You can pick Guardians up for a couple of hundred bucks vs 500 plus for the likes of the Tecton.
Seasonaires here ask me about touring as they know I do a lot, but for 95% of them it's more the idea that they like.
I have some old Missions with either Dukes or Barons that I loan out and seems most people that turn up with some gear to do a small spring tour with me are on frame bindings and the vast % of the local shops rental touring gear are skis mounted with frames though they also have light weight tech gear.
I just think the cost of these new bindings for the shops to gear up with for rental will be too prohibitive and they will stock frames and the high tec.
And @spyderjon, just checked my boots and not too bad (toes are more worn), especially so when you consider how many days I've done in them must be upwards of 70 and a fair number with the Tecton already!

@Weathercam, those heels look in great shape. I've seen really beaten up heels on that boot when used in Kingpins with a lot less usage than yours.

@spyderjon, interesting and good as I can't justify more than one pair. How do you see the toe stud working with the inserts?

The toe stud has a through hole containing a regular csk flat binding screw so a QK csk flat head simply replaces the factory screw, just like stud on a Sallie Z/Atomic FFG/Scott S series.
It's the other four toe fixings that give the strength to the mount, the stud fixing only supports the walk/ski lever etc - just like the centre screw on a Tour/Kingpin or the front toe bracket on Beast 16.

Ok - that makes perfect sense. Now all I need is for the hole pattern not to clash with anything on my current set up and we're golden. Sad but I am genuinely excited by this one.

Maybe it's the rollers on the Kingpin which chew heels? Tecton looks more like a trad alpine heel......

OH just had a press release in, the bindings will be at the SIGB Test 5-9 March 2018, Galtür, Austria, and according to the Press Release will be very popular to test so sign up now etc etc
We're passing (again) on going especially as it always seems to coincide with a planned trip.
Last couple of times we've been I witnessed people testing touring kit and they never bothered climbing and / or just skied on the piste so they could put their tick in the box as I'm sure @clarky999, would confirm.
That said obviously there are a few serious testers but few and far between was my impression.

@Oceanic, nah, I'm skint as a result of booking more ski trips than I can afford I suspect that a fairly large percentage of sales will be to those that like a gadget though.

Any ideas on the mounting pattern? I’m consider some new Volkl 90eight skis and wondering about putting Salomon Wardens on them for now and then maybe remounting with the Shifts when they come out.

Is there anyone in the UK who can put reliable toe tech inserts into Alpine boots, to be used for assent only, with the Shift binding . I only know off Sole in Chamonix but there stopping as they aren't getting on with CASE.

@kedsky, looks to me like the Synchro has an ISO 9523 standard sole. So, assuming that's the case, it will work with the Shift. I would email la Sportiva and check.

Yes. The Shift is an MNC spec binding (Multi Norm Compliant) and as such works with any boot sole, ie alpine, WTR, GripWalk and full AT.

I assume there's no special technique to extracting the factory screw? It looks like I just need to lightly clamp the toe stud in some vice grips and unscrew the screw?
I can get csk flat head s/s screws from a bolt specialist near home (in Australia). What length screws would I need for QK's please?

I have two pairs of Guardians / Trackers on my old off piste skis, but try as I might, after many years I can't break them. once one bites the dust I will definitely buy a pair of the new Shifts, but untill then they will just keep getting me fit on the uphill

Yep, they're available in both 100mm and 120mm and I'll be getting both widths. They're due to me w/c 5th Nov although I won't have that many left after all the pre-orders have been allocated so you'd best get in quick.

My order confirmation says 6.11.18 - although my Shifts are supposed to arrive this week and after chasing Salomon today I'm had a new confirmation saying either the 8th or 20th of Nov depending upon the brake width.

Received from Salomon this morning:
"There are major delays on supply of Shift for all customers which has surfaced over the past few weeks , this has been compounded by a problem in the supply plan computer system making it difficult to predict when stock will be allocated.
Really sorry about the delays but you will receive the stock sadly much later than originally suggested."
My Shift deliveries are now due on the 20th Nov & 3rd Dec depending upon the brake width and the crampons are due on the 4th Dec.

"Tech Toe Fittings Required For Use In Uphill (Touring) Mode"
so, what does this mean with respect to traditional alpine boots? Can a tech toe fitting be added to most or all alpine boots so that, if you buy these bindings, and modify the existing boots, you can do uphill touring? Or, for all practical purposes, do you need the new bindings AND new boots (if you don't currently have touring boots)?
Looking at Salomon's current lineup, is it possible to do uphill touring, perhaps with a fitting added, on the X Pro 130 and the S Lab Shift bindings, or do you need the S Lab Shift bindings and one of the Salomon touring boots? https://www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/men/alpine-equipment/boots/shopby/touring__.html

@mr. mike, you can ski downhill in the Shift with any boot sole type/profile. However you need a boot with tech inserts in the toe to enable skinning uphill.
The only company that retro fit toe tech inserts is CAST in the US. They add tech inserts to non tech boots but AFAIK they will only undertake the work if you're purchasing their own quick release Freetour binding plate/tech toe system (https://casttouring.com/collections/freetour-bindings). And not all boots can be retro fitted with inserts as often the lugs are hollow. SOLE in Chamonix used to do this conversion but no longer offer it.
So basically if you want to skin with Shifts you'll need new boots.

thanks, that's not the answer i was hoping for, but that's the info I needed. I've had my current Salomon alpines since 2013, so I'm not far short of 100 days in them, and they frankly have never been super comfortable, so this may be the year to replace both boots and bindings...
