airport) spots worth it? ........If not it's winter hiking the peak district with the dog.

There won't be enough accumulation this weekend anywhere sorry, literally up until last weekend there has been little if any. There was a smattering in the East Sat night and then this cold spell which should see some more sporadic showers but not a big drop.

It's very cold here in Carrbridge still and forecast is for a lot of prolonged showers tonight, this cold spell will let it all consolidate a bit so a good start basically. Lecht opening next weekend with beginners area and poss more, all good, keep snow dancing.

I have been out and about this morning and i would say keep the snow dance going, i suspect the Lecht will be almost complete by the end of tomorrow the way its going. Glenshee seems to be picking up a fair bit and back in Edinburgh the Pentlandia Alps got a pasting first thing. It was quite an exciting drive at 5am on the A9 but winter tyres and 4wd all good. Cold flow will keep this consolidating which is exactly what we need right now.

Skinned up Allermuir in the Pentlands this morning from Swanston. Bottom part of the hill (up to the top of the paddocks) was pretty wet snow but above that the snow was great. 2-4” low down and 4-8” higher up (up to 12” where windblown). Plenty to fill in the humps and bumps. In the lee slope on the back side of Allermuir (south side) the snow looked amazing but I didn’t have time to ski down.
I would post some pictures if I knew how!

Don't believe everything you read on Snowheads! Ski touring conditions at Cairngorm were absolutely fantastic today. Looked like enough snow for them to open top to bottom - just a shame they seemingly can't get their @r5€$ into gear...

Great pics and great conditions MA. Respect for making the effort.
Looks like Glenshee will be first off tomorrow with the plastic slope and all the artificial snow they have been making the last week. Good effort bringing their opening day forward a week. They deserve support.

Yeah to be fair there was a lot more snow landed than was forecast - it's gone from zero to hero in 4 days basically
Its quite localised in parts as well but the cairngorms have had a solid pasting, i went for a bit of a tour later on yesterday and was surprised how much has landed, it's also very VERY cold this morning, we're at -19 right now.
