Nth American resorts are able to dedicate staff to lift queue management funded by the expensive lift passes. I am happy to queue a bit longer on my €495 PDS season pass. Although side entrants into a busy lift queue do annoy me.

Do you think it’s a British thing to get wound up about these things as certainly the french are a touch more laissez faire? We do love a good functional queue. |
I do think it is a British thing , but then maybe it is because it is only British people I hear complaining, the others may be complaining too. On the letting the lift go, just wait to the side to get your friends in tow then que together,.

You do overhear some hilarious stuff on or in lifts though sometimes. We were in the cable car at Les Arcs one year and there was a guy who put us in mind of a young version of Sigourney Weaver's neighbour in Ghostbusters. He was with a very tall, blond and glamourous young woman, and was telling her, in a loud voice, all about how brilliant he was at skiing, and how he had basically taught evryone at Uni. The highlight was when we passed over a line of legionnaires with huge packs skinning up the side of a steep red. He started lecturing her about how they were doing it wrong. I so wanted to tell him i agreed, and the best thing to do would be to ski down and tell them.

There are places in n America where a season pass is less than Europe, and vice versa. The extra money is used for a whole host of things (controlling all in bounds terrain takes a lot of work!).
It's kind of irrelevant though, as in most cases people organise themselves in the lift line without any lift staff organising input. Of course it's helped by a good set up system including a singles line to make merging easy. Also helped by the fact that resorts are usually pretty quiet and empty meaning you often ski straight onto lifts anyway. So I would say it's more of a cultural thing - many are horrified by the European lift queues and behaviour in them.

@boarder2020, but is there somewhere in the US with a €495 season pass and a ski area with similar scope of terrain (450+km of pistes etc.) to the Portes du Soleil?

Tbf the french army are usually pretty crap. I was talking to a couple on a lift before Christmas. They came from non skiing parts of France and in true army tradition they were taken to the top of a black and commanded "allez" Their kit does seem to be a bit better recently though, at one time they skied on what looked like ancient x country skis.

Another friend here is an ex foreign legion parachutist. He didn't ski in the army but swam apparently, I think he was mostly in Africa. He's also a crap skier but incredibly fast and fearless with no style whatsoever.

Fellow chair riders making phone calls |
I don't mind someone making a phone call, 'cos when skiing it's the most sensible time to and shouldn't sound any different than speaking to the person next to you. But the Fitzwilliams (and there are more and more of them about!) who insist on doing it over loudspeaker rather than holding it their ear should burn in hell. Almost as bad are those who use headphones, but hold the phone in front of their face like the loudspeaker Fitzwilliams and shout into it.
Sadly not just restricted to chairlifts. Anyone doing this in any public place should also burn in hell. Almost as bad as those who send voice messages over Whatsapp - almost, but not quite.
Sorry, had to get that off my chest

My kids when they suddenly decide to go in the wrong direction when disembarking a chairlift. How hard can it be?! I ended up on the floor where one of them skied over the top of my skis and I obviously stopped dead. They had to shut the lift down to scoop me up.
And to the @@@@@@ who left chewing gum on the seat last year I’d like to meet you and shake you by the throat.

I don't know, it's not particularly easy to make comparisons as in Europe you are paying for km of piste and n America controlled in bound acreage. There average snowfall is also much different, among other things. Apples to oranges.
But cost is irrelevant to this conversation anyway, as like I said there are not lifties managing all the queues. Yet people are civil and polite enough to merge correctly and alternate. When somebody fails to comply with the system it's usually a European (although not Brits who appreciate the art of queuing). It seems like a cultural thing.

@boarder2020, I only asked the question because you made the cost comparison in response to a post from @Ozboy
You are right that it's like comparing apples to oranges.
On the subject of lift etiquette, worth remembering that the whole thing about queueing and sharing chairs is only really applicable to a minority of days across a minority of resorts. Most of the time, away from peak days and the busiest resorts, its relatively rare to be sharing a chair with someone else, and even rarer to queue. In these cases you can therefore do pretty much what you like (except leaving chewing gum on the chair... Yuk!).

My bugbear is the person who gets right up to the barrier, usually pushing everyone else aside to get there, and then decides not to get on the chair. There seemed to be a lot of that going on in and around Arabba last week, for some reason.

People who insist on going in to a massive snowplough the second they stand up to get off a chair. Also, people who insist on using their poles to push themselves away as they get off the chair, planting them right between my skis/the other side of my skis.

I always just tell them I'm blind on that side so can't see the child. If they plonk one down I still look out for it, but most say okay and skip me.

It is (or at least should be, I definitely cover it, along with the FIS rules), but then it's surprising how many people seem to leave their common sense behind the second they step out the door to go away on holiday...

The Arlberg. Also had it in other resorts too. Can't even blame it on one nationality either, everybody seems to do it and happens just as much when I'm boarding as when I'm skiing.

Rarely heard in the Alps.

@Sitter, @thecramps, often wouldn't have noticed people in Italy last week ever instructed in how to use chairlifts. Regular blocking of approach. Standing right by gate to chair, then looking backwards and waiting for skibuddies. One skied across me so I had a choice...wipe her out or jump 2 foot to ground when she was just clear of me. Lucky for both of us I jumped, as chair exit collisions can easily cause bad injuries.

The person in the big chairlift queue who turns round and looks at you like you have ‘just murdered their firstborn’ when the tip of your ski happens to touch the rear of their ski. + 1000 % if you accidentally trap the tail of their ski under your ski pole basket.
