Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zipfits - have they gone bust?

Goodness me, there are some very scratchy people around at the moment.
My OH did a ski service course with Jon at The Piste Office a few years ago now and really enjoyed it and learnt a lot. Likewise there is always good chat to listen to at CEM’s place.

@JamesHJ, back on topic! Nice work Laughing

I am going for a fitting for Zipfits in the New Year and I am in the first category. I bought a decent pair of boots a few years ago and the liners are done for. I really like the shells and there is some life left in them so I thought that I'd see what all the fuss was about! I like the thought of skiing liners that are 'better' in some way than the factory versions.... Also, because the rest of the boot is well fitted to my feet, I'd rather not reinvent the wheel for as long as possible.

My initial thought was to replace my boots completely but it would be £275 for the liners v's ~£600 for the complete boot including fitting probably......

I'll report back!

Great! To play devils advocate, you could shop around and buy the last years model of your boots online for say €300 though? Surely they can’t change that much? Toofy Grin

@Klamm Franzer, Atomic have a new liner that can be put in older boots, might not work if you wanted to change brand of shell in future. There is a thread about it on SkiTalk, I don't know any more about it than what is written there.

Absolutely- best practice for sure. However, I certainly can't afford to pay €600 for bootfitting, nor can I afford to travel to bootfitters.

That said, I have made mistakes, and had to learn a lot. I've probably spent the above sum, but it was averaged over a longer period of time snowHead

I paid £290 for the Zipfits.

Most boots seem to be £400+ but they come with a liner; whether one gets a discount on that when chucking out the liners, I don't know (I never have).

Dont think you'll get a discount for not taking the stock liner Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

How true it is I;m not sure, but remember being told years ago, the stock liner is there because manufacturers are expected to supply something.
Good thing about Zipfits is you'll probalby be able to reuse in the next pair of boots - certainly hope so.

Really love the precise fit of mine, great investment, and next boots, I'll bin the liner immediately.

I recall one ski shop - can't remember where (may have been Zermatt) where the guy said he chucks out every stock liner without exception and fits some custom ones. Back then I didn't know anything about this, but didn't go with him because he could not do anything in less than a few days.

"My OH did a ski service course with Jon at The Piste Office a few years ago now and really enjoyed it and learnt a lot"

I don't doubt it. So why run a nasty persona on social media? It's a common issue though; I've run forums and found that a lot of business owners ran quite nasty characters on them. In one case, the guy was making an estimated €50k/year from his posts on that forum (his own admission) but just could not help being really nasty. Eventually he went over the line and got banned (it was a forum which was moderated; no personal attacks allowed) and then went absolutely wild in revenge. Forum admins are familiar with this and prefer to not have to deal with it, because the revenge stuff goes on all over the rest of the internet, goes on for years, and gets extremely personal. SH was formed by a splinter group from the SCGB forum, after all, and if SH took action to moderate the forum, they would end up with another splinter group starting up another site.

" You can't even THINK that thought. You have to go to a certain bootfitter (even if you live on the moon) or you will be stuck down. For shame"

I spoke to you on the phone once, and you were so deeply unpleasant* that I felt obliged to buy a load of stuff off you to teach you a lesson. And then call up a few more times over the years and buy more stuff, to really twist the knife. If I’d met you in person, it would clearly have been even more expensive.

@Peter Stevens has an MO of telling us that everyone in the ski industry is on a con and despite being advised zifpfits were a iabe option claimed they were the same as what he had or impossibly expensive or nonsense or somesuch. Now some years later he has been to a proper bootfitter and acquired zipfits. Along the way he also claimed SL skis were easy as he bought a pair in a length usually reserved for kids. Cos he has run a forum he also likes to opine on how this one should be run. Anything I've missed. Oh the video of him getting outraged by a totally innocent slowboarder....

Very similar to this, just made initial contact with solutions4feet for zipfits end of January but may end up with new boots. Fingers crossed it all goes to plan for a 1000 mile return journey.

This is a very weird thread. FWIW, I have met both CEM (=Solutions4Feet) and spyderjon (=The Piste Office) numerous times and have bought boots,Zipfits and skis from them. I have been more than satisfied with my purchases*. And they are both excellent people. Well, sort of... wink

*I must admit that the twin tip Scotts recommended to me by spyderjon annoy the hell out of me - particularly since I've never skied switch and don't intend to start now - because they have to go singly into gondola slots, thereby annoying lifties, especially in Italy. But I must also concede that they ski brilliantly.

@WASHOUT, I'm in the opposite category. My boots need replacing (they've now done 10 seasons of about 4 weeks per season on average, plus quite a lot of instruction days at Hemel) the Zipfits are still fine. I think it best to ensure that I'm ever actually going to ski again before I make an appointment to replace the boots, though. rolling eyes

I am amazed that between generating 33682 posts you have the tenacity and time to dig through somebody's old posts and discover that they asked a similar question TWO YEARS earlier.

Nothing odd about that. Especially as Zipfits are really hard to find. In the UK, from the south east, it was a 5hr drive, which most people obviously won't be doing. The shop I went to is doing apparently one slot per hour, only. In a resort, you aren't going to be buying anything that isn't down the street, even if you have a rental car (why waste a skiing day driving for hours). Zipfits is clearly a great product but have very few outlets.

On ski lengths, well one must remember that real men ski with 220cm skis Wink Actually loads of people ski with "shorter than standard" skis, and love them.

Why do I bother typing up a reasonable answer to somebody who clearly needs a life off-forum, and to get away from the clique/club which dominates the posts at times?

@Dave of the Marmottes,
So someone starts a thread asking for advice. He is initially wary of advice based on bad experiences in the past. He is then persuaded to take advice, is very pleased and takes time to write a long post extolling virtues of CEM and thanking posters for advice.

End of story?

Apparently not, forum regulars dig up an old thread where the OP’s previous misdemeanour is aired all over again!

Not nice!

I’ve fallen foul of the unofficial Snowheads militia a couple of times in the past where ensuing abuse was not pleasant.

We ski, or more likely not ski in difficult times. Lighten up guys and try to embrace the season of good will to all.

@On the rocks,

No militia. Sone people demonstrate themselves to be cockwombles early on and and we all know a cockwomble finds it difficult to change its stripes.

Based on my experience with Zipfits I hope the OP has finally found their boot fit solution having spent heavily on kit vs ski days. But given his attitude and acceptance of advice I doubt it will be the end of his travails.

Plus @Peter Stevens search function JONG! Took maybe 30 secs.

Colin at Solutions4Feet supplied me with ski boots and ZipFit liners a few years ago.

They were absolutely perfect and totally snug. And a couple of years ago I went to see him again and bought a new pair of boots, and he said there was no problem re-using the ZipFit liners, and so he heated them up a little bit and they naturally moulded around my feet in the new boots.

I can ski for weeks every season, and have zero foot issues; no chafing, rubbing or small sore spots anywhere. And my feet always feel totally snug and tight in the boots, and of course this leads to a much better skiing technique.

The ZipFit liners come in different thicknesses and types, and so it’s important that someone with the right knowledge selects the correct pair for you and your boots. Initially just as Colin told me, the liners were very tight for the first two or three days; and then gradually they become more perfectly fitted and snug.

Like so many others here, I cannot recommend Colin at Solutions4Feet highly enough.

But this is nothing new on social media; it goes on all over the place. Cliques develop and if uncontrolled, they take over the forum. One can spot them from miles away.
As regards the SCGB stuff, you know the answer perfectly well. It's all over SH, with much gloating and score settling. All long before my time here (or in skiing) but it's the same old social media stuff.
