It's a nice area, especially if you have a car. We usually go at Easter which has been a bit of a lottery lately, but were thinking of switching to Christmas so will watch any answers with interest.

You don't need a car, there are plenty of free busses going round the Gasteins. You just get much better access to the rest of the Amade area with a car.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@musher, good, I prefer to hop around. We'd probably just stay in the Gastein valley if we went rather than the Amade area.

Anyone with views on typically conditions in Bad Gastein over Christmas/ New Year, like is there typically enough snow to bother.
I am looking at this as being an easy destination to reach from Salzburg on the train, i.e. about 1 hour with the station right in the resort so no need for more transport.
Any other better locales for that criteria? |
Anyone then?

@turms2, @holidayloverxx, I guess there are quite a few places within direct reach by train.
I’m more concerned about the time of year and likelihood of decent snow in that general area. Whats your experience of that?

@ster, I've always had snow when I've been, there's excellent snowmaking. This past season some runs were narrower than usual and some were closed across the area. It's pot luck
There's not many places within direct reach by train. Radstadt and Altenmarkt are on the same line as schladming but you'd have to get the bus to the lifts.

I was there at Xmas just gone. I have no idea whether it was a typical Xmas or not, as I have never been before and is unlikely I will go back.
However, there was plenty of snow higher up but some of the valley runs were white stripes in brown fields. Graukogel was closed not enough snow and there was only 1 or 2 lifts running at Sport Gastein so didn't bother going.
It was very quiet Xmas day and boxing day when it snowed quite heavily. Rest of the week quite busy.
I'll try post some pics later this evening if I can remember how.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@Whitegoldsbrother, it wasn't typical, but who knows what is typical these days

@holidayloverxx, thanks, I didnt realise you could reach those by train so easily (just to get there is fine not necessarily direct to a lift). That widens the search and accomodation options (many places seem booked up already. That is if we actually get there, as I now realise our schools are doing their term breaks differently by a week over the Xmas/NY period so does't leave much time then.

@ster, check the timetables...you might have a bit of a wait for a train.

@holidayloverxx, they seem often enough in the day time (hourly or so) from Salzburg to Schladming if rometorio is to be believed? Although on a few I now notice you need to change in Bischofshofen.

I was there over New Year 2019/20 and it was great. 2' deep powder between the pistes. It's a pretty good party town for New Years, very popular with Swedes who run the bars / bands. Negatives are the disjointed nature of it, lift queus and the on-mountain food compared with the rest of Austria.
The Graukogel area looks small with only 2 lifts but is probably one of my favourite places to ski.
I don't think you'll find any more convenient by train but the other contenders for me would be Saalbach or Kitzbuhel. I'd go Saalbach, Bad Gastein, Kitz in that order.

well do be honest a little big of lotto
Usually they have decent snow at least above 1.300m.
I was there in Jan in the desaster of 2006/2007 season and we could go almost everywhere, although down to the villages are only artificial snow
I found the are relative nice and especially bad gastein with this old style big hotels.
