Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@davidof: Great pics, thanks!

I understand, from the Calotte you can't reach the main pic, can you? Anyway, that's a great rando in and of itself.

Looking at SC for hols next year and have seen some apartments in Le Bez. Nearest lift is pontillas gondola but it doesn’t seem to link with any other lifts. Is it much of a schlep to the lift above it? Cheers

@dobby, We call the Pontillas lift "Pointless" for exactly the reason you stated!
There used to be a handy chair which went from the top of Pointless to the top of the Frejus gondola but in their wisdom, the lift company took it out when the installed the new Cote Chevalier lift.........
Way too far to walk up to the Cote Chevalier lift, so best bet is come down to Frejus/Casse du Boeuf, not much in it........

Hardly any snowfall over the past few weeks, but it's been really cold so the snow has held up really well Very Happy

After a bit of research SC looks like the favourite for next year's trip. 2 adults (1 who likes to stick to blues, and 1 who likes reds), and possibly our 18 year old daughter, probably going late Jan-early Feb 22. Chantemerle and Villeneuve look the best options, given their central location.

I have a few questions that I hope someone can answer:
1 - we are thinking of driving from the UK; is this doable/sensible? Is it easy enough to find parking? I've had a look on the SC website and it shows car parks, but I don't know whether they are free and/or available.
2 - any local tips on self-catering accommodation in Chantemerle/Villeneuve? We'd generally go for somewhere that is relatively close to a lift.
3 - good instructor for private lessons (for intermediate plodder who doesn't freeze when he sees something steep)

Cheers

Hi Dobby,
1 Drive is easy really, 9-10hrs from Calais Euro tunnel to our place in Serre Che, set cruise control to 130Kmh and have £140ish for the tolls, just ensure you have winter tyres and snowchains and practice putting them on beforehand Smile
2 Stacks of self catered accommodation about in the valley, SC tourist board is always a good option.
3 Darren Turner gets good feedback, but I had some really good coaching with ESI Generations team, have a look on website 'checkyeti' for some good deals too.

Looks like the fat lady has sung, those of us with season passes have had an email from the lift company promising automatic refunds within a month......
They did say if it's possible to open later in the season they will, guess we'll have to buy day tickets at (hopefully) discounted prices.....
Can't see me actually doing any lift-served this season as we're also moving house on 1st April!

Seems that the logistic in place is a disaster. I got (without asking for it) my full refund two weeks ago. My girl didn't get it, even though she bought the pass thought my SCV account the same day as I did. Weird...

Some tracks coming down the Casse

And if we get the snow that's forecast then we met get the inverse of that, the tracks will be orange on more normal white snow.

Fingers crossed temps seem to be dropping but different accumulations as ever depending on which forecast you want to believe etc

@Weathercam,

Always found Yr to be the most accurate for mountain weather! They will predict rain, while other places will predict 10cm of snow!

@Mr.Egg, I agree, Yr is my first go to for forecasts except their wind predictions tend to be pretty hopeless.

1) I’ve driven to Chantemerle many times over the years - always my favoured means of travel to Serre Che. Straightforward with a beautiful drive over the Col du Lauteret, before dropping into the SC valley.
2) Chalets Les Marmottes (5 mins walk to lift station) is run by Karin & Denis Lucas. She’s English, he’s French and a ski instructor (very good). There is a car park (free) adjacent to Les Marmottes. Although the main accommodation is half board (best food I’ve ever found in a chalet), beneath the residence is a semi subterranean “cave” which provides a self-catering option with private access. It’s stunning. Although only one bedroom, the large living room has scope for a sofa bed without compromising living space.
