Ten days before opening at Kronplatz and 11 at Alta Badia. If the forecast doesn't change too much then it looks like they will be able to open some runs on schedule.

Hmm, yes, the top of the Marmolada would have copped a load from the storm a couple of weeks back when Venice flooded, perhaps??

A good example of the current Snow-making operation in Selva - main Dantercepies runs look complete + the link runs through the town are showing up

Unfortunately the humid flow of air from the south is frustrating snow making at the moment. Looks like the air will be drier next week which should help.

First day of the season proper in Madonna di Campiglio. Busy at Groste, full of snowboarders as free board testing there. Very quiet in Folgarida Marilleva. Pistes decent especially high up in Groste area. Maybe 50km open between the two areas.
Off piste doesn't really look an option right now as might be too many rocks near surface except maybe if I toured higher above lifts in Groste area. Great weather, blue sky no wind.

Bit overcast this morning. Surprisingly still cool and dry enough to make snow though.
https://www.bergfex.com/alta-badia/webcams/c13383/
The Bergfex forecast looks quite good this week. The dollies look to be sheltered from most of the rain today and tomorrow. Looks to get cooler again by next week.

Are there are any Val di Fassa road experts on this thread?
I'm renting in Canazei for the season and will have a car and was wondering which roads are badly affected by winter weather?
Particularly, down the valley to Cavalese and on to Trento and the road through Carezza and on to Bolzano.
Also, how are the routes to Selva, Arabba and Malga Ciapela?

@dhorst, certainly not a "road expert" but when i have been there the roads are cleared quickly. The resort links are high (+2000m) passes with associated weather

The valley roads are ploughed and gritted when it snows.
The Carezza, Sella, Pordoi and Fedaia passes will close during and immediately after a heavy snowfall, but they do get cleared as quickly as possible, though I can't imagine anyone wanting to drive over them with all that pow to play in!!
The main roads are usually dry and clear, as it doesn't snow heavily that often in this driest part of the Alps.

Looking good. 261 out of 452 lifts open and 540 kms of runs now open out of 1,200.
Cold enough again for snowmaking and the weather looks good today.

A bit more light snow creeping over the Alpine ridge is possible the next couple of days.

^^Light dusting throughout Val G this am, looks like all will be well for a white Christmas, even if there's only a few cms between the pistes.

@Pasigal, Any more expected from the local forecast?

There's a useful 17cm for Val Gardena at altitude and 10cm in Selva village over the next 3 days on the Bergfex forecast, as well as colder air for snowmaking.
https://www.bergfex.com/groeden-wolkenstein/wetter/berg/
Not bad considering it's coming from the NW and the Dolomites are on the leeside. It should make the hillsides white ready for World Cup week & Xmas.

|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
So for the Dolomites to get a proper dump they need a system to come from the south? And meet cold air from the north?
I guess that would be a more unlikely scenario.
Hopefully they get something like that before January 6.

Seven days of cold weather from Monday will make the big difference for the lower runs.
Alta Badia has got 28% more to go to complete it’s snow making and another 43% of slopes left to groom.
By this time next week they may well be approaching 100%, as long as they have suffient water, electricity .........and money available

The meteoceil model indicates a warming up in 4 days time but it doesn't seem to be getting too warm. The model predicts a pronounced diurnal variation and low levels of precipitation which suggests stability ie. good weather for skiing.

Ronda closed due to high winds today -- suspect that is a rare occurrence ?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@albob, nope, quite common, but usually well forecast.
The SR goes over between 2 and 4 high exposed passes depending on your definition.

Yes, it does happen a fair bit, but it doesn't necessarily mean all the linking lifts and runs are closed. It may just be one or two exposed links are closed or at risk of closure if the wind is due to get stronger later in the day, so they have large red flashing dot-matrix signs warning you not to leave your home valley. It would be chaos if thousands of skiers ended up stranded in the wrong valley at the end of the day.

In Italian it's also known as the 'Giro dei 4 Passi', so yes, you traverse 4 famous Dolomite passes...Sella, Pordoi, Campolongo & Gardena.
