Just a thought on steering clear of France during feb holidays - one option to keep the cost down and something which may work very well for some renters is to pick a place up from beginning of Jan, agree to vacate it for a week or two in feb (take a break in the south of France And let the owners use it for their peak weeks) and then go back until beginning of April..... |
That is a good strategy, it makes sense to leave only for the busiest weeks, or if you do stay just ski first lifts and be back down by 11:00 etc
And re Schengen etc as yet we still do not know 100% how it will affect the long stay in a ski resort etc, I tend to be half glass full or head in the sand over this.
However as has been mentioned, and this is our "get out of jail" if needs must, you will be retired, so a retiree visa is an option, but you will have to prove health insurance, but I'm still optimistic it will not come to this, but there again...............
There are a group of around 20-30 Geezonaires here in Serre Chevalier depending on the time of year of mixed abilities, some do not even ski, and there are early season discount passes. Loads to do when non-skiing and places to visit as well as not being a ski factory has the best weather in the Alps!
We're only 3.5hrs from the Med so some take a break from the snow, and we're only 20mins from Italy and nipping back / friends coming out etc to the UK is good with Turin only 1hr 40min.
And @Whitegold a few of us Geezonaires would happily rip your legs off if you ever skied in this part of the world

If you're looking at France and prepared to 'give up' (or 'escape from'!) the 4 weeks of French vacances but take a property for the rest of the season then you are a VERY attractive proposition for an owner and should be able to negotiate a good deal. They will get the income from the peak weeks (and you won't be paying for the worst time to ski!) and no changeovers for the rest of the season, which will suit them very well.
It's worth spending some time searching in the GM when you are over, even if you don't decide to come here for your season, as you'll find out more about the options. If you are going for the GM, we chose Les Carroz as it has more soul than Flaine, is easy to drive down to the valley for big shops, and also offers the option of driving up to Flaine to ski rather than skiing over (if links closed, snow lower down poor, or just if feeling a bit lazy).

Aosta. Huge area, great skiing at all standards, not so busy in feb, cheaper accommodation, real town, reasonable pass (1000e) with no need to buy in advance and includes insurance and nordic skiing. Best coffee.
You would need a car, no good if you need to work and not so easy to find new pals.

We did a season in Peisey Vallandry, part of Les Arcs a couple of years back. I cannot recommend Peisey enough. Great community, awesome ski area and some lovely apartments available. We paid £900 per month for a gorgeous place with log fire, underfloor heating, stunning views.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Watching this with interest, posted something similar a few months ago. We both fancy Austria especially because of the Tirol Snow Card, however the one issue we are finding is getting accommodation for the 3 months, especially in our budget which is a lot less than yours.
But some great ideas from people in your thread are giving us other options.

Likewise watching with interest, similar age to OP and planning full season for 2021 or 2022.
Thinking Zell am See/Kaprun or nearby for early/late season access and wide variety of Salzburgerland resorts on the season pass.
Accommodation will be an early part to figure out, but would also be interested in other aspects such as fitness and injury avoidance, progression of skills etc.

Wylie, the 10k is a stretch, we are after all 2 wage slave retirees with a deliciously foolhardy plan! We'd love to save a bit on that.

PS just settling in to a fabulous one bed garden mazot in le carroz- a wonderful wendy house, fire roaring, just had first cuppa. Rookie error, went to pick up skis- left without boots! Ho hum, join the Sunday queue tomorrow.
